Synergistic bioactivity and application of polysaccharide-based prebiotics and probiotics on animal feed, foods and medicines: a review.

Probiotics are microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host, and a growing body of research has verified that the comprehensive development and application of probiotic resources will have a significant positive impact on humanity. As an important and typical type of prebiotic, polysaccharides are high-molecular-weight biopolymers connected via glycosidic linkages, possessing excellent physicochemical properties and bioactivities. However, the synergistic bioactivity and application of polysaccharide-based prebiotics and probiotics have not yet received sufficient attention. Therefor

Emergence of multidrug-resistant Bacillus spp. derived from animal feed, food and human diarrhea in South-Eastern Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance poses a huge risk to human health worldwide, while Bangladesh is confronting the most severe challenge between the food supply and the huge consumption of antibiotics annually. More importantly, probiotics containing Bacillus spp. are claimed to be an alternative to antimicrobial stewardship programs. However, their antibiotic resistance remains elusive. Thus, we employed the antimicrobial susceptibility test and PCR to assess the prevalence of resistance, including multidrug resistance (MDR) and resito-genotyping of isolated Bacillus spp. RESULTS: The phe

Contamination of Animal Feed with Undeclared Tetracyclines-Confirmatory Analysis by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry after Microbiological Plate Test.

The presence of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics was determined in animal feed that had been previously screened with a microbiological plate test. Feed samples were screened by a microbiological plate test on a pH 6.0 culture medium seeded with Bacillus cereus ATCC 11778 able to pre-reveal the presence of tetracyclines. Subsequently, confirmation and quantification were performed using a validated HPLC method with mass spectrometric detection. In 2013-2018, 353 feed samples were analysed to detect antibacterial substances, of which 186 (52.7%) were suspected to contain tetracyclines. Forty-two o

Stability of classical swine fever virus and pseudorabies virus in animal feed ingredients exposed to transpacific shipping conditions.

Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) and pseudorabies virus (PRV) are two of the most significant trade-limiting pathogens affecting swine worldwide. Both viruses are endemic to China where millions of kilograms of feed ingredients are manufactured and subsequently imported into the United States. Although stability and oral transmission of both viruses through contaminated pork products has been demonstrated as a risk factor for transboundary spread, stability in animal feed ingredients had yet to be investigated. The objective of this study was to determine the survival of CSFV and variant PRV

Safety and efficacy of zinc chelates of lysine and glutamic acid as feed additive for all animal species.

Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of zinc chelates of lysine and glutamic acid (Zinc-LG) as a nutritional feed additive for all animal species. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) Panel concludes that, owing to safety considerations, the simultaneous use of both feed and water supplemented with Zinc-LG should be avoided. Zinc-LG is safe for chickens for fattening; this conclusion can be extrapolated to all animal species/categories provided that the maximum

Feed intake, ruminal fermentation, and animal behavior of beef heifers fed forage free diets containing nonforage fiber sources.

Eight Simmental heifers (initial BW 313.4 ± 13.2 kg) were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 experimental treatments in a 4 × 4 double Latin square design. The experiment was performed in four 28-d periods. Treatments tested were a control diet in which barley straw (BS) was used as a fiber source and 3 diets where the main difference was the nonforage fiber source used: soybean hulls (SH), beet pulp (BP) in pellets, and whole cottonseed (WCS). All ingredients, except the fiber sources, were ground through a 3-mm screen. Fiber ingredients were incorporated at 10, 17, 17, and 16% (on DM basis) in BS,

Effect of animal feed enriched with Se and clays on Hg bioaccumulation in chickens: in vivo experimental study.

An in vivo experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of sodium selenite, sepiolite, and bentonite on inorganic mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) bioaccumulation. For this purpose 160 chickens were fed under different controlled conditions. Chickens were exposed to Hg(II) and MeHg added to feed with or without selenium or clays supplementation. No significant differences were observed in the voluntary intake and feed/gain conversion rates. The target organs of Hg(II) and MeHg in chickens were the liver and kidney, respectively, but the greatest body store was the muscle in both cases

[Animal-derived feeds as possible vectors for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Germany. 1. Comparative risk assessment for a single animal food of animal origin].

The occurrence of BSE cases in Germany after the ban of meat and bone meal for ruminant feed in 1994 requires a detailed investigation of animal derived feedstuffs regarding their specific risks as vectors for the disease. Accepting the theory that BSE is a prion transmitted disease, the theoretical infectious potential was calculated for animal derived feedstuffs. This calculation was based on the assumption, that risk material (brain, spinal cord) of one clinically diseased cattle was rendered in the process as established in Germany (133 degrees C, 3 bar, 20 min) or, alternatively, that one

Recent Developments in the Quantification and Regulation of Air Emissions from Animal Feeding Operations.

Animal feeding operations (AFOs) emit various air pollutants, including ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, methane, and nitrous oxide. Several of these pollutants are regulated under federal clean air statutes, yet AFOs have largely escaped regulation under these laws because of challenges in accurately estimating the rate and quantity of emissions from various types of livestock operations. Recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) efforts to collect emissions data, develop an emissions model capable of estimating emissions at AFOs nationwide, and es

Epidemiology of Trichinella infection in the horse: the risk from animal product feeding practices.

A discovery in 2002 of a Trichinella spiralis-infected horse in Serbia offered an opportunity to conduct needed epidemiological studies on how horses, considered herbivores, acquire a meat-borne parasite. This enigma has persisted since the first human outbreaks from infected horse meat occurred in then 1970s. The trace back of the infected horse to a farm owner was carried out. Interviews and investigations on the farm led to the conclusion that the owner had fed the horse food waste in order to condition the horse prior to sale. Further investigations were then carried out to determine the f

Quantitative determination of tetracyclines in medicated feed for food-producing animals by HPLC-DAD.

Tetracyclines are a group of antibiotic substances largely administered through medicated feed to control diseases in food-producing animals. Fine dosing of antibiotics contained in medicated feed is crucial for the success of the treatment as well as minimising potential threats such as the spread of antimicrobial resistance and the transfer of antibiotic residues in food. A rapid analytical method based on HPLC with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) was developed to quantify oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline and doxycycline in medicated feed. The reported method underwent in-house validation

Swallow Safety is Determined by Bolus Volume During Infant Feeding in an Animal Model.

Feeding difficulties are especially prevalent in preterm infants, although the mechanisms driving these difficulties are poorly understood due to a lack of data on healthy infants. One potential mechanism of dysphagia in adults is correlated with bolus volume. Yet, whether and how bolus volume impacts swallow safety in infant feeding is unknown. A further complication for safe infant swallowing is recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury due to patent ductus arteriosus surgery, which exacerbates the issues that preterm infants face and can increase the risk of dysphagia. Here, we used a validate

Determination of methylbenzoquate in premixes and animal feeds using liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.

A rapid analytical procedure was developed and tested for routine identification and quantification of methylbenzoquate in feeds by liquid chromatography (LC). The ground feed samples were extracted using methanol-water (80 + 20, v/v) at 65 degrees-70 degrees C in a water bath for premixes and in dichloromethane at 45 degrees C in a water bath for final feeds, respectively. The extract of final feeds was cleaned using solid-phase extraction on silica columns. Both the final feed and premix extracts were analyzed by reversed-phase LC on a NovaPak C18 column (3.9 x 150 mm; 4 microm) with methano

[Detection of bovine-derived materials in import animal feeds and food by PCR assay].

A PCR assay for detection and identification of bovine--derived materials in import animal feeds and food is developed. A 271 bp sequence from bovine specific mitochondrial DNA is amplified. The amplified specific sequence of the bovine mtDNA from meat and feed samples is demonstrated by both direct sequencing and restriction endonuclease digestion yield analysis. This method can detect bovine mtDNA in those less than 0.125% of bovine meat. Owing that this method is specific, rapid and sensitive, it can be utilized as a routine control assay in prevention of spreading of bovine spongiform ence

Whole-crop harvestable chicory for the phytoextraction of copper from wine-growing soils and its use in animal feed.

BACKGROUND: Since 2018, European Union regulations have reduced copper (Cu) doses in viticulture to combat fungal diseases, but Cu continues to accumulate in soils, potentially harming soil organisms. The aim of our study was to reduce the Cu content of soils by means of phytoextraction, followed by the reuse of Cu for animal feed supplements. RESULTS: Firstly, hydroponic crops (brown mustard, chicory, hemp, oats and sunflower) showed that plant growth decreased with increasing Cu exposure (0.32 up to 280 μmol L-1), except for ryegrass and buckwheat. The roots accumulated the most Cu, and buc
