The contribution of bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA) in the investigation of crimes against domestic and wild animals.

Crimes against domestic and wild animals represent a growing global concern that introduces unique investigative challenges. Although Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) is a well-established discipline in human-centric forensics, its potential within veterinary medicine remains significantly underutilized. To bridge this critical gap, this review moves from foundational theory to the practical application of BPA in animal-related contexts. First, the article establishes the scientific validity of this application by demonstrating that fluid dynamic differences between human and animal blood are

Determination of orotic acid in urine.

Orotic acid was separated from other urinary constituents by ion-pair formation with tetrabutylammonium, and isocratic elution from a reversed-phase column. Absorbance at 280 nm was recorded for quantitation. Owing to the better column characteristics the separations are somewhat faster, and the sensitivity of the method is higher than those of analogous methods using anion-exchange columns. The method was used for the determination of orotic acid in human urine, in urine of rats with portacaval shunts and in small (30 microliters) urine samples from sparse fur mice. Shunted rats excreted ca.

Use of acoustic signals in Cape fur seal mother-pup reunions: individual signature, signal propagation and pup home range.

The Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) is one of the most colonial mammals, with colonies of up to hundreds of thousands of individuals during the breeding season. During the lactation period, mothers and pups are regularly separated as females undertake multi-day foraging trips at sea. Mothers and pups use a mutual vocal recognition system to reunite after separation. Such communication is highly constrained by both high background noise and risk of individual confusion owing to the density of seals. This study aimed to experimentally assess the acoustic features relevant for mot

Detection and Genome Sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 in a Domestic Cat with Respiratory Signs in Switzerland.

Since the emergence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in late 2019, domestic cats have been demonstrated to be susceptible to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) under natural and experimental conditions. As pet cats often live in very close contact with their owners, it is essential to investigate SARS-CoV-2 infections in cats in a One-Health context. This study reports the first SARS-CoV-2 infection in a cat in a COVID-19-affected household in Switzerland. The cat (Cat 1) demonstrated signs of an upper respiratory tract infection, including sneezing, inappetence, and

Retroviral-mediated gene transfer of human ornithine transcarbamylase into primary hepatocytes of spf and spf-ash mice.

The sparse fur (spf) and the sparse fur/abnormal skin and hair (spf-ash) mice are two murine models of the human X-linked disorder ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency. A defective recombinant retrovirus, delta N2OTC was used to transduce primary hepatocytes derived from these mutant animals. Transduction of the primary cultures was highly efficient, with an average proviral copy number of 0.5-2 per cell in the population of transduced hepatocytes. Northern analysis and slot blots of total RNA isolated from transduced cells showed levels of human OTC mRNA to be equivalent to that presen

A simplified sample preparation for hair and skin proteins towards the application of archaeological fur and leather.

Conventional protocols for proteomics analysis usually start by extracting or solubilizing the proteins from their substrates. This step can be challenging for archaeological proteins, when they are heavily contaminated or decayed. The remains of animal fur/leather objects from an early medieval burial in Trossingen (580 CE) from Southwest Germany were submitted to proteomics analysis for species identification. One leather sample (TS3) yielded enough proteins to be identified as cow using a urea-based extraction (method "U"), confirming the microscopic identification. But two other samples (T

[Palaeoparasitological analysis of guinea pig mummies of the Chiribaya culture, Moquegua Valley, Peru].

During several excavations of archeological sites in the Moquegua Valley, Southern Peru, various guinea pig mummies (Cavia aperea f. porcellus) have been discovered. They belong to the Chiribaya Culture (900-1100 AD). The outstanding preservation of the mummified animals gave rise to the idea of a paleoparasitological analysis. In the fur, numerous well preserved ectoparasites (lice, fleas, mites) could be recovered. Generally, ectoparasite remains are rarely found among archeological material. This is the first account of an extensive ectoparasitological analysis of animal mummies in Peru. A

Distribution of metals in tissues of beaver, raccoon and otter from Ontario, Canada.

Mercury and selenium concentrations were positively correlated in liver tissue of beaver, raccoon and otter from an undisturbed watershed in south central Ontario. Selenium accumulation in piscivorous mammals may represent a protective mechanism against methylmercury toxicity to animals exposed to high mercury levels in their diet. This paper also reports the levels of several other metals in tissues of three wild fur-bearing mammal species.

Acute gastric dilatation with volvulus in a northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus).

Acute gastric dilatation with volvulus occurred in a 4-year-old female northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus). The animal had been maintained in an outdoor exhibit at Mystic Marinelife Aquarium (Mystic, Connecticut, USA) from June 1989 to March 1994. On necropsy, we observed a 360 degrees clockwise rotation of the stomach about its mesenteric axis as viewed ventrodorsally. The stomach was markedly distended with gas, fluid, and partially digested fish. The spleen followed the rotation of the stomach 360 degrees and was enlarged and congested with twisted mesentery. This is the first reported

[Anthrax].

Having dwelled on the etiopathogenetic, pathologic, and clinical features of human infections caused by B. anthracis, the authors review and analyze epidemiological data of the cases of anthrax registered in Italy during the last ten years. Actual possibilities for prevention are evaluated in view of the fact that enzootic foci still exist in our country which are clearly responsible for the typically occupational occurrence of this type of infection in certain at-risk categories (farmers, husbandmen, butchers, veterinarians, but also workers in those branches of industry which use materials o

Update on Diseases in Chinchillas: 2013-2019.

Chinchillas have been used mostly as fur animals and as animal models for human ontological diseases and only recently have been recognized as excellent, long-lived, and robust pet rodents. This review aims to provide updated information on emerging disease conditions in pet chinchillas, such as Streptococcus equi subsp zooepidemicus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Furthermore, this review article provides updated information on previously documented disorders, such as urolithiasis and middle ear disease, in chinchillas. This article is intended to serve as a complement to the current veterinary r

Habitat selection and influence on hunting success in female Australian fur seals.

Determining the factors influencing habitat selection and hunting success in top predators is crucial for understanding how these species may respond to environmental changes. For marine top predators, such factors have been documented in pelagic foragers, with habitat use and hunting success being linked to chlorophyll-a concentrations, sea surface temperature and light conditions. In contrast, little is known about the determinants of benthic marine predators. The Australian fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus) is a benthic-diving forager that has a breeding and foraging distribution

Myeloid and histiocytic sarcomas in subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis, Brazil.

Histopathological and immunohistochemical methods were used to diagnose round cell tumors in 2 subantarctic fur seals Arctocephalus tropicalis with marked anemia. Although wild-born, both individuals were placed under human care while juveniles in a Brazilian aquarium. Both pinnipeds were PCR tested for herpesvirus, and 1 was infected with otariid gammaherpesvirus 5 (OtHV-5), previously described in a subantarctic fur seal stranded in Brazil. Although some gammaherpesviruses can cause sarcomas and other neoplasms, it was not possible to definitively associate OtHV-5 with the neoplasm. To our k

Use of CO-oximetry to confirm carboxyhemoglobinemia in cats involved in secondary arson homicide.

The body of a deceased human and 4 deceased cats were found in a house while a fire was being extinguished. As a result of these findings, arson, homicide, and animal death investigations were opened. As part of the animal death investigation, all of the cats were submitted for veterinary forensic autopsies. All cats had soot on the fur and had soot deposits within the oral cavity, esophagus, and respiratory tract. Two cats had soot within the stomach. Cardiac blood was analyzed for carboxyhemoglobin using a CO-oximeter, and all cats had levels >65%. The cause of death was determined to be due

Increased radiation from Chernobyl decreases the expression of red colouration in natural populations of bank voles (Myodes glareolus).

Pheomelanin is a pink to red version of melanin pigment deposited in skin and hair. Due to its bright colour, pheomelanin plays a crucial function in signalling, in particular sexual signalling. However, production of pheomelanin, as opposed to its dark alternative, eumelanin, bears costs in terms of consumption of antioxidants important for protection of DNA against naturally produced reactive oxidative species. Therefore, decreased expression of pheomelanin is expected in organisms exposed to severe oxidative stress such as that caused by exposure to chronic ionizing radiation. We tested if

Cutaneous melanin exhibiting fluorescence emission under near-infrared light excitation.

Under ultraviolet and visible light excitation, melanin is essentially a nonfluorescent substance. This work reports our study on near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence properties of melanins, and explores potential applications of NIR fluorescence techniques for evaluating skin disorders involving melanin. The NIR fluorescence spectrum is obtained using a fiber optic NIR spectrometer under 785-nm laser excitation. In vitro measurements are performed on synthetic dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) melanin, melanin extracted from Sepia ink sacs, human hair, animal fur, and bird feathers. Paired spectral c

Neuropathologic study in the heterozygotes of X-linked brindled mutant mouse.

The clinical and morphological features were studied in female heterozygotes of the sex-linked brindled mutant mice, which are an appropriate animal model for human Menkes' kinky hair disease (MKHD). Clinically, female heterozygotes presented phenotypical variety. In these heterozygotes, we distinguished the unique group of mice, which showed mottled white and dark brown fur and curly whiskers. We designated this unique group "heterozygote, variant type", in contrast to the remaining group--"heterozygote, usual type"--, of which the fur was mottled dark and light brown, and the whiskers were s

Colour Variants in Siberian Cats: A Comprehensive Review of Phenotype, Genetics, and Breed Registry Standards.

Siberian cats are characterized by a high level of genetic variability, which is also reflected in a wide range of colour variations. Knowledge about the genetic background of these coat colour varieties is fragmented and predominantly derived from research on other breeds, with inconsistencies in nomenclature across major feline organizations. This review aims to offer a comprehensive synthesis of the genetic mechanisms underlying coat colour and pattern variation in Siberian cats, while also critically examining how these phenotypes are defined, named, and recognized across key international

Identification of a candidate genetic variant for the Himalayan color pattern in dogs.

Acromelanism is a temperature-dependent hypopigmentation pattern commonly manifested as the Himalayan coat color found in rabbits, rats, mice, minks, and gerbils, wherein the extreme "points" are dark and the torso is pale. It is known as the Siamese pattern in cats. Himalayan color is genetically determined by the allelic variant ch of the locus C, later identified as the tyrosinase gene TYR. The tyrosinase functions at the initial steps of melanin production, and alteration of its activity by sequence changes results in pigmentation defects in vertebrates. The presence of acromelanism in dog

A Jurassic gliding euharamiyidan mammal with an ear of five auditory bones.

Gliding is a distinctive locomotion type that has been identified in only three mammal species from the Mesozoic era. Here we describe another Jurassic glider that belongs to the euharamiyidan mammals and shows hair details on its gliding membrane that are highly similar to those of extant gliding mammals. This species possesses a five-boned auditory apparatus consisting of the stapes, incus, malleus, ectotympanic and surangular, representing, to our knowledge, the earliest known definitive mammalian middle ear. The surangular has not been previously identified in any mammalian middle ear, and
