Cryptosporidiosis is an infection caused by a protozoon that inhabits the gastrointestinal tract. More than forty valid species have been described in the genus Cryptosporidium, infecting a broad range of hosts around the world, some with zoonotic transmission and others with predominant anthroponotic transmission. Prevalence studies conducted in Latin American countries have been specific, without consolidating information on species prevalences. Thus, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis addressing the prevalence of Cryptosporidium species in animals in

Ear disease is a common disorder seen in exotic companion mammals, especially in ferrets, rabbits, and rats. This article describes patient preparation, equipment, and video otoscopy technique in exotic companion mammals. This noninvasive technique facilitates accurate diagnosis of diseases affecting the external ear canal or middle ear. Moreover, therapeutic otoscopic evaluation of the external ear facilitates foreign body removal, external ear canal flushing, intralesional drug administration, myringotomy, and middle ear cavity flushing.

On the 21st of August 1997 the Polish legislature introduced the first animal protection law nr 724. This act however failed to specify in a clear and proper manner the problem of possession and maintenance of dangerous animals, which allows its multiple interpretations. Poland ratified the Washington Convention in 1990 restricting the trade of animals classified as endangered species. The present regulations enable illegal purchase and trade of those animals. According to the available data illegal trade of such animals, as well as the trade of products obtained from them, ranks in the third

Blindness characterized by dilated unresponsive pupils and funduscopic evidence of varying degrees of vitritis, retinal vasculitis, retinitis, chorioretinitis, and optic neuritis developed in 21 alpacas and 1 llama within a 30-day period. The animals were part of a group of approximately 100 animals imported from Chile one year earlier. The animals had spent 6 months in quarantine and then, for the 6 months preceding the epizootic, were housed at an exotic animal import-export farm, where the disease developed. Four of the affected animals also had signs of neurologic dysfunction. A herpesviru

Skin surgery in exotic companion mammals requires a nuanced understanding of species-specific characteristics. The fragile epidermis and predisposition to some skin tumors, incidental injuries, or self-trauma, necessitate meticulous surgical approaches and rigorous postoperative monitoring. Advances in reconstructive techniques have substantially expanded therapeutic possibilities. The emerging technologies presented offer promising potential for optimizing wound healing, although their clinical use remains largely anecdotal and requires robust validation. By combining technical excellence whi

This report documents nephrotoxicosis in a North American cougar (Felis concolor) caused by gentamicin overdose and describes a method of calculating drug dosages by metabolic scaling for species in which pharmacokinetic studies have not been performed. Determining drug dosages by metabolic scaling can decrease the likelihood of administering inappropriate drug doses in exotic animals.

Melioidosis is an emerging infectious disease of humans and animals in the tropics caused by the soil bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. Despite high fatality rates, the ecology of B.pseudomallei remains unclear. We used a combination of field and laboratory studies to investigate B.pseudomallei colonization of native and exotic grasses in northern Australia. Multivariable and spatial analyses were performed to determine significant predictors for B.pseudomallei occurrence in plants and soil collected longitudinally from field sites. In plant inoculation experiments, the impact of B.pseudoma

Exotic small mammal medicine is a relatively new specialty area within veterinary medicine. Ferrets, rabbits, and rodents have long been used as animal models in human medical research investigations, resulting in a body of basic anatomic and physiologic information that can be used by veterinarians treating these species. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of veterinary articles that describe clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment options of gastrointestinal (GI) disease as it affects exotic small mammals. Although there is little reference material relating to exotic small mammal GI

This article provides a comprehensive overview of dental disease in myomorphic rodents, particularly rats and hamsters, which are increasingly being presented to veterinary clinics due to their popularity as pets. The most common dental problems include malocclusion, periodontal disease, caries, and odontogenic abscesses. Diagnosis is based on a thorough clinical examination, stomatoscopy under anesthesia and imaging-techniques such as radiography and computed tomography, which are crucial for detecting pathologic lesions, planning treatment, and preventing complications. Treatment strategies

Beside dogs and cats, the most common pets worldwide, an increasing number of pocket pets and exotic pets are making their way to more and more households, especially in North America and Europe. Although many of these animals make appropriate pets, they also can be a source of many zoonotic diseases, especially in young children and immunocompromised individuals. Some of these diseases can be life threatening, such as rabies, rat bite fever, and plague. Some others are quite common, because of the frequency of the pathogens harbored by these species, such as salmonellosis in reptiles and amph

Despite limited studies, free-living birds are considered reservoirs of several diseases, including zoonotic diseases. Thus, we aimed to investigate the presence and characteristics of Campylobacter spp., Escherichia coli, and Salmonella spp. in wild birds assessing their potential risks to human and animal health. Fecal samples were collected from wild and exotic rescued birds, as well as exotic parrots from commercial breeding facilities. Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. were not detected in the samples. E. coli was biochemically confirmed in 58.33% of the samples, resulting nine disti

Tularemia is a zoonosis caused by Francisella tularensis; it mainly affects wild animals and only occasionally affects human beings. Uncontrolled trade involving "exotic" animals could become a new route of acquisition. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy who contracted the disease through a bite from a prairie dog. Outbreaks of tularemia have recently been described in some of these animals captured in Texas (USA) and subsequently sold to other countries. Infection due to Yersinia pestis has also been described in humans through contact with prairie dogs with the disease. Streptomycin and

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted on Mycobacterium spp. isolated from human patients indicate that sequencing of a 711 bp portion of the rpoB gene can be useful in assigning a species identity, particularly for members of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC). Given that MAC are important pathogens in livestock, companion animals, and zoo/exotic animals, we were interested in evaluating the use of rpoB sequencing for identification of Mycobacterium isolates of veterinary origin.
RESULTS: A total of 386 isolates, collected over 2008 - June 2011 from 378 animals (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and ma

Changes in the global trade market have led to a thriving international pet trade in exotic animals, birds, and puppies. The flood of animals crossing the United States' borders satisfies the public demand for these pets but is not without risk. Imported pets may be infected with diseases that put animals or the public at risk. Numerous agencies work together to reduce the risk of animal disease introduction, but regulations may need to be modified to ensure compliance. With more than 280,000 dogs and 183,000 wildlife shipments being imported into the United States each year, veterinarians mus

Hookworms are widespread zoonotic parasites affecting humans and companion animals worldwide. We report molecular characterization of Ancylostoma ceylanicum and A. braziliense in a cat imported into Romania from Guadeloupe, an overseas administrative region of the French Republic in the Caribbean. This finding underscores the role of molecular diagnostics in detecting the transboundary introduction of exotic hookworms with significant zoonotic potential.

Illegal importation of animals as pets might be followed by the introduction of exotic tick species, potential vectors of pathogens that can have an impact on wildlife and/or domestic animals and on humans. Therefore, permanent measures of surveillance and control on imported reptiles are emphasized. In February 2024, black-breasted leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) (n = 31) were illegally imported into Sweden from Thailand. The turtles were sent by the Swedish Customs Criminal Department West in Gothenburg to a public aquarium and terrarium (Tropicarium, Kolmården, Östergötland county) to be

Because they provide a high density and diversity of vertebrate species, small water pools and shaded environments, zoological gardens offer ideal living conditions for numerous mosquito species. Depending on their host preferences and vector competencies, these species may be able to transmit pathogens between native and non-adapted exotic blood host species, thereby causing morbidity and mortality among valuable zoo animals. To determine the extent to which native mosquito species feed on captive and wild animals, as well as on humans, in two German zoological gardens, mosquitoes were collec

Exotic pets, including hedgehogs, have become popular in recent years among pet owners, especially in North America. Such animals can carry and introduce zoonotic agents, a fact well illustrated by the recent outbreak of monkeypox in pet prairie dogs. We reviewed known and potential zoonotic diseases that could be carried and transmitted by pet hedgehogs or by wild-caught hedgehogs that have been rescued.
