Local Texture Anisotropy as an Estimate of Muscle Quality in Ultrasound Imaging.

This study introduces local pattern texture anisotropy as a novel parameter to differentiate healthy and disordered muscle and to gauge the severity of muscle impairments based on B-mode ultrasound images. Preliminary human results are also presented. A local pattern texture anisotropy index (TAI) was computed in one region of interest in the short head of the biceps brachii. The effects of gain settings and box sizes required for TAI computation were investigated. Between-day reliability was studied in patients with sporadic inclusion body myositis (n = 26). The ability of the TAI to discrimi

Investigation on the Regional Loss Factor and Its Anisotropy for Aortic Aneurysms.

An aortic aneurysm is a lethal arterial disease that mainly occurs in the thoracic and abdominal regions of the aorta. Thoracic aortic aneurysms are prevalent in the root/ascending parts of the aorta and can lead to aortic rupture resulting in the sudden death of patients. Understanding the biomechanical and histopathological changes associated with ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (ATAAs), this study investigates the mechanical properties of the aorta during strip-biaxial tensile cycles. The loss factor-defined as the ratio of dissipated energy to the energy absorbed during a tensile cycle

Fractional anisotropy in the substantia nigra in Parkinson's disease: a complex picture.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This study employs magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diffusion tensor imaging to compare diffusion measures in the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) with healthy controls using longitudinal data. METHODS: One-hundred and twenty-two patients and 34 controls were included at baseline. The MRI investigations were repeated after 1, 3 and 5 years. The diffusion measures were quantified using fractional anisotropy and mean, radial and axial diffusion (FA, MD, RD, AD). Regions of interest included the anterior, middle and posterior substantia nigra (SN), but als

A study of the anisotropy and tension/compression behavior of human cervical tissue.

The cervix plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy pregnancy, acting as a mechanical barrier to hold the fetus in utero during gestation. Altered mechanical properties of the cervical tissue are suspected to play a critical role in spontaneous preterm birth. Both MRI and X-ray data in the literature indicate that cervical stroma contains regions of preferentially aligned collagen fibers along anatomical directions (circumferential/longitudinal/radial). In this study, a mechanical testing protocol is developed to investigate the large-strain response of cervical tissue in uniaxial tension

Loss of anisotropy in trigeminal neuralgia revealed by diffusion tensor imaging.

We studied the trigeminal nerve in seven healthy volunteers and six patients with trigeminal neuralgia using the diffusion tensor imaging derived parameter fractional anisotropy (FA). While controls did not show a difference between both sides, there was a reduction of FA in the affected nerve in three of six patients with accompanying nerve-vessel conflict and atrophy. Reversibility of abnormally low FA values was demonstrated in one patient successfully treated with microvascular decompression.

Binding of XPA and RPA to damaged DNA investigated by fluorescence anisotropy.

The proteins XPA and RPA are assumed to be involved in primary damage recognition of global genome nucleotide excision repair. XPA as well as RPA have been each reported to specifically bind DNA lesions, and ternary complex formation with damaged DNA has also been shown. We employed fluorescence anisotropy measurements to study the DNA-binding properties of XPA and RPA under true equilibrium conditions using damaged DNA probes carrying a terminal fluorescein modification as a reporter. XPA binds with low affinity and in a strongly salt-dependent manner to DNA containing a 1,3-d(GTG) intrastran

Orbital-Ordering Switch for Tunable Magnetic Anisotropy in Two-Dimensional CrCl2.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) intricately links an electron's spin and orbital motions, underpinning a myriad of physical phenomena from magnetocrystalline anisotropy to topological spin texture. While the prevailing focus centers on asymmetry-induced spin splitting like Rashba/Dresselhaus SOC, an unexplored avenue lies in orbital ordering, shaping crystal field symmetry crucial for centrosymmetric or low-dimensional magnetism. Our study presents a novel approach to manipulate magnetic anisotropy in two-dimensional (2D) magnets by toggling orbital orders in monolayer and bilayer CrCl2. We demonstr

Engineering In-Plane Anisotropy in 2D Materials via Surface-Bound Ligands.

2D materials exhibiting in-plane anisotropy enable novel functionality in electronic, optoelectronic, and photonic devices, yet their availability is generally limited to naturally occurring low-symmetry van der Waals compounds. Here, we demonstrate an approach to structural engineering in a family of blue-emitting 2D silver phenylchalcogenolate semiconductors based on steric interactions among surface-bound organic molecular ligands. By strategically halogenating specific sites of phenyl ligands, we demonstrate dramatic changes to the inorganic AgSe plane in mithrene (silver phenylselenolate,

Transient Cytoskeletal Anisotropy Encodes Short-Term Mechanical Memory in Glioblastoma Cells.

Cells experience time-varying mechanical cues when navigating complex microenvironments, yet whether and how they retain a short-term memory of recent deformations remains unclear. Here, we show that glioblastoma cells encode such memory through transient cytoskeletal anisotropy. Combining magneto-mechanical actuation, nanoindentation, and selective cytoskeletal perturbations, we find that actin architectures drive opposite mechanical responses: stress fibers stiffen cells under stretch, whereas the actin cortex governs softening under compression. Vimentin intermediate filaments stabilize act

Trifold anisotropy and strain-driven switching in octagon-pentagon graphene nanoribbons.

Octagon-pentagon graphene nanoribbons (OPG-ZNRs) provide a non-hexagonal carbon platform in which edge topology can couple electronic, vibrational and mechanical properties. Here, five hydrogen-passivated OPG-ZNR families are investigated to establish how crystallographic direction, edge-ring sequence, uniaxial strain and lateral confinement determine their response. Distinct IR and Raman signatures are obtained for the pentagon, octagon and mixed pentagon-octagon edges, providing spectroscopic markers for the different ribbon families. Under uniaxial strain between -5% and +5%, the ribbons se

Age-related changes in front-rear anisotropy of peripersonal space representation.

Peripersonal space (PPS) refers to the multisensory space surrounding the body and plays an important role in interactions with external objects and the preparation of defensive responses. Recent studies suggest that PPS varies as a function of spatial direction. Since PPS is shaped by bodily action capabilities in nearby space, age-related declines in bodily and motor functions may alter PPS representation in older adults. However, whether older adults maintain front-rear anisotropy in PPS similar to that in younger adults, and such spatial characteristics are related to sensorimotor function

CSAKD: Determining Absolute Ligand Affinities From 19F NMR Chemical Shift Anisotropy.

Small-molecule drug discovery typically begins with the screening of compound libraries to identify initial hits, which are subsequently optimized into lead compounds and, ultimately, drug candidates. Diverse screening methodologies are employed, including DNA-encoded library technology, high-throughput screening, and fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD). Among these, FBDD is particularly powerful when integrated with structure-guided drug design and biophysical affinity measurements. However, accurately quantifying the weak binding affinities of fragments remains a significant challenge. To a

Fluorescence Anisotropy of Riboflavin vis-à-vis Protochlorophyllide in Lemon Juice.

A violet laser of wavelength 405 nm is used to excite steady-state fluorescence in the juice of a lemon. Prominent wavelength peaks appear at 520 and 670 nm due to emissions from riboflavin (vitamin B2) and protochlorophyllide (pchlide), the precursor of chlorophyll [Formula: see text], respectively. Using a polariser for excitation with vertically polarised light, and another one in parallel as well as in perpendicular positions to this one in the emission-path, counts at the two peaks in the high-resolution spectrometer are noted. Fluorescence anisotropies calculated from the obtained intens

Anisotropy Factor Spectra for Weakly Allowed Electronic Transitions in Chiral Ketones.

Quantum chemical calculations of one-photon absorption, electronic circular dichroism and anisotropy factor spectra for the A-band transition of fenchone, camphor and 3-methylcyclopentanone (3MCP) are reported. While the only weakly allowed nature of the transition leads to comparatively large anisotropies, a proper theoretical description of the absorption for such a transition requires to account for non-Condon effects. We present experimental data for the anisotropy of 3MCP in the liquid phase and show that corresponding Herzberg-Teller corrections are critical to reproduce the main experim

Extending the FDTD GVADE method nonlinear polarization vector to include anisotropy.

In this paper the finite-difference time-domain general vector auxiliary differential equation method [Opt. Express14, 8305 (2006)10.1364/OE.14.008305], nonlinear polarization vector, the nonlinear electric dipole moment per unit volume, is extended to include anisotropy, in nonlinear isotropic media at optical frequencies. The theory is presented for extending the numerical method in 3D Cartesian coordinates, and then example simulation results are presented for two isotropic media. First, the simplified 2D transverse magnetic case is revisited for the fused silica example introduced in the 2

Region specific anisotropy and rate dependence of Göttingen minipig brain tissue.

Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of morbidity in civilian as well as military populations. Computational simulations of injurious events are an important tool to understanding the biomechanics of brain injury and evaluating injury criteria and safety measures. However, these computational models are highly dependent on the material parameters used to represent the brain tissue. Reported material properties of tissue from the cerebrum and cerebellum remain poorly defined at high rates and with respect to anisotropy. In this work, brain tissue from the cerebrum and cerebellum of male Gött

Extremely Large Anisotropy of Effective Gilbert Damping in Half-Metallic CrO2.

Half-metals are a class of quantum materials with 100% spin polarization at the Fermi level and have attracted a lot of attention for future spintronic device applications. CrO2 is one of the most promising half-metal candidates for which the electrical and magnetic properties have been intensively studied in the last several decades. Here, we report the observation of a giant anisotropy (∼1600%) of effective Gilbert damping in the single-crystalline half-metallic (100)-CrO2 thin films, which is significantly larger than the values observed on conventional ferromagnetic Fe and CoFe thin films.

Resistance-Chiral Anisotropy of Chiral Mesostructured Half-metallic Fe3 O4 Films.

Half-metallic materials are theoretically predicted to be metallic and insulating, which have not been confirmed experimentally, and the predictions are still in doubt. We report the resistance-chiral anisotropy (R-ChA), i.e., chirality-dependent electrical conductivity, in chiral mesostructured Fe3 O4 films (CMFFs) grown on the substrates via a hydrothermal method using amino acids as symmetry-breaking agents. Two levels of chirality exist in the CMFFs: primary distortion of the crystal lattice forms twisted nanoflakes, and secondary helical stacking of nanoflakes forms fan-shaped nanoplates.

Three-dimensional anisotropy contrast imaging of pontine gliomas: 2 case reports.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging can provide a preoperative diagnosis of pontine glioma, but the findings sometimes do not correspond with the clinical symptoms. We describe 2 cases of pontine gliomas who did not present with motor and sensory disturbance. CASE REPORT: Three-dimensional anisotropy contrast (3DAC) imaging was used to assess the neuronal tracts in 2 patients with pontine gliomas. Conventional MR imaging depicted markedly abnormal findings of abnormally high or heterogeneous signal intensity in the pons in 2 cases. In contrast, 3DAC imaging obviously showed the corticospin

Diffusion Anisotropy Predicts Directional Progression After Complete Resection of Frontal Glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite complete resection of contrast-enhancing tumor, glioblastoma frequently progresses due to microscopic invasion beyond surgical margins. In frontal glioblastoma, functional tolerance of anterior and lateral regions enables consideration of supramaximal resection when invasion direction can be anticipated. Imaging biomarkers that predict postresection progression direction may thus inform surgical planning. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively recruited multicenter cohort of patients with newly diagnosed isocitrate dehydrogenase-wi
