Picture perfect? Reliability of craniofacial anthropometry using three-dimensional digital stereophotogrammetry.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of facial characteristics is important for research in dysmorphology, otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial, and plastic surgical disciplines, among others. Three-dimensional surface imaging systems offer a quick and practical method for quantifying craniofacial variation and appear to be highly reliable. However, some sources of measurement error have not yet been thoroughly evaluated. METHODS: The authors assessed the reliability of using stereophotogrammetry for measuring craniofacial characteristics in 40 individuals, including 20 without craniofacial condition

Anthropometry of the Human Scaphoid Waist by Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography.

Published measurements for the scaphoid are scarce. The purpose of this study is to define anthropometric norms for the waist of the scaphoid to assist in optimizing bone graft quantity and implant use. Computed tomography images of the wrist were reviewed by three surgeons. Anthropometric data were gathered, including the scaphoid waist diameter in two dimensions and the scaphoid waist volume. Each study was measured twice, allowing for determination of inter- and intraobserver reliability. Forty-three studies were examined (23 female and 20 male). Average measurements of the scaphoid waist w

Anthropometry in relation to prostate cancer risk in the Netherlands Cohort Study.

In the Netherlands Cohort Study, the authors investigated whether anthropometry is associated with prostate cancer risk. At baseline in 1986, 58,279 men aged 55-69 years completed a self-administered questionnaire on diet, anthropometry, and other risk factors for cancer. After 6.3 years of follow-up, 681 cases were available with complete data on height and weight at baseline, and for 523 cases, there were data for weight at age 20 years. In both age-adjusted and multivariate case-cohort analyses (adjusted for age, family history of prostate cancer, and socioeconomic status), height, body mas

Congenital anomalies and anthropometry of 42 individuals with deletions of chromosome 18q.

Deletions of chromosome 18q are among the most common segmental aneusomies compatible with life. The estimated frequency is approximately 1/40,000 live births [Cody JD, Pierce JF, Brkanac Z, Plaetke R, Ghidoni PD, Kaye CI, Leach RJ. 1997. Am. J. Med. Genet. 69:280-286]. Most deletions are terminal encompassing as much as 36 Mb, but interstitial deletions have also been reported. We have evaluated 42 subjects with deletions of 18q at our institution. This is the largest number of individuals with this chromosome abnormality studied by one group of investigators. Here we report the physical find

Novel Anthropometry-Based Calculation of the Body Heat Capacity in the Korean Population.

Heat capacity (HC) has an important role in the temperature regulation process, particularly in dealing with the heat load. The actual measurement of the body HC is complicated and is generally estimated by body-composition-specific data. This study compared the previously known HC estimating equations and sought how to define HC using simple anthropometric indices such as weight and body surface area (BSA) in the Korean population. Six hundred participants were randomly selected from a pool of 902 healthy volunteers aged 20 to 70 years for the training set. The remaining 302 participants were

Perspectives on integrating experimental and epidemiologic research on diet, anthropometry and breast cancer.

Three perspectives on the integration of experimental and epidemiologic research on diet, anthropometry and breast cancer are presented. 1) Although body weight and height have been linked to breast cancer risk by epidemiologic research, their roles have not been directly explored with animal models. However, basic, clinical and epidemiologic research on obesity and associated metabolic alterations may be pertinent. Individual differences in the timing and magnitude of weight gain and loss during adult life need to be considered in epidemiologic studies of adiposity and breast cancer, along wi
