A new species of the genus Leptobrachella is described from northern Guangxi, China, which emphasizes the significant and ongoing underestimation of amphibian diversity within the genus in the karst regions of southwestern China. The new species is phylogenetically sister to Leptobrachella maoershanensis in the 16S ribosomal RNA mitochondrial gene, and can be distinguished from all known congeners by a combination of morphological characteristics. It inhabits montane streams (1200-1400 m a.s.l.) in Guangxi Huaping National Nature Reserve and is sympatric with L. dong but segregates reproductiv

The rising production and improper disposal of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) into aquatic systems present considerable environmental challenges, especially when these particles interact with other contaminants such as cadmium (Cd). Thus, the current study aimed to evaluate the potential toxic effects on the gills, chondrocranium, body growth, and mortality of Aquarana catesbeiana tadpoles. The tadpoles were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of TiO2 NPs (10 µg L-1), and CdCl2 (10 µg L-1), both individually and in combination, for 30 days (chronic exposure), along wi

African pygmy toads of the genus Poyntonophrynus are some of the least known species of African toads. The genus comprises ten recognized species endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, five of which are restricted to southwestern Africa. Recent field research in Angola provided new material for three species of Poyntonophrynus, including a morphologically distinctive population from the Serra da Neve Inselberg. Based on a combination of external morphology, high-resolution computed tomography scanning, and molecular phylogenetic analysis, the Serra da Neve population is described as new species that i

Previously, only one species of torrent frog (Amolops larutensis) was thought to occur throughout Peninsular Malaysia. However, genomic work has demonstrated that populations from eastern Peninsular Malaysia form two separate lineages that are genetically distinct from A. larutensis that is now restricted to the western half of Peninsular Malaysia. This study demonstrates that all three lineages can be morphologically distinguished from each other, thereby providing additional support for the recognition of the eastern lineages as two distinct species. These lineages are described herein as Am

This communication provides notes on 2 species of toads, Chaunus schneideri and Chaunus granulosus, infested with ixodid ticks, Amblyomma rotundatum, from the provinces of Corrientes and Formosa in northern Argentina. Chaunus schneideri is a new amphibian host record for A. rotundatum, a species previously reported to parasitize other anurans and also reptiles. We examined 74 ticks on 5 toads. All ticks were A. rotundatum; all adults were females, and all developmental stages were randomly attached to host body parts. Ticks remained attached to one of the toads for from 7 to 17 days after the

Chondrocranial development in Ascaphus truei was studied by serial sectioning and graphical reconstruction. Nine stages (21-29; 9-18 mm TL) were examined. Mesodermal cells were distinguished from ectomesenchymal (neural crest derived) cells by retained yolk granules. Ectomesenchymal parts of the chondrocranium include the suprarostrals, pila preoptica, anterior trabecula, and palatoquadrate. Mesodermal parts of the chondrocranium include the orbital cartilage, posterior trabecula, parachordal, basiotic lamina, and otic capsule. Development of the palatoquadrate is as follows. We describe a new species of Pristimantis based on morphological and acoustic evidence from the western slopes of the Serranía del Baudó, tentatively assigned to the Pristimantis ridens species group. The new species can be distinguished from congeneric species by having coppery or reddish bronze iris, with fine black reticulations and light blue sclera, upper eyelid bearing one to three subconical tubercles, posterior surfaces of thighs generally solid brown, with small cream specks present in a few cases and groin solid brown, with some individuals showing a cream or golden blotch. Moreover,

Xenopus laevis is one of the most widely used model organism in neurobiology. It is therefore surprising, that no detailed and complete description of the cranial nerves exists for this species. Using classical histological sectioning in combination with fluorescent whole mount antibody staining and micro-computed tomography we prepared a detailed innervation map and a freely-rotatable three-dimensional (3D) model of the cranial nerves and anterior-most spinal nerves of early X. laevis tadpoles. Our results confirm earlier descriptions of the pre-otic cranial nerves and present the first detai

The genus Engystomops is divided into two groups, namely the Duovox clade and the Edentulus clade. The species of Edentulus clade have karyotypes with 2n = 22, while E. pustulatus and E. puyango, which belong to Duovox clade, have 2n = 20. To investigate if 2n = 20 is a synapomorphy of Duovox clade, we cytogenetically analyzed all the species of this group, except for E. puyango, in the present study. All of them had 2n = 20, differing from the species of Edentulus clade. Since the species already karyotyped of the genus Physalaemus, which is considered to be the sister group of Engystomops, a

Myiasis in anurans is usually caused by diptera from the Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Chloropidae, and Muscidae families. In this study, one case of cloacal myiasis and one of oral myiasis were registered in Aplastodiscus arildae, caused by Notochaeta bufonivora in Teresópolis, RJ, Brazil. With this report, a new host is listed for N. bufonivora, the first case of tree-frog myiasis caused by sarcophagid flies and the first occurrence of hylid myiasis in the Neotropical area.

The annual activity of the parathyroid gland cells and those of the ultimobranchial body cells of the frog Rana temporaria is quantitatively investigated by a morphometric study. A cosinor analysis shows a periodic succession of different parameters. The secretory activity of the parathyroid cells starts after a maximal value of external temperature in July. This activity is followed by an increase of plasma calcium which seems to induce the activity of the ultimobranchial cells.

We describe a new species of puddle frog, genus Phrynobatrachus, from southern Ivory Coast. The new species, which we designate as Phrynobatrachusmoroedelisp.nov., exhibits striking variation in colour pattern of the ventral surface with either very few small black dots or large dark or even black blotches along the edges, and differs from all other West African species of the genus by the combination of unique morphological characters: small sized (snout-vent length of 13.9-23 mm), compact-bodied frog with a short rounded to pointed snout; rough to slightly warty dorsal skin with variable col

Amphibians are among the most threatened vertebrates globally, but the physiological mechanisms underlying their vulnerability remain poorly understood, particularly in Neotropical species. This study investigated the associations among body morphometry, Hepatozoon spp. infection, and leukocyte profile of Leptodactylus vastus from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Sixty individuals were analyzed for hematologic and parasitic parameters. Hepatozoon spp. prevalence was 100%, and the leukocyte profile was atypical, characterized by a predominance of eosinophils over lymphocytes. Total gamont abundan

We describe the internal oral morphology and chondrocranial anatomy for Boana crepitans tadpoles, and compare them with available descriptions for other species in the subfamily Cophomantinae. Among species of the Boana faber group, the chondrocranial anatomy has been reported only for one species internal oral morphology and cranial anatomy are similar to other described species of Boana and Cophomantinae. B. crepitans lacks unique features in the oral cavity and chondrocranium that would distinguish it from other congeneric species. We identify six characters from the internal oral anatomy o
