BACKGROUND: Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common childhood condition characterised by excessive distress related to separation from attachment figures, often leading to social, emotional, and academic difficulties. If untreated, SAD can increase the risk of future psychopathology, highlighting the importance of effective interventions.
AIM: This scoping review systematically maps and analyzes the current evidence on intervention strategies to reduce separation anxiety and promote emotional and social well-being in children.
METHOD: Following Arksey and O'Malley's framework and PRISM

Objective: The association between childhood separation anxiety disorder (CSAD) and panic disorder (PD) has been demonstrated, although some findings are contradictory. The separation anxiety hypothesis postulates that both CSAD and PD encompass a heightened sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO2). Patients with the respiratory subtype (RS) of PD are known to be more sensitive to CO2 than those from the nonrespiratory subtype (NRS). Therefore, the primary objective centered on the comparative analysis of CSAD prevalence between RS and NRS groups, with secondary objectives focusing on the comparati

An increasing number of people own dogs due to the emotional benefits they bring to their owners. However, many owners are forced to leave their dogs at home alone, increasing the risk of developing psychological disorders such as separation anxiety, typically accompanied by complex behavioral symptoms including excessive vocalization and destructive behavior. Hence, this work proposes a multi-level hierarchical early detection system for psychological Separation Anxiety (SA) symptoms detection that automatically monitors home-alone dogs starting from the most fundamental postures, followed by

Psychodynamic understanding and systemic approach in the multi-family treatment of a day care clinic are illustrated following the case report of a seven-year old girl with school phobia due to separation anxiety. The treatment modalities of the day clinic at the University Medical Center Muenster are described focussing on the multi-systemic approach. Using psychodynamic and systemic hypotheses the process of treatment is developed. Specific interventions, differentiated into reorganizations of inner and outer world issues, are traced to psychodynamic and systemic hypotheses. In conclusion it

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the extent to which childhood separation anxiety disorder (SAD) confers risk for the development of psychopathology during young adulthood (ages 19-30).
METHOD: A subset of the participants of the Oregon Adolescent Depression Project (n = 816) was used. Subjects provided retrospective reports of lifetime mental illness (including SAD) and concurrent reports of current mental illness at age 16 and were then followed prospectively until age 30. Diagnostic assessments were conducted twice during adolescence and again at ages 24 and 30. Based on diagnosis during childhood/

A 4-year-old female Persian cat was referred with the history of separation from the owner. There was no clinical sign and everything had been reported as normal during the veterinary checkup just before separation and traveling. The history and clinical signs were fit to separation anxiety when the cat referred to us. Ten days after the diagnosis and starting of the treatment for separation anxiety, the cat was referred again with the clinical signs of chronic renal failure. Further assessments showed an inherited polycystic kidney disease. Spontaneous manifestation of polycystic kidney disea

BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between anxiety co-morbidity and age of onset of panic disorder.
METHODS: Age of onset of panic disorder and co-morbid anxiety disorders were assessed among 201 panic disorder probands with childhood separation anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, social phobia and specific phobia as part of a clinician-administered lifetime diagnostic interview. A generalized linear model was used to test the association between each anxiety co-morbidity and age of panic disorder onset while simultane

The early postnatal period represents an exceptionally vulnerable phase for the development of neurobiological alterations, aberrant behavior, and psychiatric disorders. Altered GABAergic activity in the hippocampus and the amygdala have been identified in humans diagnosed with depression or anxiety disorders, as well as in respective animal models. Changes in GABAergic activity can be visualized by immunohistochemical staining of parvalbumin (PV) protein. Therewith, alterations in PV intensity as well as in the integrity of the perineural net surrounding PV positive (PV+) interneurons have be

The frequency and severity of separation anxiety for subjects with panic disorder and major depression was compared with that for normal controls. The subjects were diagnosed according to DSM-III criteria. Each subject completed a questionnaire consisting of 9 items derived from DSM-III criteria for separation anxiety disorder. The incidence of separation anxiety and its severity were significantly higher for the panic disorder subjects than for normal controls but there was no significant difference between depressed and panic disorder subjects. Panic disorder subjects with a history of separ

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 recognized that the separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) may span the entire life course or have an adult-onset. Epidemiological data indicated a 23%-69% prevalence of SEPAD in clinical settings and a high comorbidity with both prolonged grief disorder (PGD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some authors hypothesize that while life threat represents the key trigger of PTSD, disruptions or threats to interpersonal bonds lead to PGD and SEPAD. This study aims to test the hypothesis that adult-onset SEPAD might be a trauma-related disorder, triggered by events threat

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between separation anxiety disorder (SAD) and mental disorders in a community sample and to evaluate whether separation anxiety is specifically related to panic disorder with and without agoraphobia.
METHOD: The data come from a 4-year, prospective longitudinal study of a representative cohort of adolescents and young adults aged 14-24 years at baseline in Munich, Germany. The present analyses are based on a subsample of the younger cohort that completed baseline and two follow-up investigations (n = 1,090). DSM-IV diagnoses were made using the Munich Com

The purpose of this study was to investigate parenting received in childhood and early separation anxiety experiences in young male soldiers with adjustment disorder. Fifty-four conscripts suffering from adjustment disorder completed the following questionnaires: the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), the Measurement of Parental Style (MOPS), and the Separation Anxiety Symptom Inventory (SASI). Seventy-eight conscripts, matched for age and education, were used as a control sample. The research showed that compared with the controls, patients had significantly increased scores on the SCL-

A prevalent psychiatric disorder called Child Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is characterized by extreme discomfort when a child gets separated from their primary carers. While SAD's quick consequences on kids are well-researched, its long-term implications for teenage psychopathology have received less attention. This longitudinal study aims to ascertain the connection between child SAD and future psychopathological consequences in adolescents. 500 adolescents were chosen as part of the adolescent depression project, and at the age of 17, we retrospectively evaluated past and present menta

Maternal separation (MS) plays a central role in developing physiology and psychology during the individual ontogeny process. MS is used to research the neurobiological mechanisms of mental disorders and early life stress. In this study, we investigated the effects of repeated MS and early handling (EH) on locomotor activity in an open-field test, a light-dark box test and an elevated plus-maze test of adolescent rats. The results showed that MS reduced locomotor activities in the open-field test, and increased anxiety-like behaviours in the light-dark box test and the elevated plus-maze test

INTRODUCTION: Complicated grief (CG) has been the subject of increasing attention in the past decades but its relationship with separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) is still controversial. The aim of the current study was to explore the prevalence and clinical significance of adult SEPAD in a sample of help-seeking individuals with CG.
METHODS: 151 adults with CG, enrolled in a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of (CG) treatment to that of interpersonal therapy, were assessed by means of the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-I

BACKGROUND: Childhood separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is hypothesized to share etiologic roots with panic disorder. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic and environmental sources of covariance between childhood SAD and adult onset panic attacks (AOPA), with the primary goal to determine whether these two phenotypes share a common genetic diathesis.
METHODS: Participants included parents and their monozygotic or dizygotic twins (n = 1,437 twin pairs) participating in the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development and those twins who later completed the Young Adult

There is a need to explain the high level of comorbidity between separation anxiety disorder (SAD) in adulthood and panic disorder with agoraphobia (Pd-Ag). One possibility is that inadequate specification of symptom domains and/or diagnostic questions accounts for some of the comorbidity. The present anxiety clinic study examined responses of adult patients (n = 646) with SAD and/or Pd-Ag on eight symptom domains based on a previous factor analysis of a commonly used separation anxiety measure, the ASA-27, as well as on the Anxiety Sensitivity Index. We also examined questionnaire items that

OBJECTIVE: Attachment theory suggests that anxious attachment styles are associated with risk to psychiatric disorder, especially anxiety disorders. Separation anxiety would appear to be a core form of anxiety that is associated with anxious attachment. Nevertheless, as yet no research has examined the relationship of attachment styles to adult separation anxiety disorder, a condition that has only recently been fully recognized.
METHOD: The Attachment Style Questionnaire was used to examine attachment styles among 83 consecutive anxiety clinic patients diagnosed with panic disorder with agor

The present study aimed to examine memories of early separation anxiety symptoms in a community sample of women at heightened risk to neurotic disorder. The chief finding was that subjects with a lifetime history of panic disorder-agoraphobia (PD-Ag) returned statistically higher scores on a retrospective measure of early separation anxiety compared to subjects with either generalized anxiety or other phobic disorders, a result which was not accounted for by differences in neuroticism or General Health Questionnaire scores. Although limited by its retrospective design and the problem of co-mor
