The Surgical Apgar Score Predicts Postoperative Complications in Elderly Patients After Surgery for Colorectal Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical Apgar score (SAS) has been validated as a risk assessment tool for postoperative complications. However, the utility of the SAS in elderly patients with colorectal cancer remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the utility of the SAS for predicting the severe complications in elderly patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 295 patients underwent radical surgery for colorectal cancer in elderly patients ≥75 years old. The SAS was calculated based on 3 intraoperative parameters: estimated blood loss (EBL), lowest mean arterial pressure,

Low Apgar score, neonatal encephalopathy and epidural analgesia during labour: a Swedish registry-based study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal intrapartum fever (MF) is associated with neonatal sequelae, and women in labour who receive epidural analgesia (EA) are more likely to develop hyperthermia. The aims of this study were to investigate if EA and/or a diagnosis of MF were associated to adverse neonatal outcomes at a population level. METHODS: Population-based register study with data from the Swedish Birth Register and the Swedish National Patient Register, including all nulliparae (n=294,329) with singleton pregnancies who gave birth at term in Sweden 1999-2008. Neonatal outcomes analysed were Apgar score

Prevalence and Associated Factors for Low Apgar Score in Central Sudan: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with low fifth-minute Apgar scores in central Sudan. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (enrolled 438 newborns) was conducted at Wad Medani Hospital, Sudan. A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic, obstetric, clinical, and neonatal data. Apgar scores were calculated. A multivariate analysis was performed. RESULTS: Thirty-five (8.0%) newborns had low fifth-minute Apgar scores. The multivariate analysis showed that low birth weight was the only factor associated with a low fifth-minute Apgar score (AOR = 17.61; 95% CI: 5.9

Apgar Score and Risk of Cerebral Palsy in Preterm Infants: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

A low Apgar score is associated with increased risk of cerebral palsy (CP) in term infants, while such association remains controversial in preterm neonates. The objective of this study was to assess association between 5-minute Apgar scores and CP in different subcategories of preterm birth based on gestational age. The Slovenian National Perinatal Information System was used to identify singleton children without congenital malformations live-born at 22 to 37 weeks of gestation between 2002 and 2010. Data were linked to the Slovenian Registry of Cerebral Palsy in children born between 2002 a

Factors affecting the Apgar score of offsprings born to mothers suffering from systemic lupus erythematosus.

To reveal which disease activity parameters affect low Apgar scores of newborns, which is considered as a predictive parameter for neurological development. We examined retrospectively the data from 42 newborns who were delivered from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) mothers from 2006 to 2019. We evaluated whether the disease activity parameters, such as the achievement ratio of lupus low disease activity state (LLDAS), SLE disease activities index (SLEDAI), complement level, titer of anti-double stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody, therapeutic agents were related with low Apgar scores of newb

Adapting the Surgical Apgar Score for Perioperative Outcome Prediction in Liver Transplantation: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: The surgical Apgar score (SAS) is a 10-point scale using the lowest heart rate, lowest mean arterial pressure, and estimated blood loss (EBL) during surgery to predict postoperative outcomes. The SAS has not yet been validated in liver transplantation patients, because typical blood loss usually exceeds the highest EBL category. Our primary aim was to develop a modified SAS for liver transplant (SAS-LT) by replacing the EBL parameter with volume of red cells transfused. We hypothesized that the SAS-LT would predict death or severe complication within 30 days of transplant with simi

Apgar score and the risk of cause-specific infant mortality: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The Apgar score has been used worldwide as an index of early neonatal condition for more than 60 years. With advances in health-care service provision, neonatal resuscitation, and infant care, its present relevance is unclear. The aim of the study was to establish the strength of the relation between Apgar score at 5 min and the risk of neonatal and infant mortality, subdivided by specific causes. METHODS: We linked routine discharge and mortality data for all births in Scotland, UK between 1992 and 2010. We restricted our analyses to singleton livebirths, in women aged over 10 ye

Discriminant Analysis of Main Prognostic Factors Associated with Hemodynamically Significant PDA: Apgar Score, Silverman-Anderson Score, and NT-Pro-BNP Level.

Hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) in premature newborns is associated with a risk of PDA-related morbidities. Classification into risk groups may have a clinical utility in cases of suspected hsPDA to decrease the need for echocardiograms and unnecessary treatment. This prospective observational study included 99 premature newborns with extremely low body weight, who had an echocardiogram performed within the first three days of life. Discriminant analysis was utilized to find the best combination of prognostic factors for evaluation of hsPDA. We used binary logistic

Correlation of the Apgar Score with Dental Caries in 3- to 5-year-old Iranian Children.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a serious health condition in children. Poor diet, poor oral hygiene, and unique anatomy of the primary teeth can all contribute to the development of caries in primary teeth. Developmental structural defects in teeth during the fetal period and the first year after birth are believed to increase caries susceptibility. This study aimed to assess the correlation of the Apgar score with dental caries in 3- to 5-year-old Iranian children. METHODS: This retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Pediatric Dental Clinic of Tehran Dental Scho

Association of Apgar score at 5 minutes with academic performance and intelligence in youth: A cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The Apgar score is routinely given at childbirth worldwide. A low Apgar score at 5 minutes is a strong predictor for neonatal death. Scores below 7 have been associated with higher risks of later neurologic disability. Few studies have assessed the association between Apgar score and school performance and intelligence. The existing literature points towards a possible association between Apgar score and later cognitive function, but the contradictions call for further investigation to fully understand the potential association. This study aimed to examine the possible associatio

A Preliminary Study on the Safety of Elastography during Pregnancy: Hypoacusia, Anthropometry, and Apgar Score in Newborns.

Transient or acoustic radiation force elastography (ARFE) is becoming the most extended technology to assess cervical effacement, additionally to the Bishop test and conventional ultrasound. However, a debate on the fetal safety has been opened due to the high intensity focused beam emitted to produce shear waves. This work is aimed at providing preliminary data to assess clinical effects of fetal exposure. A follow-up study in newborns of 42 women exposed to ARFE during pregnancy was carried out to explore neonatal hypoacusia, Apgar test, and anthropometry. No hypoacusia cases attributable to

The New APGAR SCORE: A Checklist to Enhance Quality of Life in Geriatric Patients with Hip Fracture.

For geriatric patients with hip fractures, the broken bone is the reason for admission, but only part of the overall disease. Indeed, it may be more helpful to consider the patient having geriatric hip fracture syndrome or sustaining a hip attack, as there are many associated medical, social, psychological, and other problems to which attention must be paid. To that end, we have identified a series of 10 steps, collected into a checklist, that can be undertaken for all patients with geriatric hip fracture. In homage to the maxim "we come into the world under the brim of the pelvis and go out t
