Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Apraxia of Speech and Cortical Activation in Patients With Stroke: A Randomized Sham-Controlled Study.

Purpose The study aims to investigate, using anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (A-tDCS), over which site, the left lip region of primary motor cortex (M1) or the Broca's area, there would be better recovery from apraxia of speech (AoS) in patients with poststroke aphasia and to examine for altered activation in speech-related areas after tDCS with nonlinear electroencephalography (EEG). Method Fifty-two patients with AoS were randomized into A-tDCS over the left M1 (A-tDCS-M1), Broca's area, and sham tDCS groups who underwent 10 sessions of tDCS and speech treatment for 5 days. Th

Prosodic disturbance in aphasia: vowel length in Thai.

The aim of this study is to determine to what extent a phonologically contrastive function of the prosodic feature of length is resistant to impairment in aphasia. The language chosen for investigation is Thai, a language which contrasts short and long vowels. Subjects included two Broca aphasics, one transcortical motor aphasic, one Wernicke aphasic, one conduction aphasic, one nonaphasic right-brain-damaged patient, one nonaphasic cerebellar dysarthric patient, and five normal controls. The subjects read a list of words containing short and long vowels. Vowel durations were measured from spe

Alexia and agraphia in Spanish.

BACKGROUND: Every language has certain specific idiosyncrasies in its writing system. Cross-linguistic analyses of alexias and agraphias are fundamental to understand commonalities and differences in the brain organization of written language. Few reports of alexias and agraphias in the Spanish language are currently available. AIMS: To analyse the clinical manifestations of alexias and agraphias in Spanish, and the effect of demographic variables. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Spanish versions of the Western Aphasia Battery (WAB) and Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE) were used for langua

Recurring utterances induced by local anesthetic administration to the left frontal lobe.

Recurring utterances (RUs) are a distinct language symptom observed in severe aphasia, known to be associated with global or Broca's aphasia, though their neural basis remains unclear. We present a case of RU induced by selective left frontal suppression using a novel technique named the super-selective Wada test (ssWada), which involves temporary anesthetization of specific brain regions through super-selective catheterization of cerebral arteries. This method allows for precise simulation of localized brain dysfunction. We applied this technique on a 49-year-old right-handed man with drug-re

Speech entrainment compensates for Broca's area damage.

Speech entrainment (SE), the online mimicking of an audiovisual speech model, has been shown to increase speech fluency in patients with Broca's aphasia. However, not all individuals with aphasia benefit from SE. The purpose of this study was to identify patterns of cortical damage that predict a positive response SE's fluency-inducing effects. Forty-four chronic patients with left hemisphere stroke (15 female) were included in this study. Participants completed two tasks: 1) spontaneous speech production, and 2) audiovisual SE. Number of different words per minute was calculated as a speech o

Script Training Using Telepractice with Two Adults with Chronic Non-Fluent Aphasia.

Two male participants with chronic (> 2 years), non-fluent aphasia and their family members participated in script training using videoconferencing. Functional scripts were developed by people with aphasia (PWA) and their family members. Accuracy of scripts was measured by total target words produced per turn. Participant 1 with Broca's aphasia produced scripts with 0% accuracy pre-treatment and 87.5% accuracy post-treatment. Participant 2 with Transcortical Motor aphasia produced scripts with 20.2% accuracy pre-treatment and 63.5% accuracy post-treatment. Pre- and post-questionnaires for comm

Errors resembling semantic paralexias in Spanish-speaking aphasics.

Forty-one Spanish-speaking left-hemisphere-damaged patients were selected and divided into seven groups (transcortical, Broca's aphasia, conduction aphasia, Wernicke's aphasia, anomic aphasia, alexia without agraphia, and global aphasia). A reading battery composed of eight different subtests was given to each patient (reading of letters, reading of syllables, reading of pseudowords, reading of words, reading of sentences, understanding commands, reading and comprehension of texts, and logographic reading). Different types of reading errors were analyzed. Only in the logographic reading subtes

Isotope localization of infarcts in aphasia.

Radionucleide localization of infarcts producing aphasia was undertaken in 65 patients with a scan-test and onset-test interval of one months or less. The scans were traced on anatomical templates without knowledge of the aphasias. A phasics were classified by their test scores according to taxonomic criteria, independently from localization. Scans belonging to each clinically distinct group were overlapped "blindly". The results showed distinct areas for Broca's conduction and Wernicke's aphasics along the parasylvian axis of the lateral templates. Lesions of global aphasics covered all these

The Efficacy of Structural Priming in the Production of Sentences with Prepositions in Persian Patients with Poststroke Aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: Problems with the production of sentences with prepositions are one of the most common language problems in people with aphasia (PWA). Structural priming (SP) is one of the theory-based therapeutic approaches to improve these deficits. Although several studies have been conducted on the sentence construction problems of PWA, there is no study on the SP protocol for the production of sentences with Persian prepositions. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of SP in the production of these sentences among Persian-speaking PWA. METHODS: This study, with a single-subjec

Clinical Characterization of Atypical Primary Progressive Aphasia in a 3-Year Longitudinal Study: A Case Report.

The logopenic variant of primary progressive aphasia (lvPPA) is the most recent variant of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) to be identified; thus far, it has been poorly investigated. Despite being typically associated with Alzheimer disease (AD), lvPPA has recently been linked to frontotemporal lobe degeneration (FTLD), with distinctive cognitive and neural features that are worthy of further investigation. Here, we describe the neuropsychological and linguistic profile, as well as cerebral abnormalities, of an individual exhibiting PPA and carrying a pathogenetic variant in the GRN gene, f

Aphasia, apraxia and neurogenic stuttering as complications of metrizamide myelography (speech deficits following myelography).

Aphasia following metrizamide myelography has been reported infrequently. During a seven-month period, we examined two patients who developed Broca's aphasia, apraxia of speech, oral-buccal-facial apraxia and neurogenic stuttering after intrathecal metrizamide administration. In each case, focal neurologic deficits were accompanied by clinical, electroencephalographic and radiologic signs of generalized neurologic disease. Serial speech and language evaluations initially revealed severe deficits that were largely resolved by the third day post-myelography. Out-patient follow-up examinations de

Buccofacial apraxia in primary progressive aphasia.

Buccofacial apraxia (BFA) is associated with nonfluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) as well as with the severity of apraxia of speech (AOS), a core symptom of nfvPPA. However, an association with agrammatism has not been established. The aim of this study was to examine the association between BFA and agrammatism in nfvPPA and to determine differences in atrophic regions in primary progressive aphasia (PPA) with and without BFA. Seventy-four patients with PPA were recruited, including 34, 15, 10, and 15 patients with nfvPPA, semantic variant PPA, logopenic variant PP

Relating selective brain damage to impairments with voicing contrasts.

Research is reviewed concerning the performance of several neurological groups on the perception and production of voicing contrasts in speech. Patients with cerebellar damage, Parkinson's disease, specific language impairment, Broca's aphasia, apraxia, and Wernicke's aphasia have been reported to be impaired in the perception and articulation of voicing. The types of deficits manifested by these neurologically impaired groups in creating and discriminating voicing contrasts are discussed and the respective contributions of separate neural areas are identified. A model is presented specifying

Clinical dimensions along the non-fluent variant primary progressive aphasia spectrum.

It is debated whether primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) and progressive agrammatic aphasia (PAA) belong to the same clinical spectrum, traditionally termed non-fluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA), or exist as two completely distinct syndromic entities with specific pathologic/prognostic correlates. We analysed speech, language and disease severity features in a comprehensive cohort of patients with progressive motor speech impairment and/or agrammatism to ascertain evidence of naturally occurring, clinically meaningful non-overlapping syndromic entities (
