Appetitive characteristics in children with cystic fibrosis: Questionnaire validation and associations with nutritional status.

BACKGROUND: Appetitive characteristics are an important factor in the nutritional status of children with cystic fibrosis (CF). We administered a brief parent-report eating behavior questionnaire, validated in healthy children, to determine the relationship between appetitive characteristics and body weight in children with CF. METHODS: Parents of children attending the Johns Hopkins Pediatric CF Clinic completed the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at a routine clinic visit. Responses were correlated with anthropometric and other clinical data. RESULTS: Parents of 64 children with

Repeated administration of estradiol promotes mechanisms of sexual excitation and inhibition: Glutamate signaling in the ventromedial hypothalamus attenuates excitation.

Repeated administration of 10 μg of estradiol benzoate (EB) every 4 days to the ovariectomized (OVX) rat induces a behavioral sensitization of sexual behaviors. Repeated copulation or the receipt of vaginocervical stimulation (VCS) attenuates the sensitization of appetitive sexual behaviors, suggesting that VCS acts in opposition to the mechanisms that induce the sensitization. It is known that VCS accelerates the onset of estrous termination (characterized by a decrease in appetitive sexual behaviors, and an increase in defensive behaviors prior to the decline in lordosis), and glutamate tran

Leptin signaling in the medial nucleus tractus solitarius reduces food seeking and willingness to work for food.

The adipose-derived hormone leptin signals in the medial nucleus tractus solitarius (mNTS) to suppress food intake, in part, by amplifying within-meal gastrointestinal (GI) satiation signals. Here we show that mNTS leptin receptor (LepRb) signaling also reduces appetitive and motivational aspects of feeding, and that these effects can depend on energy status. Using the lowest dose that significantly suppressed 3-h cumulative food intake, unilateral leptin (0.3 μg) administration to the mNTS (3 h before testing) reduced operant lever pressing for sucrose under increasing work demands (progressi

Effects of amphetamine, dexfenfluramine, diazepam, and other pharmacological and dietary manipulations on food "seeking" and "taking" behavior in non-human primates.

RATIONALE: Feeding consists of appetitive or foraging behavior followed by consummatory behavior. OBJECTIVES: To determine if pharmacological manipulations can differentially affect appetitive and consummatory aspects of food intake, and to compare these results to those obtained using naturalistic dietary manipulations. METHODS: Responding of baboons was studied using a schedule of reinforcement that simulated food "seeking" and food "taking." Responding during the seeking component was reinforced by stimuli paired with food, while responding during the taking component was reinforced with

Long-lasting sensitization of reward-directed behavior by amphetamine.

Exposure to psychostimulant drugs of abuse such as amphetamine can result in long-lasting "sensitization" of reward-directed behavior, such that subjects display enhancements in behavior directed by and toward rewards and reward-predictive cues (i.e. "incentive sensitization"). The purpose of these experiments was to determine the degree to which such sensitization resulting from chronic amphetamine exposure influences both appetitive and consummatory food-motivated behavior. Adult male Long-Evans rats received daily i.p. injections of D-amphetamine (2.0 mg/kg) or saline vehicle for five conse

Molecular pattern of a decrease in the rewarding effect of cocaine after an escalating-dose drug regimen.

BACKGROUND: Long-term cocaine exposure leads to dysregulation of the reward system and initiates processes that ultimately weaken its rewarding effects. Here, we studied the influence of an escalating-dose cocaine regimen on drug-associated appetitive behavior after a withdrawal period, along with corresponding molecular changes in plasma and the prefrontal cortex (PFC). METHODS: We applied a 5 day escalating-dose cocaine regimen in rats. We assessed anxiety-like behavior at the beginning of the withdrawal period in the elevated plus maze (EPM) test. The reinforcement properties of cocaine we

Attenuating GABA(A) receptor signaling in dopamine neurons selectively enhances reward learning and alters risk preference in mice.

Phasic dopamine (DA) transmission encodes the value of reward-predictive stimuli and influences both learning and decision-making. Altered DA signaling is associated with psychiatric conditions characterized by risky choices such as pathological gambling. These observations highlight the importance of understanding how DA neuron activity is modulated. While excitatory drive onto DA neurons is critical for generating phasic DA responses, emerging evidence suggests that inhibitory signaling also modulates these responses. To address the functional importance of inhibitory signaling in DA neurons

Persistent appetitive memory in problematic pornography users.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Most men consume pornography, with a small but significant percentage losing control over their use. Since ICD-11, problematic pornography use can be diagnosed as "compulsive sexual behavior disorder." Debate persists on whether problematic pornography use is an impulse-control disorder or a behavioral addiction. Mechanisms of learning and memory play a central role in addictive disorders but are presumably less relevant for impulse control disorders. METHODS: One hundred thirty-nine heterosexual male users of pornography and gaming participated in our study which was par

RFamide-related Peptide-3 and the Trade-off between Reproductive and Ingestive Behavior.

Ingestive and sex behaviors are important for individual survival and reproductive success, but when environmental energy availability is limited, individuals of many different species make a trade-off, forfeiting sex for ingestive behavior. For example, food-deprived female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) forego vaginal scent marking and lordosis (sex behaviors) in favor of foraging, hoarding, and eating food (ingestive behavior). Reproductive processes tend to be energetically costly, and individual survival requires homeostasis in metabolic energy. Thus, during energetic challenges,

The hypothalamic neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone acts in the nucleus accumbens to modulate feeding behavior and forced-swim performance.

Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a hypothalamic neuropeptide with a prominent role in feeding and energy homeostasis. The rodent MCH receptor (MCH1R) is highly expressed in the nucleus accumbens shell (AcSh), a region that is important in the regulation of appetitive behavior. Here we establish a role for MCH and MCH1R in mediating a hypothalamic-limbic circuit that regulates feeding and related behaviors. Direct delivery of an MCH1R receptor antagonist to the AcSh blocked feeding and produced an antidepressant-like effect in the forced swim test, whereas intra-AcSh injection of MCH had

Altered reversal and extinction learning in the DMSXL mouse model of type I myotonic dystrophy (DM1): An exploratory study.

BackgroundCognitive changes in type 1 myotonic dystrophy (DM1) have a pronounced negative effect on quality of life measures. Despite this, the neural basis of these changes is poorly understood. DM1 patients demonstrate deficits in motivation and cognitive flexibility, reflective of apathy and obsessive-compulsive / autistic-like traits.ObjectiveThese traits can be readily assessed using reversal learning and appetitive extinction tasks. Reversal learning assesses the ability to learn following a change in a rule and can evaluate cognitive flexibility and habitual responding, while appetitive

IMPACT OF REAL-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES ON REPRODUCTION: Rodent reproductive behavior among males and females after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

IN BRIEF: The rodent reproductive behavioral control column of the hypothalamus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are critical systems that regulate copulatory behaviors in both males and females. We review how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), specifically phthalates, bisphenol A, and chemical mixtures, dysregulate appetitive and consummatory copulatory behaviors and their neuroendocrine substrates, using mouse and rodent models. ABSTRACT: Sexual reproduction - from both physiological and behavioral perspectives - is dependent upon appropriate connections between a diver

Administration of neuropeptide Y into the rat nucleus accumbens shell, but not core, attenuates the motivational impairment from systemic dopamine receptor antagonism by α-flupenthixol.

Previous research has demonstrated that dopamine and Neuropeptide Y (NPY) promote motivated behavior, and there is evidence to suggest that they interact within neural circuitry involved in motivation. NPY and dopamine both modulate appetitive motivation towards food through direct actions in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), although how they interact in this region to promote motivation is presently unclear. In this study, we sought to further elucidate the relationship between NAc NPY and dopamine and their effects on motivated behavior. Specifically, we examined whether NAc injections of NPY mi

Metoprine, a histamine N-methyltransferase inhibitor, attenuates methamphetamine-induced hyperlocomotion via activation of histaminergic neurotransmission in mice.

Metoprine increases the content of histamine in brain by inhibiting histamine N-methyltransferase (HMT), a centrally acting histamine degrading enzyme. We present data demonstrating that pretreatment with metoprine attenuates the hyperlocomotive effects of METH in mice using a multi-configuration behavior apparatus designed to monitor four behavioral outcomes [horizontal locomotion, appetitive behavior (food access), and food and water intake]. Metoprine pretreatment itself induced hyperlocomotion in mice challenged with saline during the large part of light phase. The trend was also observed

Behavioral sensitization following exposure to low doses of trimethylolpropane phosphate.

Behavioral sensitization is commonly studied within the context of drugs known to directly increase activity in the brain's dopamine system, particularly drugs of abuse. However, the present research suggests such behavioral changes can also be observed following exposure to other compounds that indirectly affect the dopamine system. One such compound is trimethylolpropane phosphate (TMPP), a bridged organophosphate that can be produced by the partial pyrolysis of certain synthetic lubricants used on military ships and aircraft. Although TMPP is a potent convulsant, it has been demonstrated th

Changes in appetitive traits and binge-eating following lifestyle intervention in 7-14-year-olds: a 3-year follow-up.

Lifestyle interventions tend to reduce disordered eating short-term in children, but little is known about long-term changes. This study aimed to investigate changes in appetitive traits and episodes of overeating and binge-eating up to three years after a 10-week multicomponent lifestyle camp in 7-14-year-olds. Participants were referred to the lifestyle camp due to overweight/obesity, and/or psychosocial challenges. The Children's Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) and selected items from the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) were completed at baseline, after camp, and at o

Amylin in Alcohol Addiction: A Potential New Treatment Target or an Adjuvant to Other Treatments?

Amylin is a neuroendocrine hormone with a potential role in addictive disorders, including alcohol use disorder (AUD). In addition to reducing appetitive behavior, amylin has been shown to affect alcohol-related behaviors in rodents. Delineating the biobehavioral correlates of amylin in relation to alcohol seeking and consumption has the potential of identifying new treatment targets for AUD, yet additional translational and human research is needed.

Sexual desire for non-normative sexual behaviors: differences between centennials and millennials considering sexual orientation.

INTRODUCTION: Non-normative sexual behaviors were traditionally studied from a psychopathological perspective, although nowadays a distinction is made between paraphilia (nonpathological) and paraphilic disorder (mental disorder). METHODS: The present study aims to examine the differences between a group of millennials (n = 173) and centennials (n = 159) in their appetite for these sexual behaviors without the preconception of these behaviors as harmful or pathological. RESULTS: Differences in appetite related to exhibitionism and foot fetishism were found in the first instance, with millenn
