Aquatic Exercise Enhances Functional Movement and Sensorimotor Performance in Athletes With Chronic Ankle Instability: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is prevalent among athletes and is associated with impaired sensorimotor function, reduced dynamic stability, and limited functional movement, increasing the risk of reinjury. Aquatic exercise offers a low-impact alternative to land-based rehabilitation by reducing joint loading and promoting neuromuscular adaptations. This study evaluated the effectiveness of an 8-week aquatic exercise program on functional outcomes in athletes with CAI. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial with preintervention and postintervention assessments. METHODS: Forty male ath

Hydrotherapy for Overweight and Obesity: A Systematic Review of Anthropometric and Lipid Outcomes.

Overweight and obesity are chronic metabolic conditions associated with excess adiposity, impaired physical function, dyslipidemia, and increased cardiometabolic risk. Among hydrotherapy-based modalities, structured aquatic exercise may provide a low-impact exercise option by reducing weight-bearing joint loading, providing water resistance, and facilitating exercise participation, whereas passive hydrothermal interventions and hydrogen-rich water involve different therapeutic mechanisms. This systematic review evaluated the effects of hydrotherapy-based and water-based interventions on anthro

Protection against Mycobacterium ulcerans lesion development by exposure to aquatic insect saliva.

BACKGROUND: Buruli ulcer is a severe human skin disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans. This disease is primarily diagnosed in West Africa with increasing incidence. Antimycobacterial drug therapy is relatively effective during the preulcerative stage of the disease, but surgical excision of lesions with skin grafting is often the ultimate treatment. The mode of transmission of this Mycobacterium species remains a matter of debate, and relevant interventions to prevent this disease lack (i) the proper understanding of the M. ulcerans life history traits in its natural aquatic ecosystem and (

Study on the effect of aquatic exercise combined with hot spring bathing for patients with chronic low back pain: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common musculoskeletal symptom associated with spinal disorders, impairing quality of life while imposing significant medical and socioeconomic burdens. Traditional land-based rehabilitation training is often limited by pain, whereas aquatic exercise utilizes water’s buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, and viscosity to reduce spinal loading and provide a stable environment. Hot spring bathing employs thermal stimulation to dilate local blood vessels, enhance blood circulation in muscles and soft tissues, and alleviate muscle spasms and pain sensitivity

Your friendly neighborhood spider bite - Or not: A fishy case of Mycobacterium marinum.

Mycobacterium marinum is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium, most commonly causing cutaneous infection after prolonged or repeated exposure to contaminated aquatic environments. Diagnosis is frequently delayed because of its indolent course, nonspecific clinical features, and frequent misattribution to more common dermatologic conditions. We report the case of a 51-year-old immunocompromised woman who developed a progressive ulcerative lesion on the right wrist after a presumed spider bite following a farm visit. Despite multiple emergency department encounters and empiric antibacteri

Comparative effectiveness of traditional vs. emerging rehabilitation exercises in enhancing daily living activities and lower extremity function among stroke survivors: A network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Post-stroke lower limb motor dysfunction significantly impairs activities of daily living (ADL). The present study provides a comparative analysis of various exercise interventions to determine their relative effectiveness in improving lower extremity function and ADL post-stroke. METHODS: We systematically searched six databases for randomized controlled trials published from database inception through December 2024. After quality assessment, a network meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate comparative efficacy, with intervention hierarchies ranked using the surface

Approved consensus-driven epidemiological cutoff values for standard broth microdilution antimicrobial susceptibility testing of aquatic Vibrio harveyi isolates.

Judicious use of antimicrobials in aquaculture requires reliable antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of bacterial pathogens for resistance surveillance and for advising therapy decisions. To improve AST of aquatic bacterial pathogens such as Vibrio harveyi, the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) has standardized methods specific to testing isolates collected from fish and other aquatic animals. However, no criteria, called epidemiological cutoff values (ECVs), exist yet to interpret results when testing V. harveyi with these standard methods. Microbiologists use ECVs to

Effects of a low, medium, and high-intensity aquatic physiotherapy protocol on functional and biochemical parameters in individuals with knee osteoarthritis: protocol for a crossover randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis affects the performance of daily activities, independence, and quality of life. The etiopathogenesis of this condition considers the mechanisms of activation of metalloproteinase and reactive oxygen species production pathways. Metalloproteinases-3 (MMP-3) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) may be responsible for cartilage destruction. Aquatic physiotherapy promotes a positive impact on the clinical picture of osteoarthritis, and this study presents an intervention protocol that aims to evaluate the effects of a single session of different aquatic physiotherapy mo

Exercise interventions for knee osteoarthritis: A narrative review of mechanisms, modalities, and clinical implementation.

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, multifactorial joint disorder involving cartilage degeneration, subchondral bone changes, synovial inflammation, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Exercise is first-line therapy, yet heterogeneity in modalities, dosing, and delivery limits practical guidance. A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Frontiers, and ScienceDirect (2021-2026), focusing on aerobic, resistance, aquatic, and mind-body exercise studies. Data were extracted on type, intensity, frequency, duration, delivery, and outcomes, and synthesized narratively to p

When the Usual Becomes Unusual: A Closer Look at Mycobacterium marinum Infections.

Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum) is a slow-growing bacterium predominantly found in aquatic environments. While not highly virulent, it can cause skin and soft tissue infections, often misdiagnosed due to their indolent progression. This paper presents the case of a 42-year-old male data analyst with a chronic, ulcerated lesion on his right middle finger resulting from a minor fish tank injury. Despite multiple interventions, the lesion resisted healing for 10 months. A detailed history raised the suspicion of atypical mycobacterial infection. Despite non-diagnostic initial evaluations, comb
