Two new species of Icaleptes (Opiliones: Laniatores: Icaleptidae) from Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.

The genus Icaleptes was proposed by Kury & Pérez-González in 2002 to accommodate a single Colombian species, Icaleptes malkini, collected in the southeastern slope of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Cesar Department. In this study, we describe two new species for this previously monotypic genus collected on the northwestern slope of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in the department of Magdalena. The new species Icaleptes dimorphicus sp. nov. and Icaleptes armasi sp. nov. were included within Icaleptes based on external and genital similarities such as male scutum magnum continuously convex and

Pore-Forming Proteins from Cnidarians and Arachnids as Potential Biotechnological Tools.

Animal venoms are complex mixtures of highly specialized toxic molecules. Cnidarians and arachnids produce pore-forming proteins (PFPs) directed against the plasma membrane of their target cells. Among PFPs from cnidarians, actinoporins stand out for their small size and molecular simplicity. While native actinoporins require only sphingomyelin for membrane binding, engineered chimeras containing a recognition antibody-derived domain fused to an actinoporin isoform can nonetheless serve as highly specific immunotoxins. Examples of such constructs targeted against malignant cells have been alre

Parasites of wombats (family Vombatidae), with a focus on ticks and tick-borne pathogens.

Ticks (Arachnida: Acari) are vectors for pathogens and the biggest threat to animal health. Many Australian ticks are associated with pathogens that impact humans, domestic animals and livestock. However, little is known about the presence or impact of tick-borne pathogens in native Australian wildlife. Wombats are particularly susceptible to the effects of the ectoparasite Sarcoptes scabiei which causes sarcoptic mange, the reason for which is unknown. Factors such as other ectoparasites and their associated pathogens may play a role. A critical understanding of the species of ectoparasites t

Induction and suppression of tick cell antiviral RNAi responses by tick-borne flaviviruses.

Arboviruses are transmitted by distantly related arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes (class Insecta) and ticks (class Arachnida). RNA interference (RNAi) is the major antiviral mechanism in arthropods against arboviruses. Unlike in mosquitoes, tick antiviral RNAi is not understood, although this information is important to compare arbovirus/host interactions in different classes of arbovirus vectos. Using an Ixodes scapularis-derived cell line, key Argonaute proteins involved in RNAi and the response against tick-borne Langat virus (Flaviviridae) replication were identified and phylogenetic r

Arthropods in dermatology.

Arthropods are important in medicine for a multitude of reasons. Their bites and stings may induce allergic reactions, ranging from annoying to life-threatening. Many arthropod products are also capable of inciting allergic responses in sensitized persons. In recent years, bites and stings have gained greater attention owing to increased concern about disease transmission. A common hypersensitivity response to arthropod bites, stings, and products is papular urticaria. This eruption occurs primarily in children, who eventually "outgrow" this disease, probably through desensitization after mult

Diversity of intestinal protozoa and clinical signs associated in wild-caught Phoneutria nigriventer kept in captivity for the anti-arachnid serum production.

The phylum Arthropoda comprises approximately 85% of all described animal species. The class Arachnida includes some invertebrates of great importance as they are either involved in the transmission of diseases or poses a risk of human envenomation. Spiders belonging to the genus Phoneutria sp., are the arachnids exhibiting medical importance. These animals were quarantined and maintained in captivity at the Biotério de Artrópodes of the Instituto Butantan, São Paulo, Brazil, for the production of the anti-arachnid serum. A total 509 feces samples from different Phoneutria nigriventer were ana

Novel technique for quantifying adhesion of Metarhizium anisopliae conidia to the tick cuticle.

The present study describes an accurate quantitative method for quantifying the adherence of conidia to the arthropod cuticle and the dynamics of conidial germination on the host. The method was developed using conidia of Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokin (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) and engorged Rhipicephalus annulatus (Say) (Arachnida: Ixodidae) females and was also verified for M. anisopliae var. acridum Driver et Milner (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) and Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) larvae. This novel method is based on using an orga

Trans-toxin ion-sensitivity of charybdotoxin-blocked potassium-channels reveals unbinding transitional states.

In silico and in vitro studies have made progress in understanding protein-protein complex formation; however, the molecular mechanisms for their dissociation are unclear. Protein-protein complexes, lasting from microseconds to years, often involve induced-fit, challenging computational or kinetic analysis. Charybdotoxin (CTX), a peptide from the Leiurus scorpion venom, blocks voltage-gated K+-channels in a unique example of binding/unbinding simplicity. CTX plugs the external mouth of K+-channels pore, stopping K+-ion conduction, without inducing conformational changes. Conflicting with a tig

Transcriptomic Analysis of Pseudoscorpion Venom Reveals a Unique Cocktail Dominated by Enzymes and Protease Inhibitors.

Transcriptomic and genomic analyses have illuminated the diversity of venoms in three of the four venomous arachnid orders (scorpions, spiders, and ticks). To date, no venom gland transcriptome analysis has been available for pseudoscorpions, the fourth venomous arachnid lineage. To redress this gap, we sequenced an mRNA library generated from the venom glands of the species Synsphyronus apimelus (Garypidae). High-throughput sequencing by the Illumina protocol, followed by de novo assembly, resulted in a total of 238,331 transcripts. From those, we annotated 131 transcripts, which code for put

Reproductive morphology of three species of neotropical harvestmen (Opiliones, Laniatores, Gonyleptoidea).

Illustrations of penis morphology are essential components of species descriptions for harvestmen belonging to the suborder Laniatores. Male genitalia are important sources of taxonomic characters and are generally assumed to exhibit relatively little intraspecific variation. In contrast, descriptions of female reproductive morphology are rarely included in taxonomic descriptions of laniatorean harvestmen. As a result, relatively little is known about variation in the external features of the ovipositor. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to examine variation in male and femal

Disentangling the South American "Ceratomontia": new genus, new combinations, and new species (Opiliones: Laniatores: Triaenonychidae).

Previous phylogenetic studies using morphological or molecular characters failed to recover the transcontinental triaenonychid genus Ceratomontia Roewer, 1915, as monophyletic, and pointed out the necessity to erect a new genus for the new world representatives. In this work we address this taxonomic claim and the genus Maurymontia gen. nov. is described to include the South American species. In addition to the proposed new combinations, we also provide a detailed redescription and illustrations for all the previously known species: Maurymontia argentina (Canals, 1939) comb. nov., Maurymontia

Three new species of Paecilaemella (Cosmetidae: Flirteinae) from the upper Amazonian Basin.

The recent revalidation of Paecilaemella Roewer, 1925 as a valid genus, along with the inclusion of Gonyleptes multimaculatus Wood, 1869, and Protus ornatus Roewer, 1912, in this previously monotypic genus, and its placement in the subfamily Flirteinae, represent significant advances in our understanding of this cosmetid genus and its subfamily. In this study, we further expand our knowledge by describing three new species of Paecilaemella from the Colombian (Paecilaemella andi sp. nov.) and Ecuadorian Amazon forest (Paecilaemella armasi sp. nov. and Paecilaemella geminorum sp. nov.). Two new species of Goniosomatinae (Opiliones: Gonyleptidae) narrowly endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil.

In the present work, two new species are described for the subfamily Goniosomatinae. Goniosoma bragagnolo sp. nov. is described from the seasonal semideciduous forests of Minas Gerais state and is distinguished from other species in the genus by a unique combination of features: a pair of small tubercles on the ocularium and on area III of the dorsal scutum, a complex dry mark on the dorsal scutum and the presence of a ventral process with a flabellum on the penis. Serracutisoma hara sp. nov. inhabits a cave in dense ombrophilous forests in Santa Catarina state and is considered to be part of

First Harvestman Record for the Juan Fernández Archipelago, Chile, with Morphological Notes on Acropsopilio chilensis (Opiliones: Caddidae: Acroposopilioninae).

Acropsopilio chilensis Silvestri, 1904 (Eupnoi: Caddidae: Acropsopilioninae), is recorded for Robinson Crusoe Island, Chile. This is the first harvestman species recorded for the Juan Fernández Archipelago and also the first extra-continental record for this species. During the comparison with continental co-specific specimens, some previously unknown, remarkable morphological characteristics were discovered, among them: the absence of ovipositor seminal receptacles and tracheal system, small and probably imperforate spiracles and the presence of a subdistal spiny structure, maybe a stylus, in

Seasonality of brown recluse spiders, Loxosceles reclusa, submitted by the general public: implications for physicians regarding loxoscelism diagnoses.

Many medically important animals exhibit fluctuating seasonal abundance such that risk from envenomation or disease is not constant throughout the year. As indicated by homeowner submissions, brown recluse spiders, Loxosceles reclusa, show seasonal peaks of activity during summer and paucity in winter. This information should be incorporated as part of the diagnostic algorithm for physicians when considering the probability of loxoscelism in endemic Loxosceles areas especially if a skin lesion occurs when spiders are scarce.

The occurrence of parasitic arthropods in two groups of European bison in the Białowieza primeval forest.

Within 1992-2000, a total of 181 Białowieza Forest bison were examined from two winter herds. Twelf parasitic arthropod species were observed, a high infestation being typical of Demodex bisonianius, Chorioptes bovis, Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus, and Bisonicola sedecimdecembrii. The infestation in section 422 herd being higher for B. sedecimdecembrii, I. ricinus, D. reticulatus, Ch. bovis. D. bisonianus was slightly more prevalent in the section 391 herd, the intensity being, however, lower than that in the other herd. Among the remaining arthropods found in the Bialowieza Forest E

New Data on Latrodectus tredecimguttatus Rossi, 1790, the Medically Important Spider Species (Araneae: Theridiidae) from Iran.

Spiders are one of the most important orders of Arachnida comprising more than 48,000 species in the world. Except for families Uloboridae and Holarchaeidae, all others are classified as the venomous spider. However, only about 200 species are medically relevant and cause public health problems or even death. In Iran, there are 51 families and 763 species of spiders, of which the families, Theridiidae and Sicariidae are dangerous for the human being, and the first one is more prevalent. The Latrodectus is considered one of the most poisonous spiders in the world and Iran. This genus has five s
