The dog mummy, the ticks and the louse fly: Archaeological report of severe ectoparasitosis in Ancient Egypt.

The authors report the first archaeological case of dog ectoparasitosis in Ancient Egypt. The study of a mummified young dog dated to the Roman period suggests a significant infestation by two blood sucking ectoparasites, respectively the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806 (Acari: Ixodidae), the louse fly Hippobosca longipennis Fabricius, 1805 (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) as well as puparia of sarcosaprophagous flies (Diptera: Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae), a potential source of myiasis. All of these species are known to be potential vectors of different pathogens which may

Characterization of pigments and ligands in a wall painting fragment from Liternum archaeological park (Italy).

Spectroscopic and MS techniques were used to characterize the pigments and the composition of polar and nonpolar binders of a stray wall painting fragment from Liternum (Italy) archaeological excavation. X-ray fluorescence and diffraction analysis of the decorations indicated mainly the presence of calcite, quartz, hematite, cinnabar, and cuprorivaite. Infrared spectroscopy, GC coupled to flame-ionization detector, and MS analysis of the polar and nonpolar components extracted from paint layers from three different color regions revealed the presence of free amino acids, sugars, and fatty acid

Forensic approach to an archaeological casework of "vampire" skeletal remains in Venice: odontological and anthropological prospectus.

During the years 2006-2007, the Archeological Superintendent of Veneto (Italy) promoted a research project on mass graves located on Nuovo Lazzaretto in Venice, where the corpses of plague deaths were buried during the 16th and 17th centuries. The burials were of different stages and are believed to be the remains of plague victims from the numerous outbreaks of pestilence, which occurred between the 15th and 17th centuries. Among the fragmented and commingled human bones, an unusual burial was found. The body was laid supine, with the top half of the thorax intact, arms parallel to the rachis

The effects of dental wear on third molar eruption and on the curve of Spee in human archaeological dentitions.

The abrasiveness of food is a key determinant in the rate of physiological attrition (dental wear) in humans. With increasing food processing through time, the rate of physiological dental wear in human teeth has decreased markedly. Many consider such wear to be beneficial to oral health and that insufficient wear may result in impaction of the third molars. If enhanced extraoral food processing provides an evolutionary advantage, then it is possible that agenesis of the redundant third molar may follow. One of the aims here was to examine impaction and agenesis of the third molars in four pop

Identification of childhood arthritis in archaeological material: juvenile rheumatoid arthritis versus juvenile spondyloarthropathy.

The opportunity to examine the defleshed skeleton of an individual diagnosed in life (Hamann-Todd collection, individual 2036) afforded a unique opportunity to demonstrate the bone damage characteristic of at least one form of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Characteristics helpful for recognition of JRA in archaeological material include peripheral articular marginal and subchondral erosions, axial (e.g., zygapophyseal or sacroiliac) joint erosions, fusion of axial (cervical zygapophyseal) and/or peripheral joints, premature epiphyseal closure and/or ballooned epiphyses, growth retardati

Palaeoproteomic investigation of archaeological sediments associated with ochre use in the Middle Stone Age of southern Africa.

The African Middle Stone Age (MSA) represents the cultural and technological context associated with the emergence of Homo sapiens and the development of complex cognition. In this setting, ochre use is considered a multifaceted proxy for modern behaviour, allowing inferences about technical and symbolic aspects of Homo sapiens. Powdered ochre is reported in multiple southern African ethnographic and archaeological contexts alongside various organic materials, some of which are protein-based. Yet, the recovery of proteinaceous residues is rare in the MSA. Since proteins can offer insights into

A Tool for Inferences about the Past: The Interactive Map of Indigenous Archaeological Sites of the State of São Paulo.

This article presents a comprehensive, publicly available database of Indigenous archaeology in the State of São Paulo in the form of an interactive map, comprising a period of time from the Late Pleistocene until the European arrival, based on lithic and ceramic materials, including sites both from the coastal area and in the interior of the state. This initiative enables us, for the first time, to understand the archaeological wealth and potential of the state which has the country's largest number of infrastructure projects, placing it at the highest risk for cultural heritage destruction.

Contribution to the debate on the origin of autoimmune joint diseases in Europe through an archaeological case of still's disease.

The objective of this study is twofold: (i) to evaluate the bony changes of an early medieval skeleton (UF2) from Barcelona, which presents lesions suggestive of Still's disease and (ii) to contribute to the debate concerning the existence of autoimmune joint diseases in Europe prior to Columbus's voyages. Macroscopic examination reveals a male between 45 and 50 years of age. Palaeopathological and radiological evaluation reveals the left carpal and carpometacarpal ankylosis, affecting the proximal epiphysis of the second to fifth left metacarpals, and the partial fusion of the C2 and C3 verte

Fusion of permanent maxillary incisors of archaeological origin: A case report from late medieval Croatia.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to investigate a case of fusion of the permanent central and lateral right maxillary incisors observed in a middle-aged male from the late medieval town of Sisak in Croatia. DESIGN: "Double teeth" is a term for a developmental anomaly caused by congenital, inherited, acquired and/or idiopathic factors resulting in the union of two adjacent teeth. It usually occurs in three different varieties: concrescence, gemination and fusion. Although there are many reports of such disorders in recent populations, similar examples in archaeological contexts are still rare and, in

Sentiment and Emotional Analysis of Risk Perception in the Herculaneum Archaeological Park during COVID-19 Pandemic.

This paper proposes a methodology for sentiment analysis with emphasis on the emotional aspects of people visiting the Herculaneum Archaeological Park in Italy during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodology provides a valuable means of continuous feedback on perceived risk of the site. A semantic analysis on Twitter text messages provided input to the risk management team with which they could respond immediately mitigating any apparent risk and reducing the perceived risk. A two-stage approach was adopted to prune a massively large dataset from Twitter. In the first phase, a soci

New paleoradiological investigations of ancient human remains from North West Lombardy archaeological excavations.

OBJECTIVE: Since its birth in 1895, radiology has been used to study ancient mummies. The purpose of this article is to present paleoradiological investigations conducted on several medieval human remains in Varese province. Anthropological (generic identification) and paleopathological analyses were carried out with the support of diagnostic imaging (X-ray and CT scans). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Human remains were discovered during excavations of medieval archaeological sites in northwest Lombardy. Classical physical anthropological methods were used for the macroscopic identification of the h

Trauma to the scull: an analysis of injuries in ancient skeletons from North West Lombardy archaeological sites.

Traumatic lesions are among the most important sources of data providing information associated to interpersonal violence within ancient populations. The investigation on weapon-related traumas on human remains allows us to reconstruct the dynamic of the violent episodes. The purposes of this study are to describe the types of skull traumas discovered in several skeletons from medieval necropolis of the North West Lombardy (8th-16th) and to examine their presence and distribution. The injuries observed in our osteoarchaeological collection were in the form of depressed and penetrated traumas.

Middle pleistocene human remains from Tourville-la-Rivière (Normandy, France) and their archaeological context.

Despite numerous sites of great antiquity having been excavated since the end of the 19th century, Middle Pleistocene human fossils are still extremely rare in northwestern Europe. Apart from the two partial crania from Biache-Saint-Vaast in northern France, all known human fossils from this period have been found from ten sites in either Germany or England. Here we report the discovery of three long bones from the same left upper limb discovered at the open-air site of Tourville-la-Rivière in the Seine Valley of northern France. New U-series and combined US-ESR dating on animal teeth produced

Development and Validation of PCR-Based Ancient DNA Analysis for Italian and Western Balkan Archaeological Collections.

INTRODUCTION: The Italian Peninsula and Western Balkans preserve rich archaeological records that extend from pre-Roman times through the Greek colonial, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Genetic investigation of these collections often requires access to specialized high-throughput technologies which are not commonly available or cost-effective method to handle the problem of broken skeletal remains. METHODS: We developed and validated an ancient DNA protocol for Italian and Albanian archeological skeletal samples spanning approximately 2500 years. The protocol included artificial fragmentation

Microbial composition of archaeological middens: tracing human footprints through centuries in Greenland's ancient settlements.

The history of Greenland is marked by different waves of Paleo-Inuit immigration from North America from 2,500 BC to the 12th century and from the 10th to 15th century, Norse settlers immigrated from Northwest Europe and flourished in Southwest Greenland with the introduction of domestic livestock. The different Inuit and Norse cultures created middens by dumping and accumulating domestic waste; a latent source of microbes, including potential pathogens, that might have been preserved due to the general wet and cold conditions in the region. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether ancien

Capillariid diversity in archaeological material from the New and the Old World: clustering and artificial intelligence approaches.

BACKGROUND: Capillariid nematode eggs have been reported in archaeological material in both the New and the Old World, mainly in Europe and South America. They have been found in various types of samples, as coprolites, sediments from latrines, pits, or burial. Modern parasitological records show that around 300 species of capillariids have been described in all vertebrate taxa, including humans, making it a very diversified group. The main proposal of this work is to characterize and identify capillariid eggs found in archaeological sites from Europe and Brazil. METHODS: A total of 39 sample

A case of Multiple Myeloma from 19th century North America: Aligning the clinical and archaeological records.

The first archaeological case of multiple myeloma (MM) from historic period North America is presented. Only 49 cases of MM have been reported from archaeological contexts and recent reviews have alternately rejected either 24 of the cases or all 49 cases and found them all to more likely be cases of metastatic carcinoma (MC). The trend in the debate over the interpretation of these cancers is that MC is an ancient disease while MM is likely a disease of modernity. MM was first recognized as a distinct form of cancer in 1873 with only 17 cases reported by 1900. The first North American clinica

A multi-technique and multiscale comparative study on the efficiency of conservation methods for the stabilisation of waterlogged archaeological pine.

Archaeological wood can be preserved in waterlogged conditions. Due to their degradation in the ground, these archaeological remains are endangered after their discovery, since they decay irretrievably during drying. Conservation measures are used to preserve waterlogged archaeological objects, maintaining their shape and character as much as possible. However, different methods have been developed leading to varying results. This study compares their effectiveness in order to clarify their mode of action. The methods including alcohol-ether resin, lactitol/trehalose, melamine formaldehyde, po
