Bending the Arc of Exercise and Recreation Technology Toward People With Disabilities.

Most of the published research on exercise and disability has focused on short-term efficacy studies targeting specific disability groups. These studies often use grant-related or other financial resources to temporarily remove the many barriers that people with physical/mobility disability experience when attempting to become physically active. In this commentary, we explore how technology can be used to promote more sustainable physical activity outcomes in the home and community using a set of 4 overlapping domains: Access, Usability, Adherence, and Health and Function. In addition, we desc

"I'm very visible but seldom seen": consumer choice and use of mobility aids on public transport.

PURPOSE: The number of mobility aid users continues to rise as the population ages. While mobility aid users rely on public transport due to its affordability, evidence suggests access can be difficult. This study aims to describe people who use mobility aids to access public transport and the role of public transport access in influencing mobility aid choice. METHODS: Sixty-seven mobility aid users participated in telephone surveys which predominantly used a structured quantitative format. Data were analysed descriptively and any additional comments were simply categorized. RESULTS: Thirty-

A public health perspective to environmental barriers and accessibility problems for senior citizens living in ordinary housing.

BACKGROUND: Housing environments that hinder performance of daily activities and impede participation in social life have negative health consequences particularly for the older segment of the population. From a public health perspective accessible housing that supports active and healthy ageing is therefore crucial. The objective of the present study was to make an inventory of environmental barriers and investigate accessibility problems in the ordinary housing stock in Sweden as related to the functional capacity of senior citizens. Particular attention was paid to differences between housi

Overall accessibility to traveling by rail for the elderly with and without functional limitations: the whole-trip perspective.

Elderly persons' perceived accessibility to railway traveling depends on their functional limitations/diseases, their functional abilities and their travel behaviors in interaction with the barriers encountered during whole trips. A survey was conducted on a random sample of 1000 city residents (65-85 years old; 57% response rate). The travels were perceived least accessible by respondents with severely reduced functional ability and by those with more than one functional limitation/disease (e.g., restricted mobility and chronic pain). Those who traveled "often", perceived the accessibility to

Environmental barriers, person-environment fit and mortality among community-dwelling very old people.

BACKGROUND: Environmental barriers are associated with disability-related outcomes in older people but little is known of the effect of environmental barriers on mortality. The aim of this study was to examine whether objectively measured barriers in the outdoor, entrance and indoor environments are associated with mortality among community-dwelling 80- to 89-year-old single-living people. METHODS: This longitudinal study is based on a sample of 397 people who were single-living in ordinary housing in Sweden. Participants were interviewed during 2002-2003, and 393 were followed up for mortali

Housing-related control beliefs and independence in activities of daily living in very old age.

Control beliefs, i.e. a person's perceived control over his or her own behaviour, are important predictors of psychological functioning in old age. The aim of this study is to examine the mediating effect of housing-related control beliefs on the relationship between housing accessibility and independence in activities of daily living (ADL). Moreover, cross-national differences in five European countries were analysed, based on data from the ENABLE-AGE Project. Data were collected at home visits with 1 918 very old people aged 75-89 years, living alone at home in Swedish, German, British, Hung

Exploring therapeutic architectural strategies as recovery- supportive design interventions in selected international sanatorium and therapeutic wellness facilities.

BACKGROUND: Sanatoriums, initially developed for the treatment of tuberculosis, emphasise therapeutic architecture strategies that integrate design elements that enhance patient well-being and recovery. However, modern healthcare facilities often overlook these strategies, resulting in environments that prioritise illness over holistic care. The application of therapeutic architectural strategies (TASs), such as biophilic design, lighting design, and the integration of outdoor spaces, can create restorative therapeutic settings. Despite their benefits, challenges such as inadequate implementat

How architectural design affords experiences of freedom in residential care for older people.

Human values and social issues shape visions on dwelling and care for older people, a growing number of whom live in residential care facilities. These facilities' architectural design is considered to play an important role in realizing care visions. This role, however, has received little attention in research. This article presents a case study of a residential care facility for which the architects made considerable effort to match the design with the care vision. The study offers insights into residents' and caregivers' experiences of, respectively, living and working in this facility, an

Perceived accessibility versus actual physical accessibility of healthcare facilities.

This study addressed how healthcare clinics perceive themselves in regard to accessibility for persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI). All 40 of the clinics surveyed reported that they were wheelchair accessible; however, there was significant variability in the number of sites that actually met the guidelines of the Americans with Disability Act. In general, a person using a wheelchair could enter the building, the examination room, and the bathroom. The majority of sites did not have an examination table that could be lowered to wheelchair level. Most reported limited experience in working

Learning disabilities in the community college and the role of disability services departments.

The community college offers educational opportunities to a diverse population of students. Many of the students attending the community college are considered non-traditional, and have numerous factors not faced by traditional-age students that can affect retention in this population. Learning disabled (LD) students attend the community college at a higher rate than other higher education institutions (Barnett, 1996; Bigaj, 1995; & Henderson, 1992). The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) reported that LDs now constitute the largest single category of disability served by disabi

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate end user perspectives of four existing home access solutions (HAS) and a newly designed experimental device (the ARISE). METHOD: A cross-sectional design was used to evaluate the ARISE prototype against other HAS. Specifically, participants trialed stairs, a ramp, a platform lift (PL), a stair glide and the ARISE, after which they completed questionnaires aimed at soliciting their perspectives of these solutions. The time taken by participants to use each HAS was also collected. RESULTS: Five HAS design features were deemed as important by 90% of partici

The accessibility of substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States for persons with disabilities.

This study assessed the accessibility of a nationally representative sample of substance abuse treatment facilities in the United States for persons with disabilities (PWDs). A stratified random sample of 159 substance abuse treatment facilities in 40 states completed a survey regarding physical accessibility and the provision of services that could enhance the ability to serve individuals with disabilities. Most responding facilities self-reported a variety of barriers to physical accessibility, as well as the lack of services and physical accommodations for persons with sensory limitations.

The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 expands employment opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities.

The primary purpose of the ADA is the full inclusion of persons with disabilities within their communities. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the areas of employment, transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, and state and local government agencies. The person described in this report encountered some of this discrimination. He successfully obtained paid community-integrated employment only after overcoming major obstacles and barriers, the greatest being transportation. In our highly mobile society, reliable transportation is essential for the acq
