AIMS: Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) is cost-effective and eco-friendly for oil exploitation. Genetically modified biosurfactants-producing high-yield strains are promising for ex-situ MEOR. However, can they survive and produce biosurfactants in petroleum reservoirs for in-situ MEOR? What is their effect on the native bacterial community?
METHODS AND RESULTS: A genetically modified indigenous biosurfactants-producing strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa PrhlAB was bioaugmented in simulated reservoir environments. Pseudomonas aeruginosa PrhlAB could stably colonize in simulated reservoirs. B

Travellers' diarrhoea (TD) is the most frequent illness experienced by international travellers to lower-income countries with bacterial agents considered to account for 80-90% of cases. In this review, we summarise evidence published on bacterial TD over the past 10 years, focusing on the epidemiology and aetiology of TD. Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) continue to be the most commonly implicated bacteria in TD, although Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) and Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) now appear to be predominant where Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) was previously considered most pr

To reveal the occurrence and mechanisms for dispersal of antibiotic resistance (AbR) among the microbial assemblages inhabiting impacted coastal environments, we performed a weekly, two-year duration time-series study at two urban beaches between 2014 and 2016. We combined quantitative PCR and multiplex PCR/reverse line blot techniques to track patterns in the occurrence of 31 AbR genes, including genes that confer resistance to antibiotics that are critically important antimicrobials for human medicine. Patterns in the abundance of these genes were linked to specific microbial groups and envi

Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are key odorants in sludge anaerobic digestion (AD), but their temperature-dependent transformation mechanisms remain unclear. This study compared mesophilic (35 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) AD by integrating VSC profiles, microbial communities, sulfur-related enzymes, methionine degradation, and EPS characteristics. Mesophilic digestion produced 24.25 μg·g-1 TS VSCs, with H2S accounting for 96.91%, whereas MM, DMS, and DMDS were marginal. Thermophilic digestion increased total VSCs to 180.27 μg·g-1 TS and shifted dominance to MM (61.04%), followed by H2S (29.8

Bovine by-products, such as liver, could be an underestimated source of Campylobacter jejuni. Therefore, our aims were to evaluate the occurrence of C. jejuni and other Campylobacteraceae in retail beef liver and characterize their antibiotic resistance (ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, erythromycin and gentamicin) and potential genetic relationship by flagellin gene restriction fragment length polymorphism (flaA-RFLP) and multilocus sequence typing with clinical strains. Seventy-six out of 206 samples (36·9%) were positive for Campylobacter and related organisms. Arcobacter butzleri was the most

Most rapid identification methods for Campylobacter are designed to detect thermotolerant Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) and Campylobacter coli (C. coli). A growing number of thermosensitive Campylobacter species are now gaining recognition as emerging human pathogens. Methods are lacking for the rapid screening of these emerging species. Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) is a nucleic acid amplification method that allows for the rapid and cost-effective detection of bacteria. Degenerate primers against the 16S rRNA sequences for C. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, C. upsaliensis, C. ur

Viral and bacterial pathogens are a significant economic concern to the US broiler industry and the ecological epicenter for poultry pathogens is the mixture of bedding material, chicken excrement and feathers that comprises the litter of a poultry house. This study used high-throughput sequencing to assess the richness and diversity of poultry litter bacterial communities, and to look for connections between these communities and the environmental characteristics of a poultry house including its history of gangrenous dermatitis (GD). Cluster analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed differ

Ferric ion-respiring microorganisms (FRMs) are a group of prokaryotes that use Fe(III) as well as other metals as terminal electron acceptors in the process of anaerobic respiration. Special attention is paid to a biotechnological significance of FRMs because of their potential role in electricity production in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) where the terminal acceptor of the electrons during anaerobic respiration is not a ferric ion but the anode. One of the best known FRMs is the Shewanellaceae family. Most of the Shewanella species have been isolated from marine environments. In this report, s

Amyl salicylate (AS) is a fragrance massively used as a personal care product and following the discharged in wastewaters may end up in the aquatic environment representing a potential threat for the ecosystem and living organisms. AS was recently detected in water of the Venice Lagoon, a vulnerable area continuously subjected to the income of anthropogenic chemicals. The lagoon is a relevant area for mollusc farming, including the Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) having an important economic and ecological role. Despite high levels of AS occurred in water of the Lagoon of Ven

Chloroform (CF) can undergo reductive dechlorination to dichloromethane, chloromethane, and methane. However, competition for hydrogen (H2 ), the electron-donor substrate, may cause poor dechlorination when multiple electron acceptors are present. Common acceptors in anaerobic environments are nitrate (NO3- ), sulfate (SO42- ), and bicarbonate (HCO3- ). We evaluated CF dechlorination in the presence of HCO3- at 1.56 e- Eq/m2 -day, then NO3- at 0.04-0.15 e- Eq/m2 -day, and finally NO3- (0.04 e- Eq/m2 -day) along with SO42- at 0.33 e- Eq/m2 -day in an H2 -based membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR). There are numerous microorganisms, especial pathogens, in the discharges. Those microorganisms are discharged into the river and sea through sewage outfalls, which results in possible health risks to coastal populations. And more attention should be paid to municipal discharges in developing countries. This study investigated the microbial community in the discharges by constructing 16S rDNA clones library and using the PCR-RFLP technology. Phylogenetic analysis of bacteria in municipal discharges showed that there were 59 species, which were divided into 11 classes. Proteobacteria accounted f

Wastewater storage before reuse is regulated in some countries. Investigations of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) during wastewater storage are necessary for lowering the risks for wastewater reuse but are still mostly lacking. This study aimed to investigate pathogens, including harmful plant pathogens, and ARGs during 180 d of swine wastewater (SWW) storage in an anaerobic storage experiment. The contents of total organic carbon and total nitrogen in SWW were found to consistently decrease with the extension of storage time. Bacterial abundance and fungal abundance significa

Environmental changes and human activities can alter the structure and diversity of aquatic microbial communities. In this work, we analyzed the bacterial community dynamics of an urban stream to understand how these factors affect the composition of river microbial communities. Samples were taken from a stream situated in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which flows through residential, peri-urban horticultural, and industrial areas. For sampling, two stations were selected: one influenced by a series of industrial waste treatment plants and horticultural farms (PL), and the other influenced by resid

Under decreasing C/N (from 8.8 to 3.5) conditions, an alternating anaerobic/aerobic biofilter (AABF) was used to remove nitrogen and accumulate/recover phosphorus (P) from synthetic wastewater. The AABF was periodically (every 10 days) fed with an additional carbon source (10 L, chemical oxygen demand (COD) = 900 mg L-1 sodium acetate (NaAC) solution) in the anaerobic phase to induce the release of P sequestered in the biofilm. An increase in PHA storage in the biofilm was observed and characterized with TEM and a GC-MS method. The accumulation of P and removal of total nitrogen occurred prima

BACKGROUND: Acute undifferentiated febrile illness (AUFI) represents a major health challenge in tropical regions due to its wide range of etiologies. In Villeta, Colombia, previous studies investigated common causes such as malaria, arboviral diseases, leptospirosis and rickettsiosis, as well as several neglected bacterial agents. However, some patients remained without an identified etiology, underscoring the need for broader approaches to uncover other potential causes. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate into other potential bacterial causes of AUFI through advanced

Pathogenic bacteria are ubiquitously detected in various natural and artificial water systems, posing potential threats to public health and safety. To elucidate the structure of potentially pathogenic bacterial communities and their spatio-temporal patterns, a two-year study examined four contrasting land-use/land-cover types (urban, industrial, agricultural, natural forest) in a hypereutrophic urban river network of eastern China. Three predominant potentially pathogenic species appeared in both the particle-attached (PA) and free-living (FL) bacterial communities: Flavobacterium succinicans
