BACKGROUND: Poor state of water supply systems, shortage of water purification facilities and disinfection systems, low quality of drinking water generally in Russia and particularly in the regions of the Russian Arctic, Siberia and Far East have been defined in the literature. However, no standard protocol of water security assessment has been used in the majority of studies.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Uniform water security indicators collected from Russian official statistical sources for the period 2000-2011 were used for comparison for 18 selected regions in the Russian Arctic, Siberia an

Human adaptation to extreme cold has been studied predominantly in Arctic populations, leaving the genetic basis of cold resilience in non-Arctic high-latitude regions insufficiently understood. The Amur-Heilong River Basin (AR) in Northeast Asia represents one of the coldest inhabited regions in East Asia, yet its long-term resident populations remain underexplored at the genomic level. Here, we compiled high-coverage whole-genome sequences for 78 individuals representing three indigenous AR populations (Daur, Evenki, and Oroqen) to investigate their demographic history and genetic adaptation

Black carbon (BC) is an important short-lived climate forcer that contributes to Arctic warming, yet observations of BC in the Arctic marine boundary layer remain sparse. Here, we report shipborne measurements of refractory BC (rBC) mass and particle mixing state during a cruise from southeast to west Greenland in May-June 2022. Using a single-particle soot photometer (SP2XR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we characterize both rBC concentrations and individual-particle morphology, representing one of the first ship-based SP2XR data sets in the Arctic marine boundary layer. rBC con

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between individual natural light exposure, sleep need, and depression at two latitudes, one extreme with a few hours of light per day during winter, and the other with equal hours of light and darkness throughout the year.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included a sample of Brazilian workers (Equatorial, n = 488 workers) and a Swedish sample (Arctic, n = 1,273).
RESULTS: The reported mean total natural light exposure per 4-week cycle differed significantly between the Equatorial and Arctic regions. However, shiftworkers from b

The Arctic is one of the fastest-warming marine regions in the world, which is changing the timing of seasonal sea-ice dynamics. The annual summer breakup of sea-ice coincides with resource pulses, which provide critical food sources for consumers to exploit. Marine organisms respond behaviourally to exploit these resources, with some migrating to presumably maximize feeding opportunities, whereas others remain resident, providing an ideal model to assess potential variability in fish movements and feeding. To assess variability in how migratory and resident fishes exploit increases in resourc

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a very common zoonotic parasite in humans and animals worldwide. Human seroprevalence is high in some regions of Canada's North and is thought to be associated with the consumption of traditionally prepared country foods, such as caribou, walrus, ringed seal and beluga. While numerous studies have reported on the prevalence of T. gondii in these animals, in the general absence of felid definitive hosts in the North there has been considerable debate regarding the source of infection, particularly in marine mammals. It has been proposed that fish could be involv

BACKGROUND: A majority of mutations within the beta-amyloid region of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) gene cause inherited forms of intracerebral hemorrhage. Most of these mutations may also cause cognitive impairment, but the Arctic APP mutation is the only known intra-beta-amyloid mutation to date causing the more typical clinical picture of Alzheimer disease.
OBJECTIVE: To describe features of 1 Swedish and 1 American family with the previously reported Arctic APP mutation.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Affected and nonaffected carriers of the Arctic APP mutation from the Swedish

Antarctic ozone depletion is associated with enhanced chlorine from anthropogenic chlorofluorocarbons and heterogeneous chemistry under cold conditions. The deep Antarctic "hole" contrasts with the generally weaker depletions observed in the warmer Arctic. An unusually cold Arctic stratospheric season occurred in 2011, raising the question of how the Arctic ozone chemistry in that year compares with others. We show that the averaged depletions near 20 km across the cold part of each pole are deeper in Antarctica than in the Arctic for all years, although 2011 Arctic values do rival those seen

Phosphine (PH(3)), a reduced phosphorus compound, is a highly toxic and reactive atmospheric trace gas. In this study, a total of ten ornithogenic soil/sediment profiles were collected from tundra ecosystems of east Antarctica and Arctic, and matrix-bound phosphine (MBP), the phosphorus fractions and alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) were analyzed. High MBP concentrations were found in these profiles with the range from 39.59 ng kg(-1) dw to 11.77 μg kg(-1) dw. MBP showed a consistent vertical distribution pattern in almost all the soil profiles, and its concentrations increased at soil surf

In recent decades, the Arctic has experienced rapid atmospheric warming and sea ice loss, with an ice-free Arctic projected by the end of this century. Cyclones are synoptic weather events that transport heat and moisture into the Arctic, and have complex impacts on sea ice, and the local and global climate. However, the effect of a changing climate on Arctic cyclone behavior remains poorly understood. This study uses high resolution (4 km), regional modeling techniques and downscaled global climate reconstructions and projections to examine how recent and future climatic changes alter cyclone

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are emerging contaminants posing significant risks to the Arctic environment and human health. Concerns have been raised about the origins of Arctic OPFRs because atmospheric models have failed to reproduce the high Arctic OPFR levels due to unresolved phase-partitioning dynamics and atmospheric chemistry. Here, we implement a kinetic gas-particle accumulation scheme, in which particle-bound OPFRs do not re-equilibrate to the gas phase, into the atmospheric chemistry model GEOS-Chem High Performance (GCHP) v14.5.0. In Nunavut, public health management of tuberculosis (TB) remains a challenge due to social and economic inequities, geographic isolation, TB-related stigma, and distrust in healthcare linked to a history of colonialism. A TB outbreak was declared in Naujaat, Nunavut following an increase in reported cases starting in January 2023. In response to this outbreak, the Naujaat community-wide TB screening (CWS) clinic was held from April 15th to May 29th, 2024, with support from the Nunavut Tunavik Incorporated (NTI) leadership and community engagement teams. This article outlines the steps taken i

Seal finger is a rare zoonotic bacterial infection typically caused by Mycoplasma species, transmitted from seals (Pinnipedia suborder) to humans. First documented in 1907, this disease remains under-researched despite growing relevance as humans increasingly encroach on Arctic regions. We conducted a review of multiple databases to evaluate its history, prevalence, at-risk populations, and treatment options. The infection primarily affects individuals who have close contact with marine mammals, including fishers, hunters, sealers, and marine biologists. Seal finger usually presents similarly

The Arctic is habitat for a range of animal species, many of which are consumed by Indigenous Peoples and are central to Indigenous food sovereignty. Country food (locally harvested food from the land, sea and sky) is nutritious, and harvesting country food is an important cultural activity, making understanding of potential zoonotic disease exposure an important concern for public health. The objective of this scoping review was to describe the animal-related research in the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada and Greenland, with a focus on zoonotic pathogens in animals and humans. Overall, 3072

Sediments covering Arctic continental shelves are uniquely impacted by ice processes. Delivery of sediments is generally limited to the summer, when rivers are ice free, permafrost bluffs are thawing, and sea ice is undergoing its seasonal retreat. Once delivered to the coastal zone, sediments follow complex pathways to their final depocenters-for example, fluvial sediments may experience enhanced seaward advection in the spring due to routing under nearshore sea ice; during the open-water season, boundary-layer transport may be altered by strong stratification in the ocean due to ice melt; du

Since the last Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) effort to review biological effects of mercury (Hg) on Arctic biota in 2011 and 2018, there has been a considerable number of new Arctic bird studies. This review article provides contemporary Hg exposure and potential health risk for 36 Arctic seabird and shorebird species, representing a larger portion of the Arctic than during previous AMAP assessments now also including parts of the Russian Arctic. To assess risk to birds, we used Hg toxicity benchmarks established for blood and converted to egg, liver, and feather tissues. S

Recent studies have suggested that liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging contaminants in the environment, and knowledge of this class of substances is very rare. Here, we reviewed existing LCM-related documents, i.e., publications and patents, and established a database involving 1173 LCMs. These 1173 LCMs were further calculated for their physicochemical properties, i.e., persistence (P), bioaccumulation (B), long-range transport potential (LRTP), and Arctic contamination and bioaccumulation potential (ACBAP). We found that 476 out of them were P&B chemicals (99% of them were halogenate

BACKGROUND: Health assessment of seals in captivity include haematology and serum biochemistry measurements. Because such parameters differ between species, it is crucial to have species-specific reference values for the interpretation of clinical samples. Furthermore, differences in nutrition and environment, life cycles as well as seasonal/annual cycles and varying physiological conditions can potentially affect serum chemistry and haematology parameters. Blood samples from four captive adult bearded seals (initially caught as pups in Svalbard, Norway, now held at Polaria, an Arctic experien

Top predators are used as indicators of contaminant trends across space and time. However, signals are integrated over complex food webs, and variation in diet may confound such signals. Trophic position, assessed by bulk δ15N, is widely used to infer the variation in diet relevant to contamination, yet a single variable cannot completely describe complex food webs. Thus, we examined relationships across three aquatic systems varying from a single species to a small food web using bulk values from four isotopes and 21 amino acid-specific values. Because variation in baseline ('source') δ15N ca

Reindeer meat is an important source of crucial nutrients (protein, fat, minerals) in nutrition of Arctic indigenous people. The authentic meat properties are formed under the influence of many factors, the main of which are the lifetime factors including the region of production and peculiarities of keeping. The regional peculiarities of the reindeer meat composition are quite poorly reflected in the reference books on the chemical composition of food products and in the scientific publications. The aim of the work was to evaluate nutritional value, the level of amino acids, fatty acids, mine
