Transovarial transmission (TOT) of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), the agent of Lyme disease, by the Ixodes persulcatus group of hard ticks (Ixodidae) has frequently been reported in the literature since the discovery of Lyme disease 1982. Evidence for and against TOT by B. burgdorferi has led to uncertainty and confusion in the literature, causing misconceptions that may have public health consequences. In this report, we review the published information implicating B. burgdorferi as a bacterium transovarially transmitted among ticks of the Ixodes persulcatus group and present new data ind

Tick-borne relapsing fever group borreliae (TBRFGB) are spirochetes that cause disease in humans and animals. Little is known about the prevalence of TBRFGB infections in ticks and humans in Kazakhstan. A total of 846 ticks belonging to ten species of the family Ixodidae and three species of the family Argasidae were collected from the vegetation, poultry shelters, domestic ruminants, bitten humans, pigeons, dogs and house walls in four oblasts of the southern and southeastern regions of Kazakhstan. The ticks were subjected to DNA extraction and identification of TBRFGB by conventional PCR usi

BACKGROUND: Bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) serve as natural reservoirs for many zoonotic pathogens worldwide, including vector-borne pathogens. However, bat-associated parasitic arthropods and their microbiota are thus far not thoroughly described in many regions across the globe, nor is their role in the spillover of pathogens to other vertebrate species well understood. Basic epidemiological research is needed to disentangle the complex ecological interactions among bats, their specific ectoparasites and microorganisms they harbor. Some countries, such as Ukraine, are particularly data-deficien

Ornithodoros ticks, a genus of soft ticks in the family Argasidae, occur worldwide including throughout deserts in the Southwestern United States. In the Mojave Desert, Ornithodoros parkeri and O. turicata are common ectoparasites of Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii). These two tick species are vectors of Borrelia spp. that cause tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) in people. However, the distribution of O. parkeri and O. turicata and TBRF group Borrelia infection prevalence remain poorly known in the Mojave Desert. These ticks are commonly found in desert tortoise burrows. In this st

Ornithodoros lahorensis (syn. Alveonasus lahorensis) is a species of soft tick within the Argasidae family, known for causing debilitating symptoms, as well as transmitting pathogens that pose significant health risks and economic losses to affected livestock and potentially humans. The salivary gland is the key component in the pathogenic mechanisms of ticks, as it not only facilitates feeding but also serves as a medium for pathogen transmission. Here, data-independent acquisition (DIA) coupled to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to quantitatively identify d

Prescribed fire was investigated as a method for controlling ixodid and argasid ticks in chaparral habitats in northern California. Two experimental and two adjacent control plots within a wildlife preserve were monitored for 1 yr postburn. Ticks were collected by flagging vegetation, by CO2-baited pitfall trap, and by live-trapping rodents. Twice as many rodents were caught at control sites compared with burn sites and no dusky-footed woodrats, Neotoma fuscipes Baird, were found in the treatment sites postburn. This species is known to be a reservoir of the agents of Lyme disease, Borrelia bu

The salivary glands of blood-sucking arthropods contain a redundant 'magic potion' that counteracts their vertebrate host's hemostasis, inflammation, and immunity. We here describe the salivary transcriptome and proteomics (sialome) of the soft tick Ornithodoros coriaceus. The resulting analysis helps to consolidate the classification of common proteins found in both soft and hard ticks, such as the lipocalins, Kunitz, cystatin, basic tail, hebraein, defensin, TIL domain, metalloprotease, 5'-nucleotidase/apyrase, and phospholipase families, and also to identify protein families uniquely found

The N-terminal sequence of the competitive and slow tight-binding factor Xa inhibitor (fXaI; Ki = 0.83 +/- 0.10 nM) isolated from the salivary glands of Ornithodoros savignyi ticks (Acari: Argasidae) was employed to design a degenerate gene-specific primer (GSP) for 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (3'-RACE). The primer consisted of a sequence encoding for amino acid residues 5-11. A full-length gene was next constructed from the 3'-RACE product in a two-step PCR procedure and successfully expressed by the BAC-TO-BAC baculovirus expression system. The deduced amino acid sequence of the gene

Ticks (Parasitiformes: Ixodida) comprise about 1008 species worldwide, distributed among the families Argasidae, Ixodidae, and Nuttalliellidae. In the Neotropics, the family Ixodidae represents approximately 14% of global diversity and includes genera of medical and veterinary importance such as Amblyomma, Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, Ixodes, and Rhipicephalus. However, the taxonomic delimitation and distribution of several neotropical species remain uncertain due to the existence of cryptic species complexes, unreliable historical records, and the lack of consistent morphological descriptions

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease and tick-borne relapsing fever are worldwide systemic borrelioses caused by several Borrelia species transmitted by hard ticks (family Ixodidae) and soft ticks (family Argasidae), respectively. A previous seroepidemiological study of Lyme borreliosis showed several serologically reactive patients with clinically atypical presentations, and this discovery led to the hypothesis that some of the cases of Lyme borreliosis had been caused by another borrelia organism.
METHODS: Blood from patients in southern Spain who had suspected Lyme disease or relapsing-fever borrelios

Bat ectoparasites are an integral part of the wildlife and of host-parasite interactions in the Baja California Peninsula (BCP), Mexico, but the study of these ectoparasites is scarce in this area. In this study the ectoparasite faunal composition of the bat families Phyllostomidae and Vespertilionidae was determined and the first ectoparasitic checklist from BCP was developed. Thirteen bat species (Phyllostomidae, N = 1, Vespertilionidae, N = 12) from the northern and central region of the BCP were analysed. The checklist is presented in two tables, a parasite-host list and a host-parasite li

BACKGROUND: When colonization and gene flow depend on host-mediated dispersal, a key factor affecting vector dispersal potential is the time spent on the host for the blood meal, a characteristic that can vary strongly among life history stages. Using a 2-patch vector-pathogen population model and seabird ticks as biological examples, we explore how vector colonization rates and the spread of infectious agents may be shaped by life stage-dependent dispersal. We contrast hard (Ixodidae) and soft (Argasidae) tick systems, which differ strongly in blood- feeding traits.
RESULTS: We find that vec

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a deadly viral infection reported from more than 30 countries. It is considered a zoonosis↱ and tick bites are the main route of transmission in nature. So far, the virus has been identified in 31 species of hard (Ixodidae) and soft (Argasidae) ticks. The aim of this study was to determine the rate of CCHF virus infection in hard ticks from South-Khorasan province, east of Iran.
METHODS: In this study, 684 livestock including 302 sheep, 344 goats, 16 cows and 22 camels were sampled from Birjand, Qaen, Khusf, Darmian and Sarbis

At least 38 viral species are transmitted by ticks. Virus-tick-vertebrate host relationships are highly specific and less than 10% of all tick species (Argasidae and Ixodidae) are known to play a role as vectors of arboviruses. However, a few tick species transmit several (e.g. Ixodes ricinus, Amblyomma variegatum) or many (I. uriae) tick-borne viruses. Tick-borne viruses are found in six different virus families (Asfarviridae, Reoviridae, Rhabdoviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Bunyaviridae, Flaviviridae) and at least 9 genera. Some as yet unassigned tick-borne viruses may belong to a seventh family

Relapsing fever group Borrelia (RFGB) are motile spirochetes transmitted to mammalian or avian hosts through the bite of hematophagous arthropods, such as soft ticks (Argasidae), hard ticks (Ixodidae) and the human clothing lice. RFGB can infect pets such as dogs and cats, as well as birds, cattle and humans. Borrelia recurrentis, B. anserina and B. theileri are considered to have worldwide distribution, affecting humans, domestic birds and ruminants, respectively. Borrelia spp. associated with soft ticks are transmitted mainly by Ornithodoros ticks and thrive in endemic foci in tropical and s

Ticks transmit pathogens of veterinary and public health importance. Understanding their diversity is critical as infestations lead to significant economic losses globally. To date, over 90 species across three families have been identified in South Africa. However, the taxonomy of most species has not been resolved due to morphological identification challenges. DNA barcoding through the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD) is therefore a valuable tool for species verifications for biodiversity assessments. This study conducted an analysis of South African tick COI barcodes on BOLD by verifyin

More than seventy tick species have been reported in Brazil. Despite the emergence of tick-borne diseases in Neotropical region, there are still limited data available on tick species parasitizing humans in Brazil. Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost state of Brazil, comprising the only part of Brazilian territory inside the Pampa biome, as well as the transition between subtropical and temperate zones. Here, we report on human parasitism by ticks in Rio Grande do Sul state between 2004 and 2017. Seventy cases of human parasitism by ticks were recorded, with a total of 81 tick specimens coll
