[Unusual case: injury of the 4 heart valves in a patient with old heart injury caused by fire arm. Review of the literature].

We review the literature on heart wounds. Along the history surgeons regarded heart wounds as forbidden place for therapeutic approach. We present a patient who sustained a bullet wound to the heart and two years later 3 knife' stabs in the same place injuring its 4 valves and inducing 2 fistulae: one from the aorta to the pulmonary artery, the other from left-ventricle and the pulmonary artery. Surgery was successful in repairing the damage without the need of valve replacement.

The Value of Strength as a Predictor of Musculoskeletal Injury in Canadian Armed Forces Basic Infantry Candidates.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) impact military organizations by threatening their operational readiness, warranting investigation into relevant factors to inform risk reduction strategies. While several self-reported and physical performance measures have been associated with MSKI among military personnel, few have been validated and none have been reported in Canadian basic infantry candidates. The purpose of this study was to investigate associations between self-reported and physical performance measures and MSKI, and determine their validity as predictors of MSKI, in Canadia

Modeling Perceived Exertion during Graded Arm Cycling Exercise in Spinal Cord Injury.

PURPOSE: RPE may be useful for exercise testing and prescription in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), although the roles of differentiated central and peripheral fatigue during exercise are not clear. We aimed to model differentiated RPE responses during graded arm cycling in individuals with SCI and to describe their relationship to cardiorespiratory outcomes. METHODS: Thirty-six individuals with SCI (13 paraplegia and 23 tetraplegia) completed a maximal graded arm cycling exercise test to volitional exhaustion (5 W·min paraplegia; 10 W·min tetraplegia). Participants were asked to r

Active-Arm Passive-Leg Exercise Improves Cardiovascular Function in Spinal Cord Injury.

In a 43-yr-old male subject with a chronic T3 AIS A spinal cord injury, the acute cardiorespiratory responses to active upper-extremity exercise alone and combined active-arm passive-leg exercise (AAPLE) were investigated, along with the cardiorespiratory, cardiac, vascular, and body composition responses to a 6-wk AAPLE interval training intervention. AAPLE elicited superior acute maximal cardiorespiratory responses compared with upper-extremity exercise alone. In response to a 6-wk interval training regimen, AAPLE caused a 25% increase in peak oxygen uptake, a 10% increase in resting stroke

Injuries associated with combat sports, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2010-2013.

The practice of combat sports creates a potential for training- and sports-related injuries among military members. During the 4-year surveillance period, there were 12,108 cases of injuries associated with combat sports among active component service members; the overall incidence rate was 21.0 per 10,000 person-years (p-yrs). The rates were higher among service members who were male, Hispanic, in the youngest age groups, in the Army, junior enlisted, and in combat-specific occupations. The rate among recruit/ trainees (779.4 per 10,000 p-yrs) was more than 165 times the rate among all other
