Euphractus sexcinctus has a diverse diet, so it needs anatomical and habitual features to help it get its meals. Therefore, the objective is to study the morphology of the small and large intestines of the six-banded armadillo (E. sexcinctus). The research was authorized and approved under number 136/16. Six animals, obtained from victims of predatory hunting, were dissected for the research. For the anatomical analysis, the specimens were dissected and photographed. The fragments of each organ were submitted to histological routine to obtain slides stained with hematoxylin-eosin, toluidine bl

Armadillos and anteaters exhibit a wide range of interactions with various pathogens and ectoparasites, which, along with their physiological and ecological characteristics, contribute to their potential as hosts for a broad variety of pathogens with zoonotic potential. However, there has been limited research into the occurrence and diversity of vector-borne agents in this group of mammals. The present study aimed to investigate the occurrence and molecular identity of Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., Bartonella spp. and hemotropic mycoplasmas (hemoplasmas) in free-ranging armadillos and antea

OBJECTIVE: To use DNA detection methodologies to test for M. leprae in nine-banded armadillos inhabiting forested regions located around the cities and towns where leprosy patients have been identified.
DESIGN: Ear lobe biopsies of 22 nine-banded armadillos were studied during a 2 year period. The biopsies were processed for DNA extraction and amplification by nested polymerase chain reaction (N-PCR) of a fragment of the high copy DNA locus of M. leprae known as R-LEP.
RESULTS: Nine of the 22 (40.9%) armadillos evaluated showed positive signals for M. leprae. Sequencing confirmed that PCR pr

This study investigated infection by Leishmania spp., Leptospira spp., Toxoplasma gondii, and Trypanosoma cruzi in six-banded armadillos (Euphractus sexcinctus) from the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. Twenty specimens of E. sexcinctus were captured alive by wildlife veterinarians from their natural habitats in different locations. The animals were euthanized following induction of anesthesia, and different biological samples were collected. Infection with four pathogens was subsequently evaluated: Leishmania infection was investigated by spleen and liver Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR

INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis is the most common subcutaneous mycosis observed in Brazil and it is generally consequent to a little trauma caused by vegetal particles or spines which inoculate the fungi in the subcutaneous area. Although sporotrichosis had been frequently mentioned with armadillo hunting this form has not been widely reported in Brazil until now. In this study we report ten cases of sporotrichosis evolving the armadillo's hunting diagnosed in some towns located in the central and west regions of Rio Grande do Sul State.
METHODS: The cases were established based on clinical and

Eleven wild-caught nine-banded armadillos were infected with cercariae of the Kenyan strain of Schistosoma mansoni for 1-25 weeks. Distribution of eggs along and within the gut and liver was similar to that seen in human schistosomiasis. However, egg excretion was poor, eggs were small, rate of infection was low, and the prepatent period was long. From these data it is concluded that Dasypus novemcinctus is an inefficient reservoir host of S. mansoni.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is an endemic fungal disease to Latin America caused by at least five species-level genotypes of Paracoccidioides, named P. lutzii, P. brasiliensis (S1a and S1b populations), P. americana, P. restrepiensis, and P. venezuelensis. In this manuscript, we report on Paracoccidioides sp. sampling efforts in armadillos from two different areas in Brazil. We sequenced the genomes of seven Paracoccidioides isolates and used phylogenomics and populations genetics for genotyping. We found that P. brasiliensis and P. lutzii are both present in the Amazon region. Additionally, we ide

Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae) is a human pathogen and the causative agent for leprosy, a chronic disease characterized by lesions of the skin and peripheral nerve damage. Zoonotic transmission of M. leprae to humans by nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) has been shown to occur in the southern United States, mainly in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida. Nine-banded armadillos are also common in South America, and residents living in some areas in Brazil hunt and kill armadillos as a dietary source of protein. This study examines the extent of M. leprae infection in wild armadillos and

The objective of this study was to characterize and estimate the population of ovarian preantral follicles in juvenile six-banded armadillos. Pairs of ovaries from five armadillos were collected during a routine epidemiological survey of leprosis (three healthy and two infected females). Ovaries weighed approximately 0.06 kg, representing a gonadosomatic index of 6.9 ± 0.8%. The mean ovarian follicular population was 15,567.2 preantral follicles per ovarian pair. For most females, follicular population was mainly composed of primordial follicles. No major histological ovarian parameter was aff

Natural infection of armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in Northern Brazil was reported in 1986, raising great interest in the understanding of the role of this mammal in the epidemiological cycle of the fungus. Recently, P. brasiliensis was isolated from the soil of Ibiá, State of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. Armadillos captured in this area were evaluated for the presence of P. brasiliensis in the viscera and infection was detected in 4/16 animals (25%). Fungal yeast phase cells were observed in three of the four infected armadillos by direct microscop

Desmoglein-2 (DSG2) is a desmosomal cadherin involved in cell-cell adhesion within cardiac tissue. A variant of uncertain significance (VUS), involving a phenylalanine-to-cysteine substitution at residue 833 (F833C), was identified and analyzed for its potential impact on the interaction between DSG2 and its intracellular binding partner plakoglobin. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, in silico pathogenicity predictions, and structural stability analyses were performed to assess the effects of this substitution. The F833C variant shows significantly reduced binding energy between DSG2 and pl

The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is a mammal of the Xenarthra Superorder, which inhabits Central, South and North America. Few morphological descriptions are observed in this species, including the respiratory tract; therefore, the objective of this study was to describe morphologically the lower respiratory tract of the nine-banded armadillo. Five animals were dissected, and the macroscopic and microscopic aspects were analysed. In the anatomical analysis, the perfusion technique was performed with vinyl acetate and the fragments of tissue from respiratory organs (trachea, bro

Available hypotheses proposed to explain the mechanism of zygotic splitting fail to explain why monozygotic twins are more prevalent after all methods of assisted reproduction and which structure is likely to control this phenomenon. Arguably, a small proportion of oocytes might have an inborn propensity to undergo splitting upon fertilization leading to the constant prevalence of spontaneous monozygotic conceptions among different populations. Ovarian stimulation would then predictably increase the number of available splitting-prone oocytes and consequently would increase the chance for such

Missense substitutions in the presenilin 1 (PS1) and presenilin 2 (PS2) proteins are associated with early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease. We have used yeast-two-hybrid and coimmunoprecipitation methods to show that the large cytoplasmic loop domains of PS1 and PS2 interact specifically with three members of the armadillo protein family, including beta-catenin, p0071, and a novel neuronal-specific armadillo protein--neural plakophilin-related armadillo protein (NPRAP). The PS1:NPRAP interaction occurs between the arm repeats of NPRAP and residues 372-399 at the C-terminal end of the large

The three-dimensional structure of the lamina propria of the hard and soft palatine mucosa of the nine-banded armadillo was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Sodium hydroxide cell maceration method was applied to demonstrate the architecture of the connective tissue papillae. The palatine mucosa of the armadillo had a triangular shape and measured appr. 6.5 cm length. The hard palate showed 9 transverse palatine plicae while the soft palate was smooth. In the 10% NaOH treated specimens, the lamina propria of the hard palatine mucosa showed numerous connective tissue papillae with a gen

Lectins have been used to study populations and discrete differentiation stages of lymphocytes. Likewise, lectins have been of practical importance in promoting mitogenic stimulation of lymphocytes in numerous species. In this research project, we took advantage of these tools in an attempt to identify specific subsets of peripheral blood lymphocytes obtained from healthy nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus). The same cell source served to evaluate mitogenic stimulation. Twelve FITC-labeled lectins were used; 5 (ConA, LcH, RCA, WGA and UEA) reacted with almost 100% of the lymphocytes

The giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus) is found in diverse habitats from South America. A female adult giant armadillo with a body mass of 45 kg was used. The animal was a victim of trampling on highway AC-40, at 70 km, near the municipality of Capixaba-Acre and the corpse donated to the Animal Anatomy Laboratory at Federal University of Acre (UFAC). The arterial system was filled with natural latex via the thoracic aorta in a direction opposite the blood flow to facilitate the description of the aortic arch and its side branches. The study was approved by CEUA/UFAC - no. 053/2015 and SISBIO

Microtubule dynamics are critically important for plant cell development. Here, we show that Arabidopsis thaliana ARMADILLO-REPEAT KINESIN1 (ARK1) plays a key role in root hair tip growth by promoting microtubule catastrophe events. This destabilizing activity appears to maintain adequate free tubulin concentrations in order to permit rapid microtubule growth, which in turn is correlated with uniform tip growth. Microtubules in ark1-1 root hairs exhibited reduced catastrophe frequency and slower growth velocities, both of which were restored by low concentrations of the microtubule-destabilizi

Sixty-three Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolates obtained from three nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus), one Amazonian armadillo's and 19 clinical isolates were compared by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis with the primer OPG-19. The isolates were divided into three major clusters, I, II and III. Coincidences between human and armadillo isolates were observed in clusters I and II. Cluster III consisted only of armadillos' isolates. The results suggested that (I) humans may acquire P. brasiliensis infection by contact with armadillo's environment, (II) there may be P. bras
