Investigating allergic rhinitis effects on laryngopharyngeal reflux in Sudanese people during the Sudanese armed conflict.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) involves the reflux of stomach contents into the upper aerodigestive tract and is often linked to allergic rhinitis (AR), an inflammatory nasal condition. This study investigates the potential association between AR and LPR in Sudanese adults, focusing on individuals with asthma. Analytical, community based cross-sectional study was conducted online (June 11-July 21, 2024) using convenient sampling, which included Sudanese adults aged 18 and older. Validated Arabic versions of the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) and the Score for Allergic Rhinitis (SFAR) assessed LPR

Indigenous Plasmodium vivax upsurge in the Eastern Mediterranean, Western Pacific, and South East Asia regions - beyond the constant culpability of climate change, COVID-19, and armed conflicts.

Controlling Plasmodium vivax presents greater challenges compared to Plasmodium falciparum. Here, we analyzed epidemiological data on indigenous P. vivax cases from the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific regions in recent years. Significant upsurges are observed in more than half of the countries within these regions. In Papua New Guinea and Yemen, the increase has been consistent since 2015, while others, including Indonesia and Pakistan, have experienced sharp rises between 2020 and 2023 (e.g., +100 % and +83.4 %). Notably, in countries like Thailand, initially target

Survival under armed conflict: displacement, dialysis continuity, and financial burden among hemodialysis patients in Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis are highly vulnerable during armed conflict, particularly when healthcare systems are disrupted. However, factors associated with survival under prolonged disruption remain poorly understood. This study examined survival and key associated factors among hemodialysis patients during the armed conflict in Sudan. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 158 adults receiving maintenance hemodialysis in Khartoum, Sudan, at the onset of the April 2023 conflict, with follow-up extending up to 18 months. Outcomes were confirmed for

Accessibility of day-night emergency alert systems for Deaf and hard-of-hearing adults during armed conflict.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities, including Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) individuals, face disproportionate disaster risks due to communication barriers. Emergency alert systems are predominantly auditory-based, limiting their effectiveness for DHH populations. This gap is especially critical during armed conflict, where timely alerts can be life-saving. OBJECTIVE: This study examined emergency alert system accessibility and associated psychological distress among DHH adults during active armed conflict. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Israel (October-November

How armed conflict shapes women's family planning and abortion uptake and decision-making: a scoping review.

Armed conflict profoundly affects women's sexual and reproductive health and rights, yet the pathways through which conflict shapes family planning and abortion uptake and decision-making remain insufficiently understood. This scoping review aimed to identify and map the available evidence on how armed conflict influences women's use of, access to, and decisions about family planning and abortion in conflict-affected settings. Following JBI guidance and -ScR reporting standards, searches were conducted in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and Embase for peer-reviewed articles published in English

A population-level analysis of armed conflict and diphtheria at the subnational level in the WHO African Region 2017-2024.

BACKGROUND: Diphtheria has been re-emerging around the world at alarming rates, raising concerns about emergency preparedness, especially when global supplies of life-saving diphtheria antitoxin are insufficient. Outbreaks have occurred in areas with suboptimal coverage of the three-dose diphtheria tetanus and pertussis (DTP3) vaccine and regions experiencing conflict, but systematic studies assessing the association between these variables and the risk of diphtheria emergence are limited. This population-level study investigated the relationship between fatalities from armed conflict, childho

Leaving no one behind in armed conflict-affected settings of Africa: is universal health coverage a possibility or mirage?

The world is off track six years to the 2030 deadline for attaining the sustainable development goals and universal health coverage. This is particularly evident in Africa's armed conflict-affected and humanitarian settings, where pervasively weak health systems, extreme poverty and inequitable access to the social dimensions and other determinants of health continue to pose significant challenges to universal health coverage. In this article, we review the key issues and main barriers to universal health coverage in such settings. While our review shows that the current health service deliver
