Expression of elongation factor-1 gamma-related sequence in human pancreatic cancer.

A cDNA clone designated pPDC-1 was isolated from a cDNA library prepared against poly(A+)RNA isolated from the human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell line, Capan-2. The cDNA corresponds to a 1.7-kilobase mRNA that is expressed at higher levels in seven of nine pancreatic tumors than in their corresponding normal tissues. It is also expressed in normal human kidney, intestine, pancreas, stomach, placenta, lung, brain, spleen, and liver. A computer search of the Intelligenetics System of all available nucleotide sequences revealed a 60% homology between the nucleotide sequence of the pPDC-1 cDNA a

Ecotoxicity of oilfield production chemicals and their mitigation by activated carbon adsorption and UV photolysis.

Produced water (PW) represents the largest wastewater stream in offshore oil and gas production, often containing chemical additives that cause significant ecological risks upon discharge. This study evaluated the acute and chronic toxicity of seven PW additives at operational dosages using Artemia sp. (acute) and embryos of the sea urchins Echinometra lucunter and Arbacia lixula (chronic). Furthermore, the effectiveness of activated carbon (AC) adsorption and UV photolysis in mitigating toxicity was investigated. The biocide (2,2-dibromo-3-nitrilopropionamide) was identified as the most hazar

Molecular Mediated Angiogenesis and Vasculogenesis Networks.

By stimulating living tissues with proper molecules, the angiogenesis and vasculogenesis processes can be observed. Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which is a molecule that widens blood vessels and which is used for several medical purposes, such as treating critical limb ischemia, is a typical leading molecule in angiogenesis studies. Nevertheless, its involvement in vasculogenesis and morphogenesis is a more specific subject in the field of developmental biology and therapeutic research. Vasculogenesis is the embryonic phenomenon in which endothelial progenitor cells generate new blood vessels. Thi

Synthesis and Toxicity Evaluation of New Pyrroles Obtained by the Reaction of Activated Alkynes with 1-Methyl-3-(cyanomethyl)benzimidazolium Bromide.

A series of new pyrrole derivatives were designed as chemical analogs of the 1,4-dihydropyridines drugs in order to develop future new calcium channel blockers. The new tri- and tetra-substituted N-arylpyrroles were synthesized by the one-pot reaction of 1-methyl-3-cyanomethyl benzimidazolium bromide with substituted alkynes having at least one electron-withdrawing substituent, in 1,2-epoxybutane, acting both as the solvent and reagent to generate the corresponding benzimidazolium N3-ylide. The structural characterization of the new substituted pyrroles was based on IR, NMR spectroscopy as wel

Early Transition to Microdiets Improves Growth, Reproductive Performance and Reduces Skeletal Anomalies in Zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Zebrafish is a model species with a high variability of feeding regimes among fish facilities. The use of live feeds for early life stages is a common practice, and few studies have focused early weaning into microdiets. The lack of standardized feeding protocols among research facilities promotes discrepancies in biological performances, and few studies relate dietary regimes to zebrafish development. The objective of this work was to assess the effect of an early transition into microdiets in zebrafish development by evaluating growth, survival, reproductive performance, and skeletal anomali

Non-lethal heat shock increases tolerance to metal exposure in brine shrimp.

Pollution and temperature increase are two of the most important stressors that aquatic organisms are facing. Exposure to elevated temperatures and metal contamination both induce heat shock proteins (HSPs), which may thus be involved in the induced cross-tolerance in various organisms. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that exposure to a non-lethal heat shock (NLHS) causes an increased tolerance to subsequent metal exposure. Using gnotobiotic cultures of the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana, the tolerance to Cd and Zn acute exposures was tested after a prior NLHS treatment (30min exposu

Biofouling inhibition by Staphylococcus aureus extracts and their potential use for paints.

For the control of biofouling, some paints based on compounds that are toxic to marine organisms have been used. There is an intensive search for biodegradable solutions that are friendly to non-target organisms. Bacteria have been shown to be a source of compounds with antifouling potential. In this work, the antifouling activity of a strain of Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated. Extracts activity against biofilm-forming bacteria and the toxicity against Artemia franciscana were evaluated. The extracts were incorporated in a hard gel and a paint matrix, and they were exposed to the sea. In b

Effect of Early Peptide Diets on Zebrafish Skeletal Development.

Incorporation of dietary peptides has been correlated with decreased presence of skeletal abnormalities in marine larvae. In an attempt to clarify the effect of smaller protein fractions on fish larval and post-larval skeleton, we designed three isoenergetic diets with partial substitution of their protein content with 0% (C), 6% (P6) and 12% (P12) shrimp di- and tripeptides. Experimental diets were tested in zebrafish under two regimes, with inclusion (ADF-Artemia and dry feed) or lack (DF-dry feed only) of live food. Results at the end of metamorphosis highlight the beneficial effect of P12

Insights on the criteria of selection of vegetable and mineral dielectric fluids used in power transformers on the basis of their biodegradability and toxicity assessments.

Leakage of transformer dielectric fluids is a concern because it may pose a risk of environmental contamination. In this study, the deleterious effects of vegetable and mineral dielectric fluids in water bodies were investigated using biodegradability and acute toxicity tests with Danio rerio and Artemia salina. Regarding biodegradability, all four tested vegetable oils (soy, canola, sunflower and crambe) were considered as easily biodegradable, presenting degradation rates significantly higher than the Lubrax-type mineral fluid. Acute toxicity tests were performed in two separate experiments

Trophic Antioxidant Transfer as a Measure for Scalable Coral Conservation Strategies.

Coral reefs are increasingly threatened by elevated seawater temperatures associated with heatwaves and El Niño events. These phenomena challenge conventional management practices, highlighting an urgent need for innovative interventions to enhance reef resilience. Investigating the role of oxidative stress-one of the main explanations for coral bleaching-is central to these efforts, as excessive production of reactive oxygen species can impair coral physiology, disrupt the coral-algal symbiosis, and ultimately lead to mortality. Here, we investigated an antioxidant-rich food web approach by f
