Camera-based monitoring of arthropods is an emerging tool for studying activity, abundance, and behavior. However, many current approaches rely on custom-built camera systems and complex analytical workflows, which limit accessibility and broader adoption. In addition, most arthropod camera-monitoring systems image subjects against uniform backgrounds, conditions that may alter natural activity patterns and reduce ecological realism. Here, we present a camera-monitoring workflow designed to increase accessibility by using commercially available game cameras coupled with a streamlined image-pro

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-bound nanoparticles secreted by cells that are involved in multiple forms of intercellular communication and show promising potential for biotechnological applications. Arthropod-derived EV research remains relatively fragmented in contrast to the extensively studied mammalian EV field. In this review, we present a comprehensive synthesis of over 100 studies exploring EV biology across arthropods - including insects, arachnids and crustaceans. Specifically, we summarise the key proteins involved in EV biogenesis and trafficking and provide an overview

Spiders are mostly harmless, yet they often trigger high levels of both fear and disgust, and arachnophobia (the phobia of spiders) ranks among the most common specific animal phobias. To investigate this apparent paradox, we turned to the only close relatives of spiders that pose a real danger to humans: scorpions. We adopted a unique methodology in order to assess authentic emotions elicited by arthropods. Over 300 respondents were asked to rate live specimens of 62 arthropod species (including spiders, scorpions, cockroaches, and other insects) based on perceived fear, disgust, and beauty.

Globins are small heme-proteins that reversibly bind oxygen. Their most prominent roles in vertebrates are the transport and storage of O2 for oxidative energy metabolism, but recent research has suggested alternative, non-respiratory globin functions. In the species-rich and ecologically highly diverse taxon of arthropods, the copper-containing hemocyanin is considered the main respiratory protein. However, recent studies have suggested the presence of globin genes and their proteins in arthropod taxa, including model species like Drosophila. To systematically assess the taxonomic distributio

We examine how the distribution of a leafgalling aphid (Pemphigus betae) affects other species associated with natural stands of hybrid cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia x P. fremontii). Aphid transfers on common-garden clones and RFLP analysis show that resistance to aphids in cottonwoods is affected by plant genotype. Because susceptible trees typically support thousands of galls, while adjacent resistant trees have few or none, plant resistance traits that affect the distribution of this abundant herbivore may directly and/or indirectly affect other species. We found that the arthropod comm

Between January 1995 and December 1996 nonendemic or only regionally occurring arthropodborne parasites including ehrlichiae and parasitic arthropods in Germany were detected in 484 dogs, whereby at least 15 species were involved. Listed in decreasing order, Leishmania infections occurred most frequently, followed by infections/infestations with Babesia canis, Ehrlichia canis, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Dirofilaria immitis and Dermacentor reticulatus. The other species, namely Babesia gibsoni, Trypanosoma congolense, Hepatozoon canis, Ehrlichia platys, Dirofilaria repens, Dipetalonema reconditu

Allergic reactions associated with arthropod bites are a growing concern worldwide. In particular, Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS) is a red meat allergy associated with IgE antibodies against galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-Gal) that is typically linked to tick bites, but other arthropods with alpha-Gal content may also induce allergic reactions. The AGS is underdiagnosed and thus important to evaluate the risks that may be associated with exposure to bites of arthropods with alpha-Gal. To approach this objective, herein are described the materials and methods for the detection of alpha-Gal cont

Prior to 1993, Bartonella bacilliformis was the only member of the Bartonella genus. Now, the genus Bartonella currently contains over 30 species of Gram-negative bacteria that parasitize mammalian erythrocytes and endothelial cells. Bartonella spp. have been isolated from a variety of mammal species, most often from rodents, ruminants and carnivores, and these animals are implicated as reservoirs for the genus Bartonella. The persistent bacteriemia is more readily documented in the primary reservoir species and may occur less frequently or to a much lower lever in accidental hosts. In the nat

Transmission of the entomopathogenic fungus Pandora neoaphidis to the nettle aphid Microlophium carnosum was assessed in the presence of arthropods that co-exist with the fungus within the habitat but do not compete for aphid hosts. The presence of a parasitoid significantly enhanced transmission, and transmission rates were similar for both enemy and non-enemy parasitoids. Although herbivory of nettle leaves by Peacock butterfly (Inchis io) caterpillars indirectly reduced the number of M. carnosum by >30% due to a reduction in leaf area for feeding, the addition of I. io significantly increas

The newly obtained data supplemented our knowledge about risk for travellers, tourists and natives of Europe connected with malaria, leishmaniasis and other tropical diseases. It was discovered that healthy carriers of Epstein-Barr virus (nearly 90% of human population) have a great risk to get chronic Burkitt lymphoma disease as a result of Plasmodium falciparum (tropical malaria agent) infection. HIV carriers being occasionally in contact with visceral leishmaniasis vectors (sand-flies infected on dogs in the Mediterranean area) not only got a heavy form of disease but became a source of inf

Insects and other arthropods appear in pharmacopoeias of Korean traditional medicine, but little was known about their use in modern South Korea. Interviews were conducted with 20 traditional medicine doctors at clinics in South Korea's Kyeong Dong Shijang in Seoul--one of the world's largest traditional drug markets--to learn about current patterns of usage. Seventeen products are prescribed and the use of arthropod drugs is stable or increasing. Centipedes (Scolopendra spp.) used primarily to treat arthritis and the silk moth fungus (Beauveria bassiana, which infects silk moth larvae) used m

The blood feeding habit, especially among opportunist feeders such as tabanids and Stomoxys is known to result in transmission of diseases for which the vectors are not the obligate or alternate hosts. Thus, mechanical transmission of trypanosomes such as T. vivax can occur in cattle herds outside tsetse fly areas where tabanids are actively feeding. In the case of Yaws, mechanical transmission of the spirochaetes by eye flies (Hippelates pallipes) in the West Indies is thought to be most likely. The spirochaetes remain motile in the pharynx and oesophageal diverticula for several hours but ar

Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of humans and animals, using it as their sole source of food. Due to their lifestyle, ticks at each life stage transmit various tick-borne pathogens while feeding on their hosts. Unlike mosquitoes - another important group of pathogen-transmitting arthropods - ticks can feed on the same host for prolonged periods, which underscores the importance of tick mechanisms that inhibit or reduce the host's defence mechanisms and, consequently, allow the transmission of pathogens. This unique tick-host-pathogen triangle requires the involvement of various tick

Rickettsia felis is an emerging etiological agent of rickettsioses worldwide. The cosmopolitan cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is the primary vector of R. felis, but R. felis has also been reported in other species of hematophagous arthropods including ticks and mosquitoes. Canines can serve as a bacteremic host to infect fleas under laboratory conditions, yet isolation of R. felis from the blood of a vertebrate host in nature has not been realized. Cofeeding transmission is an efficient mechanism for transmitting rickettsiae between infected and uninfected fleas; however, the mechanism of tr

The aim of our study was to detect the presence of Rickettsia spp. and Bartonella spp. in ticks and fleas collected from red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) in southeastern France during 2008. Using a genus-specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay, which was followed by a species-specific qPCR assay for the positive samples, 45.2% (33/73) of ticks (Rhipicephalus turanicus) were found to be infected with Rickettsia massiliae. 10.5% (2/19) of the fleas (Archaeopsylla erinacei) collected in the study tested positive for Rickettsia felis. A genus-specific qPCR assay did not reveal any Bartonella species in an

Many plants respond to herbivory by arthropods with an induced emission of volatiles such as green leaf volatiles and terpenoids. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) can attract carnivores, for example, predators and parasitoids. We investigated the significance of terpenoids in attracting herbivores and carnivores in two tritrophic systems where we manipulated the terpenoid emission by treating the plants with fosmidomycin, which inhibits one of the terpenoid biosynthetic pathways and consequently terpenoid emission. In the 'lima bean' system, volatiles from spider-mite-infested f
