Diagnostic arthroscopy was performed in 174 consecutive patients under the age of 18 years. Eight arthroscopies were bilateral. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed in only three of 17 knees in children under aged 14 years and in 44 per cent of the knees in older children. The most commonly disproved diagnoses were torn meniscus and chondromalacia patella. Arthroscopy seldom changed the diagnosis in cases of osteochondritis dissecans. In 38 per cent of the knees, arthroscopy revealed no surgical treatable abnormality, and unnecessary arthrotomy was avoided. Arthroscopy in acute hemarthrosis re

The technique and results of 11 arthroscopies of the ankle joint are presented. The main indications were post-traumatic pain and osteochondritis dissecans of the talus. As a result of arthroscopy, a radionegative loose body was found, exploratory arthrotomy was avoided in one case, incisions and operative procedures were changed, and loose bodies were removed by arthroscopic operation in one case.

Sixty-six patients were reviewed after 70 therapeutic arthroscopy procedures. The procedures carried out included partial meniscectomy, removal of loose bodies, lateral release and synovial plica division. The commonest procedure performed was partial meniscectomy. The 32 patients undergoing arthroscopic meniscectomy were compared with a similar group of patients undergoing open meniscectomy as regards their duration of hospital stay, operation time and rehabilitation.

This paper describes transcutaneous therapeutic procedures performed during arthroscopy. Sixty-six patients were treated. Small loose bodies were flushed out through the arthroscope in 7 cases. In 19 of 24 knees a loose body 0.5-2 cm in size was extracted either with a Dormia stone-dislodger or a pituitary rongeur. In 5 patients we failed to remove the loose body transcutaneously and arthrotomy was performed. A meniscus was resected in 17 patients using a pituitary rongeur alone or in combination with some other instrument. The late result was good in 14, but 3 subsequently underwent arthrotom

The clinical usefulness of arthroscopies of the knee joint has been evaluated on the basis of 282 examinations. The procedures were performed under general anesthesia with sterility precautions as for arthrotomy. In nearly all cases, direct observation of articular surfaces, synovial membranes and the menisci of the ventral two thirds of the joint was possible. The dorsal recessus, the posterior third of medial meniscus, the posterior cruciate and Baker's cyst could not be inspected. The diagnostic accuracy of arthroscopy was compared with that of double contrast arthrography. The results are

This systematic review aimed to summarize the full range of complications reported following ankle arthroscopy and the frequency at which they occur. A computer-based search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Emcare, and ISI Web of Science. Two-stage title/abstract and full-text screening was performed independently by two reviewers. English-language original research studies reporting perioperative complications in a cohort of at least ten patients undergoing ankle arthroscopy were included. Complications were pooled across included studies in order to derive an overall complication rate. Quali

We describe the use of intraoperative ultrasound for the safe development of arthroscopic portals during hip arthroscopy without the requirement for fluoroscopy. We find this technique consistently accurate, allowing the safe introduction of arthroscopic instruments into the hip with a very low rate of iatrogenic injury. We have further developed the technique for application to both central- and peripheral-compartment procedures. We now have a total experience of more than 700 procedures to date. With the described technique of ultrasound guidance for portal placement, fluoroscopy is required

PURPOSE: the purpose of this article was to systematically analyze the results of published studies in the literature which evaluated the use of arthroscopically assisted techniques in intra-articular fracture fixation.
METHODS: published investigations to date were analyzed by classifying them according to joints that were involved with intra-articular fractures including: knee, ankle, hip, shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. The results were studied to assess the feasibility, efficiency, and outcomes of arthroscopy-assisted fracture fixation.
RESULTS: arthroscopy-assisted techniques have be

Fluid extravasation is not uncommon after shoulder arthroscopy. We report a case of massive fluid extravasation that resulted in rhabdomyolysis and renal shutdown following routine shoulder arthroscopic surgery. Compartment pressures in the deltoid, supraspinatus, and infraspinatus were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder revealed extensive subcutaneous edema and high-signal changes in the entire deltoid muscle. The patient made an uneventful recovery with adequate supportive treatment and renal dialysis. Repeat imaging studies 3 months later revealed complete restoration to nor

Extra-articular elbow arthroscopy has to be considered as the evolution of the elbow surgery to a mini invasive endoscopically assisted surgery developed by the recent advance of the elbow arthroscopy. Various pathologies, such as lateral epicondylitis, ulnar nerve entrapment, distal Biceps tendon rupture, synovial cysts, or olecranon bursitis have been treated arthroscopically. Extra-articular pathologies can be treated through an intra-articular endoscopic approach. The true endoscopic extra-articular technique is proced through a real anatomical space or inside a space of work created de no

We studied 95 patients who underwent knee Arthroscopy under local anaesthesia between JANUARY 1995 till 1997. Materials used were 1% Xylocaine and 0.25% Bupivacaine of 20 mls each combined with midazolam 2 mg and IV pethidine 30 mgm for sedation. The patients were attached to monitors (pulse Oxymeter, ECG and BP and pulse recorders) and blood less field was created using a tornquet. The procedures lasted about 45 minutes. 90 out of 95 patients completed the procedures successfully without any complications. 2 developed respiratory embarrassments and were intubated and ventilated. 3 procedures

Shoulder arthroscopy is a versatile method for treating a variety of shoulder pathologies in a minimally invasive manner. Typically, it is performed with the patient positioned in a beach-chair or lateral decubitus position with the latter being conventionally preferred for shoulder instability work given the use of traction and creation of a distracted joint. This allows ideal visualization and accessibility of the anterior, inferior, and posterior aspects of the glenoid, labrum, and axillary pouch. Despite the apparent advantages, the lateral decubitus position comes with its own technical c

The utilization of subtalar joint arthroscopy in intra-articular calcaneal fractures provides optimal visualization of articular surfaces for a more precise anatomical reduction, thus yielding better surgical outcomes. Current literature shows good functional and radiographic outcomes, fewer wound complications, and low incidence of post-traumatic arthritis with this technique than when utilizing an isolated lateral extensile incision of the calcaneus. As subtalar joint arthroscopy continues to grow in popularity and technological advancement, patients may benefit when surgeons incorporate thi

BACKGROUND: The needle scope is a less invasive intervention to evaluate carpal pathology. We hypothesize that there is no difference in the evaluation and diagnostic capability of the needle scope versus the conventional wrist arthroscope.
METHODS: Twenty patients indicated for wrist arthroscopy were prospectively enrolled. Prior to insertion of the 2.7-mm arthroscope, the needle scope evaluated for synovitis; cartilage damage (location and modified Outerbridge classification); integrity of the volar, scapholunate (SL), and lunotriquetral ligaments; and the triangular fibrocartilage complex

Hip arthroscopy has evolved significantly over the last 5 to 10 years. With this comes the burden of patients with continued pain after their index procedure. Reasons for the need for revision surgery can be many, including incomplete resection of impingement morphology, unrecognized/unaddressed acetabular dysplasia or hip instability, failure to manage the soft tissue appropriately (i.e., labrum or capsule/ligament), or other unrecognized cause of pain, like femoral retroversion or subspine impingement. Like many other orthopaedic procedures, revision hip arthroscopy with or without a defect
