16p11.2 deletion and duplication: Characterizing neurologic phenotypes in a large clinically ascertained cohort.

Chromosome 16p11.2 deletions and duplications are among the most frequent genetic etiologies of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders, but detailed descriptions of their neurologic phenotypes have not yet been completed. We utilized standardized examination and history methods to characterize a neurologic phenotype in 136 carriers of 16p11.2 deletion and 110 carriers of 16p11.2 duplication-the largest cohort to date of uniformly and comprehensively characterized individuals with the same 16p copy number variants (CNVs). The 16p11.2 deletion neurologic phenotype

Articulation error of children with adenoid hypertrophy.

PURPOSE: Adenoid hypertrophy is a physical alteration that may affect speech, and a speech disorder can have other negative effects on a child's life. Airway obstruction leads to constricted oral breathing and causes postural alterations of several oro-facial structures, including the mouth, tongue, and hyoid bone. The postural modifications may affect several aspects of speech production. METHODS: In this study, we compared articulation errors in 19 children with adenoid hypertrophy (subject group) to those of 33 children with functional articulation disorders independent of anatomical probl

Addition of contingency management to increase home practice in young children with a speech sound disorder.

BACKGROUND: Along with the severity of the disorder, the motivation of the children and their parents is an important element in explaining the extensive variance in therapeutic success. There is consensus that parental cooperation and homework are important for successful therapy. Systematic investigation into the effects of including homework in therapy is lacking, as are methodological approaches to increasing parental involvement. AIMS: The aim was to determine whether the efficiency of traditional articulation therapy for children with speech-sound disorders can be improved by adding a b

[Hypercondylia and lateral deviations of the mandible (author's transl)].

Hypercondylia is a relative rare, benign affection presenting as asymmetry of the lower facial region with laterognathia, dental articulation disorders, and minimal functional effects on the temporomandibular joints. These clinical manifestations, confirmed by the presence of lesions of the condylar region on radiological examination, vary as a function of the directional axis and course of the hyperplasia. Various distinct and sometimes extremely different radioclinical pictures can therefore be distinguished. Therapy aims at re-establishing facial harmony and restoring altered dental articul

Delayed primary palatal closure in resource-poor countries: Speech results in Ugandan older children and young adults with cleft (lip and) palate.

AIMS: Unrepaired clefts still regularly occur in resource-poor countries as a result of limited health-care access. The purpose of the present study was to report resonance, airflow and articulation characteristics following delayed (≥8years) primary palatal closure. METHODS: Fifteen Ugandan participants with cleft (lip and) palate (CP±L) were included as well as 15 age- and gender-matched Ugandan subjects without clefts. Palatal closure was performed at a mean age of 15;10 years using the Sommerlad technique. Speech evaluations were carried out on a single occasion postoperatively (mean age:

A Networking of Community-Based Speech Therapy: Borabue District, Maha Sarakham.

BACKGROUND: Most children with cleft lip and palate have articulation problems because of compensatory articulation disorders from velopharyngeal insufficiency. Theoretically, children should receive speech therapy from a speech and language pathologist (SLP) 1-2 sessions per week. For developing countries, particularly Thailand, most of them cannot reach standard speech services because of limitation of speech services and SLP Networking of a Community-Based Speech Model might be an appropriate way to solve this problem. OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of a networking of Khon Kaen Univ

Articulation rate in preschool children: a 3-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Speaking rate has implications for both clinical practice and an understanding of normal and disordered communication processes. Fundamental information on speaking rate is required by the clinician for the appropriate management of those disorders with disturbances of rate or those in which rate modification strategies are applied. One measure of speaking rate, articulation rate, excludes pause time and measures the speed with which articulators move. A developmental assessment of articulation rate is of particular interest because of its implications for changes in temporal motor

Nonverbal Oro-Motor Exercises: Do They Really Work for Phonoarticulatory Difficulties?

Articulation disorders are deficiencies in the realization of speech sounds unrelated to organic or neurological disorders. Over the last decade, there has been a debate on the efficiency of non-verbal oro-motor exercises, which are orofacial movements programmed and organized in an intentional and coordinated way to control lips, tongue, and soft palate muscles. Of the 122 children evaluated, 52 presented articulatory difficulties. An intervention with nonverbal oro-motor exercises was applied, and children were again assessed following treatment. The results showed no differences between the

The effect of velopharyngeal insufficiency on voice quality in Estonian Children with Cleft Palate.

Most children born with cleft palate (CP) or cleft lip and palate (CL/P) have velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), some degree of hypernasal resonance, articulation disorders and laryngeal dysphonia. Combination of different CL/P specific problems may mask laryngeal dysphonia and therefore, it may remain undiagnosed and untreated by clinicians. The research aimed to study the effect of VPI on voice quality in Estonian CL/P children. We included 18 CL/P and 79 healthy children. Combination of objective (Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP)) and subjective (Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI)

[A preliminary study on the consonant articulation of older patients with cleft palate].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the consonant pronunciation characteristics of older unoperated cleft palate patients. METHODS: One hundred unoperated cleft palate patients (more than 8 years old) were included. Subjective speech assessment was delivered to each patient. The incidence and distribution of varies consonant misarticulation errors consisting of manners and places of articulation were summarized. RESULTS: Consonant misarticulation existed among 86% of all cases. Compensatory misarticulation was observed in 66% patients, while 14% patients demonstrated completely normal articulation. Th

Modification of articulation error using a multiple-context, distinctive-feature treatment program.

This study describes a distinctive feature approach to remediating articulation disorders which, rather than relying upon across-phoneme generalization, incorporates all phonemes exhibiting a specific feature. Comparison is made to an approach which relies upon generalization. Clinical implications are discussed.

Modifications in deaf children's vowel production: perceptual evidence.

This study examined the perceived changes in vowel articulation by profoundly deaf children as a function of the method of teaching: with visual feedback provided by the Computer Vowel Trainer (CVT) vs conventional methods. The assessment carried out by experienced listeners consisted in marking the sounds heard on the vowel quadrilateral. It was found that changes in perception were feedback and age dependent: younger children taught with the CVT were perceived as displaying more mobility in articulation and they approximated more closely the target vowels than their control counterparts or o

A further analysis for developmental apraxia of speech in children with defective articulation.

This paper reports a further analysis of behaviors that might distinguish developmental apraxia of speech from "functional" defective articulation. Closely following a study of Yoss and Darley, 30 children with moderately-to-severely defective articulation but with normal hearing, intelligence, and language development and with no apparent organic etiology for their disability were matched with a normal-speaking control group. Both groups were given Yoss and Darley's battery of speech and nonspeech tasks. Yoss and Darley's analysis procedure was applied to the data. Their finding of significan
