Digestive cancers and occupational asbestos exposure: incidence study in a cohort of asbestos plant workers.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to estimate the incidence of digestive cancers within a cohort of asbestos-exposed workers. METHODS: Our study was based on a cohort of 2024 participants occupationally exposed to asbestos. The incidence of digestive cancers was calculated from 1 January 1978 to 31 December 2009 and compared with levels among the local general population using Standardised Incidence Ratios (SIRs). Asbestos exposure was assessed using the company's job-exposure matrix. RESULTS: 119 cases of digestive cancer were observed within our cohort, for an expected number of 77 (SIR=

Sex differences in asbestos exposure.

BACKGROUND: Although the association between exposure to asbestos and malignant mesothelioma has been established, occupational exposure has been historically present in males, while the ascertainment of female exposures is more nuanced. We reviewed the literature to assess differences in environmental exposure in mesothelioma cases according to sex. METHODS: A new PubMed search was conducted with the key words "mesothelioma" and "environmental exposure" on October 11, 2024 with a start date of January 1, 2016, to supplement our previous qualitative review that included publications up throug

Asbestos exposure and autoantibody titers.

BACKGROUND: Asbestos is a well-known hazardous substance that causes occupational and environmental diseases including asbestosis (lung fibrosis). Silica exposure which causes silicosis (another type of lung fibrosis) has long been linked to the development of autoimmune diseases; however, there are few studies on the relationship between asbestos exposure and autoimmune diseases. METHODS: A total of 54 individuals who had worked in a former asbestos textile factory underwent autoantibody-related blood tests, chest X-ray imaging, and pulmonary function tests. Based on the job exposure matrix

Asbestos-worker exposure, family disease.

Family members, mostly female, can be at risk of asbestos-related disease as a result of the transfer of asbestos from the workplace to the home on the hair, boots and clothes of the worker. It is argued that in these cases the home should be recognised as an extension of the workplace and that the employer has a duty of care to contain and control the asbestos. Given these circumstances, the family member with the disease should be entitled to cover under the Accidence Compensation Legislation.

Asbestos-related disease in upholsterers.

Before its use was banned in developed countries, asbestos was widely applied in upholstery. However, the risk of asbestos diseases among upholsterers has only rarely been reported. In this case series, we present a first series of 6 workers employed in small workshops who developed several asbestos-related diseases, including pleural plaques, pleural fibrosis, and asbestosis. Exposures were intermittent and difficult to quantify, but lung asbestos content assessed by bronchoalveolar lavage was high in the 3 patients evaluated. In conclusion, upholstery work should be considered an at-risk occ

Asbestos-related diffuse pleural thickening.

BACKGROUND: The clinical features of asbestos-related diffuse pleural thickening (DPT) remain unclear. OBJECTIVES: To clarify the association between radiological findings of DPT and respiratory function. METHODS: Medical data from patients with asbestos-related DPT were collected, including their history of occupational or neighborhood asbestos exposure, initial symptoms, modified Medical Research Council dyspnea grade, smoking history, radiological findings, and respiratory function test results. RESULTS: There were 106 DPT patients between 2005 and 2010 [i.e. 103 men (97.2%) and 3 women

Nonpulmonary outcomes of asbestos exposure.

The adverse pulmonary effects of asbestos are well accepted in scientific circles. However, the extrapulmonary consequences of asbestos exposure are not as clearly defined. In this review the potential for asbestos to produce diseases of the peritoneum, immune, gastrointestinal (GIT), and reproductive systems are explored as evidenced in published, peer-reviewed literature. Several hundred epidemiological, in vivo, and in vitro publications analyzing the extrapulmonary effects of asbestos were used as sources to arrive at the conclusions and to establish areas needing further study. In order t

Pericardial mesothelioma and asbestos exposure.

Pericardial mesothelioma (PM) accounts for 0.7% of all malignant mesotheliomas. Although asbestos exposure is a recognized etiological factor for pleural and peritoneal mesotheliomas, its role in the development of PM is controversial. The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of PM cases occurred in Lombardy, a highly industrialized Region of Northern Italy. From the Lombardy Mesothelioma Registry we selected the incident cases of PM registered in the Lombardy Region between 2000 and 2009 and we abstracted clinical characteristics and history of asbestos exposure. We identified

[Expectations after ban on asbestos].

This article brings a brief review of asbestos exposure and asbestos-related diseases in Croatia in view of the asbestos ban. The first cases of asbestosis were diagnosed in workers from an asbestos-cement factory in 1961. Between 1990 and 2007, 403 cases of asbestosis had been registered as occupational disease: 300 with parenchymal fibrosis and the rest with parenchymal and pleural changes, or pleural plaques. As a rule, asbestos-related changes were diagnosed at an early stage thanks to regular checkups of the exposed workers. Pleural plaques, considered to be the consequence of asbestos ex

[Benign asbestos-related pleuropulmonary diseases].

Among the non malignant diseases related to asbestos exposure, pleural plaques are the most frequent. Pleural effusion and diffuse pleural thickening, as well as asbestosis, are uncommon nowadays in asbestos-exposed screened populations. Despite the absence of any useful treatment, accurate diagnoses of these diseases are needed for two reasons: on the one hand in order to save patients from anxiety related to diagnostic and prognostic discrepancies, and on the other hand in order to ensure a proper attribution of the high social and financial compensations which are provided in France for asb

Asbestos exposure and laryngeal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To carry out a systematic review of the evidence relating asbestos exposure to the risk of laryngeal cancer. METHOD: All identified studies of asbestos workers providing data on laryngeal disease were reviewed, together with studies of laryngeal cancers giving epidemiological or experimental evidence of associated exposures. RESULTS: Confounding due to smoking and alcohol intake, and to a lesser extent diet and socio-economic factors, creates a major difficulty over the identification of any asbestos or other occupational effect. Not only are smoking and alcohol independently asso

[Non-malignant asbestos-related diseases].

Non malignant asbestos diseases are dominated numerically by pleural plaques. This form of circumscribed fibrosis of the parietal pleural is generally asymptomatic and its potential for evolution is weak. More rarely diffuse pleural fibrosis results from disease of the visceral pleura with a secondary fusion of the two pleural layers. Usually it follows a pleural effusion which resolves spontaneously. Its functional effects are sometimes important. The generalised practice of computerized tomographic scanning as a work up for asbestos related disease has revealed the frequent association of th

Pulmonary complications of asbestos exposure.

Except for benign pleural effusion, asbestos-related pulmonary complications, including asbestosis, malignant mesothelioma and bronchogenic carcinoma, usually occur more than 20 years after exposure. Pleural plaques and pleural thickening serve as markers for asbestos exposure, but they are not associated with an increased risk of malignancy. Clinical criteria for the diagnosis of asbestosis include a reliable history of asbestos exposure, an appropriate interval between exposure and disease detection, radiographic evidence of pulmonary fibrosis, decreased vital capacity and diffusing capacity

Biochemical mechanisms in asbestos toxicity.

The alarming hazardous nature of asbestos makes it the foremost among toxic fugitive dusts. The biochemical mechanisms responsible for the diverse biological effects of asbestos, such as fibrosis, asbestos bodies, pleural plaques, respiratory difficulty, cancer, and cytotoxicity, are being studied in this laboratory. As asbestosis progresses in guinea pigs, along with reticulum formation, lysosomal enzymes are released from membrane-bound latent state to active free form, initiating degradative changes. Considerable alterations take place in the pulmonary metabolic machinery. Mitochondria in l

Asbestos bodies in bronchoalveolar lavage.

Asbestos bodies (AB) were counted in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid from 62 patients with suspected asbestos related diseases, 2 patients with known exposure to asbestos but without related disease, and 40 control subjects. BAL fluid contained AB in all patients with obvious exposure (28 of 28), including the 2 without related disease, in most patients with suspected exposure (26 of 28), as well as in 5 of 8 patients without known exposure but with suspicion of asbestos related disease (mesothelioma or pleural plaques). Among the 40 control subjects, the results in 5 were positive but to a

Non-malignant asbestos pleural disease.

During a 10-year period (1970-79) all patients in Uppsala County found to have pleural changes related to asbestos exposure were followed. The lesions could be divided into four types: parietal pleural plaques, exudative pleurisy, thickening of the visceral pleura, and progressive pleural fibrosis. There were 891 cases. The most common type was parietal plaques, which was seen in 827 patients, some of whom later developed other changes. In 22 types exudation was proven radiologically, and in 84 more cases obliteration of the costo-phrenic angle was seen. The exudations almost all had a benign
