Multicomponent mineral-phytogenic supplementation reduces Ascaridia galli shedding and systemic mycotoxin biomarkers while improving health and productive performance in laying hens.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Gastrointestinal helminthiasis and dietary mycotoxin exposure can concurrently impair poultry health and productivity, whereas conventional control strategies generally target these challenges separately. This study evaluated whether a multicomponent mineral-phytogenic supplement could simultaneously reduce Ascaridia galli shedding and systemic mycotoxin exposure while improving hematological, hepatic, antioxidant, and productive responses in naturally challenged laying hens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty 26-week-old Lohmann Brown laying hens naturally infected with A. gall

Ascaridia galli eggs obtained from fresh excreta, worm uteri or worms cultured in artificial media differ in embryonation capacity and infectivity.

Ascaridia galli infection models use eggs isolated from chicken excreta, worm uteri and worms cultured in artificial media. The aim of this study was to compare the infectivity of A. galli eggs isolated from these sources under two infection regimens. A 3 × 2 factorial arrangement was employed to test the infectivity of A. galli eggs from the three sources and two modes of infection (single or trickle infection). One hundred and fifty-six Isa-Brown one day-old cockerels randomly assigned to the six treatment groups (n = 26) were orally infected with embryonated A. galli eggs obtained from the

Uptake of Ascaridia galli extracellular vesicles by chicken immune cells varies according to worm sex and in vitro culture duration.

Ascaridia galli (A. galli), a parasitic roundworm that infects chickens poses an economic burden in poultry farming, as it causes ascaridiosis-a disease leading to reduced growth, lower egg production, and immunosuppression. Recently, interest has grown in the parasite's extracellular vesicles (EVs), as they modulate host immune responses and play a key role in host-pathogen interactions. This study aimed to optimize in vitro EV-production from A. galli and assess their uptake by chicken immune cells important for EV mediated host-pathogen communication. Adult worms were collected from infecte

Evaluation of anthelmintic efficacy of ethanolic leaf extract of Juglans regia L. on Ascaridia galli: a comprehensive in vitro and in vivo study.

Anthelmintic resistance in livestock animals has been spreading across the world in prevalence and severity. As a result, researchers are exploring alternative strategies to combat this issue, and one promising avenue is the utilization of medicinal plants. This study aims to investigate the anthelmintic efficacy of the crude ethanolic extract (CEE) derived from the leaves of Juglans regia against one of the most detrimental nematode parasites affecting poultry, namely Ascaridia galli (A. galli). For the in vitro studies, adult A. galli worms were collected from the naturally infected chickens

MHC haplotype and susceptibility to experimental infections (Salmonella Enteritidis, Pasteurella multocida or Ascaridia galli) in a commercial and an indigenous chicken breed.

In three independent experimental infection studies, the susceptibility and course of infection of three pathogens considered of importance in most poultry production systems, Ascaridia galli, Salmonella Enteritidis and Pasteurella multocida were compared in two chicken breeds, the indigenous Vietnamese Ri and the commercial Luong Phuong. Furthermore, the association of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) with disease-related parameters was evaluated, using alleles of the LEI0258 microsatellite as markers for MHC haplotypes. The Ri chickens were found to be more resistant to A. galli an

[Effect of vitamin A and protein levels in the diet of chickens infected with Ascaridia galli on activity of digestive enzymes in pancreas and small intestine].

Hybrid chickens Astra S fed vitamin A deficiency diet containing 11 or 19% protein were infected with 500 invasive eggs of Ascaridia galli. One part of them received vitamin A in a dose corresponding to daily requirement, other part in double dose. After 7 weeks the extensity and intensity of ascaridiosis were determined. In pancreas and intestinal contents the activities of alpha-amylase, lipase and trypsin were measured. The invasion index was the highest in the group of chickens fed the protein and vitamin A deficiency diet. Vitamin A in a requirement dose lowered the parasite index. The re

Dietary inclusion of a fermented rapeseed-seaweed blend alters immunity and intestinal microbial activity but not Ascaridia galli burden in laying hens.

1. Dietary components that are pre-fermented with lactic acid bacteria have recently attracted attention and may positively affect performance and gut health in poultry. This study investigated whether a commercial feed ingredient (EP199), containing fermented rapeseed meal, wheat bran and seaweed, could control worm burden, intestinal microbiota profiles and intestinal fermentation patterns, as well as immune profiles of layers infected with Ascaridia galli.2. A total of 192, 20 week old Bovans Brown laying hens were randomly allocated into four treatment groups; control diet vs. EP199 diet a

Indications of trained innate immunity by Escherichia coli vaccination or chitin feed supplementation assessed during Ascaridia galli infection in chickens.

Infections with the gastrointestinal roundworm Ascaridia galli, cause health problems and economic losses in laying hen husbandry, particularly in organic and free-range systems. This study aimed to evaluate induction of trained innate immunity through priming with a live attenuated Escherichia coli vaccine or chitin supplementation in the feed as a novel approach to mitigate A. galli infection. The study comprised four groups of chickens: chitin-fed (day 1-7 of age), E. coli-vaccinated (day 1 of age), an untreated control group, and a naïve uninfected group. On day 7 of age, the first three g

Ascaridia galli, a common nematode in semiscavenging indigenous chickens in Bangladesh: epidemiology, genetic diversity, pathobiology, ex vivo culture, and anthelmintic efficacy.

Ascaridia galli is the most common nematode in chickens. Ascaridia galli is highly prevalent in chickens reared in scavenging or semiscavenging systems. Here, we studied the epidemiology, pathology, genetic diversity, ex vivo culture protocol and anthelmintic sensitivity of A. galli prevalent in indigenous chickens in Bangladesh. Through morphological study and molecular analyses, the isolated worms were confirmed as A. galli. Of the chickens examined, 45.6% (178 out of 390) were found infected. The male and young chickens were significantly (P < 0.05) more prone to A. galli infection. Prevale

Differential detection of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum eggs in intestinal and caecal excreta of floor-housed laying hens: a longitudinal study.

Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum, the most prevalent nematodes of chickens, inhabit the small intestine and caeca, respectively, and often co-occur. Current excreta egg count (EEC) methods do not differentiate between their eggs, and although chickens produce two distinct excreta types - intestinal excreta (IE) and caecal excreta (CE) - the distribution of eggs of these species across them remains poorly understood. Forty Hy-Line Brown laying hens (40 weeks, mean body weight (BW) 2·07 ± 0·02 kg), cleared of prior nematode infection and artificially infected with A. galli (n = 20) or H.

Establishment of a serodiagnosis system for the detection of Toxocara spp. and Ascaris suum infection in chickens.

Chickens are considered to act as paratenic hosts for agents, Toxocara canis, T. cati and Ascaris suum; which cause ascarid larva migrans syndrome (ascarid LMS) in humans. In addition, they are the definitive host for Ascaridia galli, considered not to be infective for humans. All ascarid parasites can have a high homology of antigenicity, leading to cross-reactivity in serodiagnostic assays. This study was conducted to establish a procedure for the serological detection of those roundworm infections in chickens. Twenty-five male Julia chickens were divided into five groups (n = 5); T. canis-,
