Schizo-obsessive disorder in a South Asian context: A case report highlighting religious obsessions and psychosis.

Background The co-occurrence of schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder has attracted increasing clinical and research attention, yet it is not recognised as a distinct diagnostic entity in current psychiatric classification systems. This overlap is associated with greater symptom severity, increased suicide risk, and poorer treatment outcomes. Despite its clinical relevance, reports from South Asia remain scarce. This case contributes regional data and supports the conceptualisation of a schizo-obsessive subtype, challenging existing nosological boundaries. Case Presentation We report

Rising dengue risk with increasing El Niño-Southern Oscillation amplitude and teleconnections.

Global climate variability has been linked with some of the largest dengue outbreaks, including the record-breaking 2023-2024 epidemic, but the understanding of their mechanism and evidence for their association is lacking. By incorporating reported dengue cases and climate data from 57 countries across the Americas and Asia from 1980 to 2024, we unpacked the global climate teleconnection and quantifying its impact on dengue cases. We revealed that the heterogeneity in the association between global climate variability and dengue cases across regions is affected by the strength and types of gl

Impact of Rotaviral Diarrhea on Child Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia in the Global Enteric Multicenter Study.

Rotavirus is the leading cause of dehydrating diarrhea among children in developing countries. The impact of rotaviral diarrhea on nutritional status is not well understood. We aimed to determine the association between rotavirus-positive moderate-to-severe diarrhea and nutrition in children under 5 years of age. We analyzed data from the Global Enteric Multicenter Study on children 0-59 months old from South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The relationships between explanatory variables and outcome variables were assessed using multiple linear regression; the explanatory variable was the presenc

Large-scale phylogenetic analysis reveals genetic diversity and geographic distribution of rabies virus in South-East and South Asia.

South-East Asia (SEA) and South Asia (SA) are two important geographic regions with the most severe enzootic rabies in the world. In these regions, phylogenetic analysis of rabies virus (RABV) has been conducted only at a country level; the results obtained from different countries are scattered and unequal, with a non-uniform system to name RABV genotypes. Therefore, it is difficult to undertake origin-tracking and compare inter-country RABV evolution and transmission. To avoid the confusion in understanding and to generate a panoramic picture of RABV genetic diversity, distribution, and tran

Thinness, overweight, and obesity in 6- to 9-year-old children from 36 countries: The World Health Organization European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative-COSI 2015-2017.

In 2015-2017, the fourth round of the World Health Organization (WHO) European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) was conducted in 36 countries. National representative samples of children aged 6-9 (203,323) were measured by trained staff, with similar equipment and using a standardized protocol. This paper assesses the children's body weight status and compares the burden of childhood overweight, obesity, and thinness in Northern, Eastern, and Southern Europe and Central Asia. The results show great geographic variability in height, weight, and body mass index. On average, the c

Changing Patterns in Enteric Fever Incidence and Increasing Antibiotic Resistance of Enteric Fever Isolates in the United States, 2008-2012.

BACKGROUND: Enteric fever in the United States has been primarily associated with travel and with worrisome changes in global patterns of antimicrobial resistance. We present the first comprehensive report of National Typhoid and Paratyphoid Fever Surveillance System (NTPFS) data for a 5-year period (2008-2012). METHODS: We reviewed data on laboratory-confirmed cases reported to NTPFS, and related antimicrobial susceptibility results of Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi A isolates sent for testing by participating public health laboratories to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Nat

Imported enteric fever: case series from the hospital for tropical diseases, London, United Kingdom.

Our current knowledge of the clinical characteristics of enteric fever is drawn mainly from population-based studies in disease-endemic countries, and there are limited data published on cases in returning travelers. We report the clinical characteristics of enteric fever in 92 travelers returning to London, United Kingdom. Salmonella typhi and S. paratyphi resulted in an almost indistinguishable clinical picture. Rose spots and relative bradycardia were found only in a few patients. A total of 91% of the patients had a normal leukocyte count, which was associated with a markedly increased lev

Endoscopic removal of an intraorbital "tumor": a vital surprise.

We present the first case report of an endoscopic removal of a living worm, species Dirofilaria repens, from the orbital cavity. As of today, over 410 cases of Dirofilaria repens infections in man are recorded in world literature, six of which were localized in the orbital cavity. In Austria we know of four cases of an infection with this parasite, but none in the orbit. Dirofilaria repens is widespread only in the Old World, particularly in Southern and Eastern Europe, in Asia Minor, and in Central and Southern Asia. The highest prevalence of the disease is recorded in Italy (181 cases). In c

The formation of human populations in South and Central Asia.

By sequencing 523 ancient humans, we show that the primary source of ancestry in modern South Asians is a prehistoric genetic gradient between people related to early hunter-gatherers of Iran and Southeast Asia. After the Indus Valley Civilization's decline, its people mixed with individuals in the southeast to form one of the two main ancestral populations of South Asia, whose direct descendants live in southern India. Simultaneously, they mixed with descendants of Steppe pastoralists who, starting around 4000 years ago, spread via Central Asia to form the other main ancestral population. The

Genomic characterisation of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in Tajikistan identifies a novel reassortant virus.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is an important human tick-borne pathogen, able to cause severe haemorrhagic fever. CCHFV is endemic in Tajikistan, which records between 5-38 cases of CCHF a year from southern regions. Molecular surveillance of CCHFV is crucial to implement effective prevention and control strategies, understand viral evolution, study transmission dynamics, and develop effective diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. While the presence of Asia-1 and Asia-2 genotypes has been previously reported, only two historical samples from Tajikistan have been fully seque

Trailblazing surgeons: A qualitative interview study on balancing leadership, family and career among women surgeon leaders in South, East, and Southeast Asia.

Workplace challenges faced by female surgeons in Asia have not been as extensively studied as those in Western countries. In traditionally patriarchal Asian societies, few women surgeons reach leadership positions, but the reasons for their success remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine how women surgeon leaders in South, East, and Southeast Asia navigated family related challenges while balancing career demands. Female surgeons from South, East, and Southeast Asia with institutional, national, or international leadership roles were recruited through purposive sampling to ensure reg

Assessing the association between prenatal ambient temperature and extreme low birth weight in South Asia.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested the negative effects of exposure to high temperature during pregnancy on multiple adverse birth outcomes. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the exposure-response relationship and future risk projections for extreme low birth weight (ELBW) in South Asia. METHODS: A total of 393,530 pregnant women from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan were included in this analysis. Annual mean temperature throughout each woman's entire gestational period was estimated from the fifth generation of the European Re-Analysis Land Dataset (ERA5-land). W

Paleogenomics retraces the ancient population history of Southwestern East Asia for the past 12 000 years.

Southwestern East Asia, a key intersection linking southern East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Tibetan Plateau, is a crucial area for the study of early human migrations. However, ancient DNA studies in the eastern part of the region, particularly in Guizhou, are still lacking. We present the first genomic study of Guizhou populations from a time period spanning 12 000 years, including five Guizhou individuals older than 10 000 years. Combined with published Guangxi and Yunnan samples, we reveal a complex genetic history of human populations in southwestern East Asia from the Paleolithic to th

Explicit potentially inappropriate medications criteria for older population in Asian countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Explicit potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) criteria are commonly used to identify and deprescribe potentially inappropriate prescriptions among older patients. Most of these criteria were developed specifically for the Western population, which might not be applicable in an Asian setting. The current study summarizes the methods and drug lists to identify PIM in older Asian people. METHODS: A systematic review of published and unpublished studies were carried out. Included studies described the development of explicit criteria for PIM use in older adults and provided a l

Are Current Lipid Guidelines Adequate for South Asian Patients? A Narrative Review.

South Asians, who account for nearly one quarter of the world's population, experience a disproportionately high burden of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), often presenting 5-10 years earlier than European populations. This review evaluates whether contemporary lipid-management frameworks adequately address cardiovascular risk in South Asians. South Asians exhibit a distinct lipid phenotype characterised by elevated apolipoprotein B (ApoB), hypertriglyceridaemia, reduced HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), increased small dense LDL (sdLDL) particles, and a high prevalence of elevated lipop
