Sinocranial aspergillosis: a form of central nervous system aspergillosis in south India.

Of the 21 patients with aspergillosis of central nervous system seen during the years 1990-1997, 16 (76%) had aspergillosis of sino-cranial origin. The occupation in patients with sino-cranial aspergillosis was either agricultural or manual work and predisposing risk factors were present in only two (12.5%) patients. Skull-base syndromes were the presenting features in 13 patients and three patients presented with features of intracranial space-occupying lesion. Paranasal sinus mass lesions were seen in all the 16 patients. Computerized tomography showed intracranial extradural-enhancing mass

Renal aspergillosis after COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis: A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Renal aspergillosis is a rare condition and this case the first case of Renal aspergillosis reported after COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis. Renal symptoms should arise clinical suspicion to renal involvement that happened as a result of hematogenous spreading of pulmonary aspergillosis. ABSTRACT: Secondary fungal infections are among the most significant complications that can arise after COVID-19 and have the potential to lead to a high rate of morbidity and mortality. As COVID-19 primarily involves the airway, the majority of fungal infections reported have

Biomarkers in the Diagnosis of Aspergillosis.

Aspergillosis is a group of different invasive and non-invasive diseases affecting the lung and other organs, caused by species of the genus Aspergillus. Additionally, complications associated with treatment and the increasing emergence of antifungal-resistant strains of Aspergillus spp. are high-impact problems. For these reasons, a combined approach of diagnostic tests is necessary to reach an accurate and timely diagnosis. This review aims to describe some biomarkers and their usefulness for the diagnosis of aspergillosis. Among the findings obtained in different studies, the nature, analyt

Aspergillosis in Wild Birds.

The ubiquitous fungi belonging to the genus Aspergillus are able to proliferate in a large number of environments on organic substrates. The spores of these opportunistic pathogens, when inhaled, can cause serious and often fatal infections in a wide variety of captive and free-roaming wild birds. The relative importance of innate immunity and the level of exposure in the development of the disease can vary considerably between avian species and epidemiological situations. Given the low efficacy of therapeutic treatments, it is essential that breeders or avian practitioners know the conditions

Invasive aspergillosis and endocarditis.

INTRODUCTION: Aspergillusfumigatus can cause a systemic infection called invasive aspergillosis causing pulmonary and extra-pulmonary damage. Aspergillus endocarditis (AE) is a relatively rare disease but can be life-threatening. CASE REPORTS: We report here on five cases of endocarditis due to invasive aspergillosis: a 58-year-old man receiving immunosuppressive medication following a kidney graft, a 58-year-old man undergoing chemotherapy for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, a 55-year-old man receiving corticosteroids for IgA vasculitis, a 52-year-old HIV-infected woman under no specific trea

Animal Models of Aspergillosis.

Aspergillosis is an airborne fungal disease caused by Aspergillus spp., a group of ubiquitous molds. This disease causes high morbidity and mortality in both humans and animals. The growing importance of this infection over recent decades has created a need for practical and reproducible models of aspergillosis. The use of laboratory animals provides a platform to understand fungal virulence and pathophysiology, assess diagnostic tools, and evaluate new antifungal drugs. In this review, we describe the fungus, various Aspergillus-related diseases in humans and animals and various experimental

Aspergillosis in the 'nonimmunocompromised' host.

Invasive aspergillosis has been classically associated with certain risk factors: cytotoxic chemotherapy, prolonged neutropenia, corticosteroids, transplantation, AIDS. However, the literature is growing that this mycosis, particularly pulmonary aspergillosis, can be seen in patients lacking these factors. Many of the latter patients are in the intensive care unit. Other associated conditions include influenza, nonfungal pneumonia, chronic obstructive lung disease, immaturity, sepsis, liver failure, alcoholism, chronic granulomatous disease and surgery. Certain focal sites, such as sinusitis o

Aspergillosis of the petrous apex.

This case report documents the first use of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) as an adjuvant to revascularisation with a first dorsal metacarpal arterio-venous pedicle in the treatment of a patient with Stage III Kienbock's disease. The patient had complete relief of her symptoms of wrist pain by 8 months postoperatively, when X-rays showed no further evidence of lunate collapse and an MRI scan demonstrated islands of revascularisation. It is impossible to prove unequivocably that BMP contributed to the result seen in this one patient, but this adjuvant concept is based on experimental evidence

Surgery for pulmonary aspergillosis.

OBJECTIVE: Surgery of pulmonary aspergillosis followed by higher incidence of post-operative complications. This was the purpose to evaluate our material. METHODS: Between January 1983 and December 1995, the operation was carried out on a total of 84 patients for pulmonary aspergillosis. The patients were comprised of 71 males and 13 females, with a mean age of 49 years (range, 24-71). Previous lung disorders were observed in about half of the cases (most frequently tuberculosis), while in the other half aspergillosis was developed on the basis of (sub)-acute infections. Haemoptysis was prese

[Aspergillosis of the lymphatic nodes].

The authors emphasize fungal lesions to the lymphatic nodes confirmed by the presence of Aspergillus flavus in blood and throat smear cultures (on Sabouraud's medium) and presence of A. flavus in cytological examination of biopsy from the lymphatic node, increased number of eosinophils in peripheral blood, and infiltration of eosinophils in bone marrow and lymphatic nodes. Aspergillosis coexisted with the infection with Candida albicans and S. aureus. The treatment of recurrent tonsillitis with antibiotics and also lowered granulocyte myeloperoxidase activity with increased production of O2 pe

The spectrum of pulmonary aspergillosis.

Aspergillus species can produce a wide range of pulmonary disorders. Classically, pulmonary aspergillosis has been categorized into invasive, saprophytic, and allergic forms, all of which differ in their manifestations and therapy. More recently, however, other types of infection by this fungus have been recognized that do not fit into these traditional categories; an example is semi-invasive (chronic necrotizing) aspergillosis. In fact, these forms have features that are intermediate between those of the invasive and saprophytic types. The various types of aspergillosis can be regarded as con

Aspergillosis of the nervous system.

Cerebral aspergillosis currently occurs most frequently with disseminated aspergillosis in immunocompromised hosts. Twelve patients with cerebral aspergillosis in this setting were seen over 10 years. Underlying illnesses were renal transplantation in six cases and one case each of subacute hepatic necrosis, head trauma, glioblastoma, microglioma, and esthesioneuroblastoma. All patients were receiving high dose steroid therapy except one who had ectopic ACTH syndrome. Eleven patients were receiving broad spectrum antibiotics. All patients were febrile and developed progressive pulmonary infilt

Aspergillosis of the frontal sinus.

Aspergillus is the most common fungal infection of the paranasal sinuses and usually appears as a chronic disease in an otherwise healthy person. Previously reported cases have involved the maxillary sinus alone in the majority of cases. To my knowledge, isolated frontal sinus aspergillosis has not been previously reported. A frontal osteoplastic flap approach was used to expose a fungus ball in the right frontal sinus of a healthy 69-year-old man. Histologic preparations and fungal cultures showed Aspergillus fumigatus. Follow-up substantiated prior experience that surgical removal of the fun

Disseminated aspergillosis in a dog.

A dog with disseminated Aspergillus terreus infection died after a protracted course of hospitalization. Treatment with amphotericin B methyl ester was without effect. The causative organism was found in bone, myocardium, spleen, kidneys, liver, thymus, lymph nodes, and both eyes. Treatment with antimicrobials and corticosteroids prior to hospitalization may have contributed to dissemination of the fungus.
