An exploratory study of sexual assertiveness and characteristics of African American women in negotiating condom use at an HBCU.

The transmission of HIV/AIDS among African American women through heterosexual sex is an epidemic. Critical themes extracted from the HIV/AIDS sexual assertiveness literature revealed that: (a) sexual assertiveness is related to HIV risk, (b) sexual assertiveness is related to communication, and (c) women with low sexual assertiveness are at risk for HIV. This descriptive study sought to answer the following research question: What do young adult college attending African American women self-report about asking information about their partner's sexual history? The multifaceted model of HIV ris

Assertive Community Treatment and ACT-Derived Outreach Models: A Scoping Review of Adaptations, Fidelity and Outcomes.

UNLABELLED: Severe Mental Illness (SMI) represents a significant public health challenge associated with long-term disability, premature mortality, and high social and health care costs. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is an intensive community-based model for people with SMI who have difficulty engaging with conventional services and are at high risk of repeated hospitalizations. Over time, this model has been adapted to meet diverse needs, contexts, and populations. To map and synthesize evidence on ACT and ACT-derived outreach models, including adaptations, fidelity-related characterist

Identifying false-positive drug allergy alerts based on drug tolerance assertions: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of drug allergy alerts (DAAs) and identify false-positive alerts by analyzing prior drug administration records. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed DAAs fired to providers with prescribing authority in 2023 at a large academic medical center in the Southeast to identify data elements that could help reduce clinically irrelevant alerts. RESULTS: Overall, 101 492 DAAs were triggered in 2023, with a 98.9% override rate. Alerts were fired for 9111 unique patients (an average of 11.1 alerts per patient). Only 9.7% DAAs ha

Rare Encounters: Medical Students Give Assertive Community Treatment Team Visits Rave Reviews.

OBJECTIVE: For 8 years, Albert Einstein College of Medicine students have worked with the Bronx Psychiatric Center Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team. We relate the medical student ACT team experience using the ratings and words of the students themselves. We describe the history, evolution, and structure of this novel program. METHODS: Third-year medical students (N = 120) spent 1 day of their 6-week psychiatry clerkship visiting patients with the multidisciplinary ACT team. At the end of the clerkship, they were asked to complete a voluntary, anonymous survey of the entire clerkship e

Assertive community treatment for adults with complex mental illness and emergency department use: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency Department (ED) wait times have increased globally, resulting in treatment delays and system strain. Complex mental health consumers, those with Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI), are a consistent subgroup of ED presenters. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) has shown promise in reducing inpatient demand but has been criticized as cost-intensive with limited rehabilitation outcomes.  This systematic review evaluated ACT's effectiveness in reducing ED usage and improving psychosocial outcomes. METHODS: Nine databases were searched (31/12/2013-25/10/2023), yi

Pre-Transplant Diagnosis Asserts Significant Post-Transplant Burden on Readmissions and Reinterventions: A Multicenter Study.

PURPOSE: Pre-transplant (PreTX) diagnoses of congenital heart disease (CHD), including single ventricle (SV) CHD, are known to be associated with immediate post-operative morbidity and mortality. However, the impact on post-discharge health and morbidity has not been elucidated. METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information Survey (PHIS) data was used to identify patients undergoing orthotopic heart transplantation (HT). We assessed hospital encounters for readmission, ICU care, and interventions within 1 year of heart transplantation after discharge from HT. RESULTS: A total of 4087 patients we

Drug assertiveness and sexual risk-taking behavior in a sample of HIV-positive, methamphetamine-using men who have sex with men.

Drug assertiveness skills have been demonstrated to be effective in reducing substance use behaviors among patients with alcohol or heroin use disorders. This study examined the association between drug assertiveness and methamphetamine use, psychological factors, and sexual risk behaviors in a sample of 250 HIV-positive men who have sex with men enrolled in a safer sex intervention in San Diego, CA. Less assertiveness in turning down drugs was associated with greater frequency and larger amounts of methamphetamine use, lower self-esteem, higher scores on a measure of sexual sensation seeking,

Comparison of eating disorders and other dietary/weight groups on measures of perceived control, assertiveness, self-esteem, and self-directed hostility.

Anorexic and bulimic patients were compared to obese dieters, nonobese dieters, and normal controls on measures of perceived control, assertiveness, self-esteem, self-directed hostility, and psychiatric caseness. The anorexic and bulimic groups both scored significantly differently in the expected direction from the other three groups on all measures. There were no significant differences between the anorexic and bulimic groups and in turn, no significant differences among the obese, nonobese dieters, and normal controls. Results are in keeping with the notion that perceived control, low asser

Early Health Impacts of a Primary Care Consultation Model for People Served by Assertive Community Treatment teams.

The cardiometabolic health outcomes and life expectancy of people living with serious mental illness (SMI) continue to significantly flag behind that of the general population. This study explores the possibility of using the evidence-based Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model and infrastructure to increase access to primary care and improve cardiometabolic outcomes of people with SMI. Four ACT teams in a large urban area received the services of a primary care consultant who was co-located at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), met regularly with ACT team clinicians to review a c

Theoretical approaches to the engagement with patients in case-management programmes and assertive outreach teams: A systematic review of the literature.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: It is generally accepted that all interventions carried out by mental health nurses involve engagement with the patient; this engagement is a process that is gradually constructed and is not immediate. In Spain during last decade, nurses working in assertive outreach teams have gradually replaced the traditional institutional setting in favour of environments that are more familiar to the patient. In contrast, when patients and nurses interact outside institutional settings, a new approach and skillset is required in order to adapt to the new environment. WHAT TH

Function assertive community treatment (FACT) and psychiatric service use in patients diagnosed with severe mental illness.

AIM: Previous work suggests that the Dutch variant of assertive community treatment (ACT), known as Function ACT (FACT), may be effective in increasing symptomatic remission rates when replacing a system of hospital-based care and separate community-based facilities. FACT guidelines propose a different pattern of psychiatric service consumption compared to traditional services, which should result in different costing parameters than care as usual (CAU). METHODS: South-Limburg FACT patients, identified through the local psychiatric case register, were matched with patients from a non-FACT con

Implementation of the Trigger Checklist and assertive outreach to reduce drug-related harm in the Emergency Department: A realist evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Drug-related harm is a major global public health concern, with opioids implicated in over 70% of drug-related deaths. Scotland reports the highest drug-related mortality rate in Europe, with remote and rural communities facing additional barriers to accessing harm reduction and treatment services. Assertive outreach is increasingly recognised as a key strategy to engage individuals at risk who are disconnected from traditional services. This study evaluates the use of a Trigger Checklist to identify and outreach individuals within 48 hours of referral in a rural Emergency Departme

What is known about flexible assertive community treatment across populations and contexts? A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this scoping review is to elucidate contexts in which Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (FACT) has been utilised, which populations it has served, how it has been adapted and what outcomes it has achieved. FACT is a model of mental healthcare where patients are transitioned along a continuum of high-intensity outreach-based treatment and lower-intensity case management, according to need. Despite being adopted globally, a review of the evidence on the FACT model has not been conducted since 2014. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will follow the Joanna Brigg

Predictors of Assertive and Nonassertive Styles of Self-Defense Behavior During a Lab-Based Sexual Assault Scenario.

The current study examined how psychological factors influence hypothetical behavioral responses to threat (BRTT). College women (n = 113) with a history of sexual victimization completed a standardized lab-based self-defense scenario. Interpersonal skills, coping style, and assertive and nonassertive BRTT during a prior assault predicted assertive BRTT during the task. The use of nonassertive BRTT during past assaults no longer predicted assertive BRTT during the task when accounting for rape acknowledgment. Findings regarding rape acknowledgment demonstrate the complexity of recovery from se

ASSERT--the Autism Symptom SElf-ReporT for adolescents and adults: bifactor analysis and validation in a large adolescent population.

With a view to developing a brief screening instrument for autism symptoms in a general population of adolescents, seven items from the Asperger syndrome (and high-functioning autism) diagnostic interview were adapted for use as self-report in an online questionnaire for youths aged 16-19 years (N=10,220). The selected items target lack of social understanding (4 items) and rigid and repetitive behavior and interests (RRBI; 3 items). Factor analyses were performed, and the seven items were also validated against self-reported ASD diagnosis. Best statistical model fit was found for a bifactor m
