Brain tumors in children and adults differ not only in their cellular characteristics but also in where they typically develop in the brain. In children, 30% of pediatric brain tumors are supratentorial lesions. Low-grade astrocytomas, as pilocytic astrocytoma or craniopharyngioma, are the most common tumors. In this study we describe the case of a 6-year-old male patient, diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 3, presented to the Pediatric Neurology Clinic for routine check-up. During this visit, it was noticed that the patient has recently experienced frequent epileptic attacks regardless of

Glioma can be classified according to its infiltrative capacity into circumscribed and "diffuse"/infiltrative glioma. Pilocytic astrocytoma is typically grouped under the circumscribed astrocytic glioma in the 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. The distinction of pilocytic astrocytoma from diffuse glioma is fundamental as it could be the difference between CNS WHO grade 1 and grade 4 glioma. This study aims to determine the infiltrative nature of pilocytic astrocytoma in different brain locations. All cases diagnosed as "pilocytic astroc

Adult pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs) have been regarded as indistinguishable from pediatric PAs in terms of genome-wide expression and methylation patterns. It has been unclear whether adult PAs arise early in life and remain asymptomatic until adulthood, or whether they develop during adulthood. We sought to determine the age and origin of adult human PAs using two types of "marks" in the genomic DNA. First, we analyzed the DNA methylation patterns of adult and pediatric PAs to distinguish between PAs of different anatomic locations (n = 257 PA and control brain tissues). Second, we measured th

Ependymoblastoma is an uncommon, exceedingly malignant brain neoplasm that adversely influences children's quality of life. Ependymoblastoma represents a subtype of primitive neuroectodermal tumors, categorized as grade IV, according to the 2007 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system tumors. Ependymoblastomas are often located in the supratentorial zone and often associated with the ventricular system. Histopathological sections of the tumor revealed uniform, primitive, small blue cells, with multi-layered rosettes, accompanied by abundant mitoses. The clinica

INTRODUCTION: Gemistocytic astrocytoma is the second most common subtype of World Health Organization grade 2 astrocytoma, but has a worse prognosis than other grade 2 lesions. We aim to describe the MR imaging features of histopathologically proven gemistocytic tumours.
METHODS: Ethics approval was obtained from both institutions. Patient consent was not required for this retrospective study. We reviewed MR imaging findings of 16 consecutive cases of histopathologically proven gemistocytic astrocytoma and anaplastic astrocytoma with gemistocytic features.
RESULTS: Average patient age was 48

Pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) is a rare glioma, which generally occurs in children and young adults. In adult patients, the majority of PA tumors are supratentorial. Due to the low morbidity rate of the disease in adults, PA is frequently misdiagnosed and mistreated. In the present study, this rare disease was successfully treated. The study reported the case of a 48-year-old patient with a cervicomedullary occupying lesion, who complained of numbness and pain of the right limbs that persisted for >10 years, with aggravation for 1 month. A magnetic resonance imaging scan showed a sharp cervicomed

Pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs) were recognized as a discrete clinical entity over 70 years ago. They are relatively benign (WHO grade I) and have, as a group, a 10-year survival of over 90%. Many require merely surgical removal and only very infrequently do they progress to more malignant gliomas. While most show classical morphology, they may present a spectrum of morphological patterns, and there are difficult cases that show similarities to other gliomas, some of which are malignant and require aggressive treatment. Until recently, almost nothing was known about the molecular mechanisms invol

INTRODUCTION: Pilocytic astrocytomas in the supratentorial compartment make up 20 % of all brain tumours in children with only 5 % of these arising in the suprasellar region. Optic pathway gliomas or suprasellar gliomas are often seen in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients. Given their location, suprasellar pilocytic astrocytomas are challenging to manage surgically with high morbidity rates from surgical resection. We assess our cohort of patients with suprasellar pilocytic astrocytoma and document our experience.
METHOD: A retrospective review of patients diagnosed with suprasellar glio

Acquired (neurogenic) stuttering is a rare phenomenon seen after cerebral infarction or brain injury. Aetiology of this symptom is unclear, but recent evidence supports that it is a disturbance in the left hemispheric neural network involving the interplay between the cortex and basal ganglia. We present the case of a patient who develops acquired stuttering after a recurrence of a right temporoparietal anaplastic astrocytoma (WHO grade III). We also review other cases of acquired stuttering and known anatomical correlates.

The WW domain-containing oxidoreductase (WWOX) functions as a tumor suppressor by interacting with various proteins in numerous important signaling pathways. WWOX silencing via homozygous deletion of its locus and/or promoter hypermethylation has been observed in various human cancers. However, the relationship between WWOX and tumors in the central nervous system has not been fully explored. In this study, the expression levels of WWOX protein in astrocytomas from 38 patients with different tumor grades were retrospectively analyzed by immunohistochemical staining. The results showed that 19

BACKGROUND/AIM: At the moment there are few scoring systems for malignant astrocytoma but they are not widely accepted. The aim of this study was to evaluate malignant astrocytoma score (MAS) on a new group of patients with malignant astrocytoma, to compare MAS with other prognostic tools and to describe the use of MAS in everyday practice in neurooncology.
METHODS: The study was performed on 124 patients with supratentorial malignant astrocytoma grade III or IV. They were operated on and subsequently irradiated with 50-60 Gy.
RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 57.3 years. The mean Ka

The authors report a 12-year-old boy who was presented with headache, nausea, vomiting and seizure. His magnetic resonance imaging showed 2 adjacent tumors in the region of the left ventricular trigone. The pathology of tumors reported collision tumors composed of meningioma and malignant astrocytoma.

Adjunctive radiation treatment of childhood intracranial neoplasms of grade II or higher creates a risk of subsequent vasculopathy. A 28-year-old male presented with a Glasgow Coma Scale 12 after acute collapse and hemiparesis with an intraparenchymal haematoma. Emergent craniotomy, histopathology and subsequent imaging confirmed the cause as radiation-induced moyamoya disease, subsequent to treatment for a grade 2 astrocytoma 24 years previously. He had been lost to follow-up after normal serial imaging performed up to 10 years after his initial diagnosis. Long term surveillance imaging may b

Pilomyxoid astrocytoma (PMA) is a recently described neoplasm. PMA shares few features with pilocytic astrocytoma (PA), the most common central nervous system (CNS) tumor in the pediatric population, yet displays histological differences. Previous studies have shown that PMAs have more aggressive biological behavior as compared to PA. These findings suggest that PMA may be a unique and distinct neoplasm. We report a pilomyxoid astrocytoma of the hypothalamic-chiasmatic region with leptomeningeal dissemination in a 3-month old infant. This case report discusses the histological, clinical, and r

Rates of regrowth after resection of subependymal giant cell astrocytoma (SEGA) are low, making surgical resection a successful and permanent therapeutic strategy. In addition to surgical resection of SEGAs, other treatment options now include medications and Gamma Knife™ therapy. Advising patients on medical versus surgical management of SEGAs is currently not easy. SEGAs have been reported to regrow if mTOR inhibitor therapy is stopped, raising the possibility that long-term medication may be required to prevent tumor growth and hydrocephalus. The question of regrowth following medication wi

We report a case of intracranial dissemination developing approximately 4 months after partial removal of a spinal cord anplastic astrocytoma in a 22-year-old male. He presented with paraplegia on initial admission at a local hospital. Spinal magnetic resonance (MR) images disclosed multiple intramedullary lesions at the T3-11. The tumor was partially removed. The final histologic diagnosis was anaplastic astrocytoma. Four months after the operation, he was admitted with the symptoms of headache and deterioration of consciousness. MR images showed enhanced lesions in the anterior horn of the l

We present the case of an 8-year-old girl with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and a short history suggestive of raised intracranial pressure. Urgent computed tomography scan of the head showed a large bleed into a left cerebellar lesion. She underwent treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) and steroids to increase her platelet count, followed by excision of the lesion, which was found to be a benign pilocytic astrocytoma. The patient made a complete recovery and shortly afterwards underwent splenectomy, following which there was complete resolution of her thrombocy

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic features of subependymal giant cell astrocytoma.
METHODS: The clinical and pathologic characteristics of 18 cases of subependymal giant cell astrocytoma were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Amongst the 18 cases studied, there was a male predominance (male-to-female ratio = 2:1). The age of patients ranged from 7 to 54 years (mean age = 18.2 years). The tumor often occurred in the lateral ventricles (16/18, 88.9%). Most patients presented with headache and vomiting (11/18, 61.1%), followed by visual disturbance (3/18, 16.7%). Eleven patients (61.1%
