Frequency and Clinical Features of Space Headache Experienced by Astronauts During Long-Haul Space Flights.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Few anecdotal cases and 1 small retrospective study during short-duration space missions suggest that headache may occur early in flight, as part of the space motion syndrome. Whether headaches may also occur at later stages of space flights is unknown. We aimed to prospectively characterize the incidence, timing, clinical features, and management of space headaches during long-duration flights. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated the occurrence, characteristics, and evolution of space headaches and the effects of treatment and countermeasures during long-haul fligh

Use of DXA-based software to identify astronauts at risk for persisting spaceflight-induced bone loss.

UNLABELLED: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) alone is not ideal for fracture risk assessment given its two-dimensional nature. We evaluated the 3D-Shaper software for its potential to detect an unappreciated hip trabecular bone loss in astronauts. DXA-based 3D-Shaper software showed promising results as a screening tool while minimizing radiation exposure. INTRODUCTION: Prolonged spaceflight results in bone loss, as assessed by DXA performed before and after long-duration missions. Hip trabecular loss, detected by QCT but not DXA, persists in some astronauts for up to 2 years after 6-mo

From chimney sweeps to astronauts: cancer risks in the work place: the 1998 Lauriston Taylor lecture.

Percival Pott, in 1775, was the first to note an association between overt cancer and a carcinogen in the work place when he astutely observed an elevated incidence of scrotal cancer in small boys who assisted chimney sweeps. In their "workplace" astronauts and crew of high altitude jet-liners are exposed, not only to low linear energy transfer (LET) radiation but also to HZE (high energy + high atomic number) particles and to neutrons-for which no human epidemiological data exist. The current system of radiation protection is based on risk estimates from low LET radiations, delivered in large

Cardiovascular and central nervous system risk in astronauts: the minipig as a physiologically relevant radiation model.

Humans will return to the Moon and travel to deep space on their journey to Mars. Space exploration presents significant hazards to human health, including exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPEs). Space radiation-induced carcinogenesis is considered a primary risk to astronaut health. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction have emerged as significant health risks for astronauts. Small animal models, particularly rodents, have provided valuable information regarding IR effects on the cardiov

Animal-assisted resilience in space exploration: a human factors approach to astronaut behavioral health.

Space science has been developed through past and current missions of the International Space Station (ISS) and Artemis (I and II) in low Earth orbit and on the lunar surface. Numerous missions have used animals on test flights to better understand the physiological dangers of space flight for humans. A contemporary focus of space exploration is long-duration crewed travel to establish a Moon station and reach Mars. The astrotechnology of the human-less spaceflights (USA, Russia, ESA, UAE, China, and India) launched in 1965 (Mariner 4), has advanced enough to support the progressive colonizati

Cardiovascular autonomic nervous system responses and orthostatic intolerance in astronauts and their relevance in daily medicine.

BACKGROUND: The harsh environmental conditions during space travel, particularly weightlessness, impose a major burden on the human body including the cardiovascular system. Given its importance in adjusting the cardiovascular system to environmental challenges, the autonomic nervous system has been in the focus of scientists and clinicians involved in human space flight. This review provides an overview on human autonomic research under real and simulated space conditions with a focus on orthostatic intolerance. METHODS: The authors conducted a targeted literature search using Pubmed. RESUL

Improving astronaut cancer risk assessment from space radiation with an ensemble model framework.

A new approach to NASA space radiation risk modeling has successfully extended the current NASA probabilistic cancer risk model to an ensemble framework able to consider sub-model parameter uncertainty as well as model-form uncertainty associated with differing theoretical or empirical formalisms. Ensemble methodologies are already widely used in weather prediction, modeling of infectious disease outbreaks, and certain terrestrial radiation protection applications to better understand how uncertainty may influence risk decision-making. Applying ensemble methodologies to space radiation risk pr

Study of the impact of long-duration space missions at the International Space Station on the astronaut microbiome.

Over the course of a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) crew members are exposed to a number of stressors that can potentially alter the composition of their microbiomes and may have a negative impact on astronauts' health. Here we investigated the impact of long-term space exploration on the microbiome of nine astronauts that spent six to twelve months in the ISS. We present evidence showing that the microbial communities of the gastrointestinal tract, skin, nose and tongue change during the space mission. The composition of the intestinal microbiota became more similar across a

Synergistic action of gravity and temperature on the motor system within the lifespan: a "Baby Astronaut" hypothesis.

Here we describe GATO (gravity, age, thermoregulation, and oxygenation) hypothesis (or a "Baby Astronaut" hypothesis) which we suggest to explain synergistic effect of these factors on the motor system. Taken separately, microgravity (in spaceflight, G~0), the early age, heat and hypoxia exert identical effect on the motor system. We posit that synergy of these factors originate from their synchronicity during intrauterine immersion (analog microgravity) of the fetus in warm hypoxic condition. We further postulate three successive motor adaptive strategies, driven lifelong by gravity as the ke

Food systems for long-term spaceflight: Understanding the role of non-nutrient polyphenols in astronauts' health.

BACKGROUND: Manned space exploration missions have developed at a rapid pace, with missions to Mars likely to be in excess of 1000 days being planned for the next 20 years. As such, it is important to understand and address the challenges that astronauts face, such as higher radiation exposure, altered gravity, and isolation. Meanwhile, until now the formulation of space food systems has not focused on non-nutrients, and has not considered issues arising from their absence during space missions or the possibility of them to solve the challenges caused by space hazards. Targeting hippocampal neurogenesis to protect astronauts' cognition and mood from decline due to space radiation effects.

Neurogenesis is an essential, lifelong process during which neural stem cells generate new neurons within the hippocampus, a center for learning, memory, and mood control. Neural stem cells are vulnerable to environmental insults spanning from chronic stress to radiation. These insults reduce their numbers and diminish neurogenesis, leading to memory decline, anxiety, and depression. Preserving neural stem cells could thus help prevent these neurogenesis-associated pathologies, an outcome particularly important for long-term space missions where environmental exposure to radiation is significa

Optic Disc Edema and Choroidal Engorgement in Astronauts During Spaceflight and Individuals Exposed to Bed Rest.

IMPORTANCE: Optic disc edema develops in astronauts during long-duration spaceflight and is a risk for all future astronauts during spaceflight. Having a ground-based analogue of weightlessness that reproduces critical features of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome will facilitate understanding, preventing, and/or treating this syndrome. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the ocular changes in individuals exposed to an analogue of weightlessness are similar to the ocular changes in astronauts exposed to a duration of spaceflight comparable to this analogue of weightlessness. Radioprotective effects of induced astronaut torpor and advanced propulsion systems during deep space travel.

BACKGROUND: Human metabolic suppression is not a new concept, with 1950s scientific literature and movies demonstrating its potential use for deep space travel (Hock, 1960). An artificially induced state of metabolic suppression in the form of torpor would improve the amount of supplies required and therefore lessen weight and fuel required for missions to Mars and beyond (Choukèr et al., 2019). Transfer habitats for human stasis to Mars have been conceived (Bradford et al., 2018). Evidence suggests that animals, when hibernating, demonstrate relative radioprotection compared to their awake st

Astronaut Michael Collins, Apollo 8, and the anterior cervical fusion that changed the history of human spaceflight.

In 1961, President John F. Kennedy declared that the United States would send a man to the moon and safely bring him home before the end of the decade. Astronaut Michael Collins was one of those men. He flew to the moon on the historic flight of Apollo 11 while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on its surface. However, this was not supposed to be the case.Astronaut Collins was scheduled to fly on Apollo 8. While training, in 1968, he started developing symptoms of cervical myelopathy. He underwent evaluation at Wilford Hall Air Force Hospital in San Antonio and was noted to have a C5-6 dis
