Throwing and racquet sports produce large stresses at the elbow joint consisting of tension on the medial or ulnar side, and compression on the lateral or radial side. Medial tension can lead to tears of the common flexor origin or medial collateral ligament, ulnar nerve subluxation, or pronator teres syndrome. Bony lesions include fragmentation and partial avulsion of the medial humeral epicondyle (little league elbow) or even complete avulsion of the epicondyle. The possible sequelae of excessive lateral compression include osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum, osteochondral fractures

Athletes, particularly those who are involved in sporting activities requiring repetitive overhead use of the arm (for example, tennis players, swimmers, baseball pitchers, and quarterbacks), may develop a painful shoulder. This is often due to impingement in the vulnerable avascular region of the supraspinatus and biceps tendons. With the passage of time, degeneration and tears of the rotator cuff may result. Pathologically the syndrome has been classified into Stage I (edema and hemorrhage), Stage II (fibrosis and tendonitis), and Stage III (tendon degeneration, bony changes, and tendon rupt

Youths are in the process of figuring out answers to the question "who am I?" and young athletes are searching for athletic identity in interaction with their friends, teammates, coaches, and so on. This study explores athletes' presentations of athletic identity based on 24 interviews with ambitious young athletes attending upper secondary sport schools. Anchored in Goffman's theory of the self and the presentation of the self, as well as Markus and Nurius' concept of possible selves, the study views identity as socially constructed in interaction. Utilising this theoretical perspective along

Neck injuries are a common and clinically significant concern in athletes, with presentations ranging from soft tissue strain to spinal cord injury. The cervical spine's unique anatomy and biomechanics enable high mobility but also increase susceptibility to trauma during contact and high-velocity sports. This review examines acute and chronic injuries, including stingers, dislocations, radiculopathy, and spondylosis, and emphasizes their mechanisms, clinical presentations, and diagnostic workup. Management strategies span a range of conservative and surgical options, with evidence supporting

The sudden death of an athlete causes grave concern among the medical, sporting, and lay communities, considering athletes epitomise the healthiest segment of society. Most decedents are asymptomatic, therefore screening to identify vulnerable individuals seems appropriate, particularly since most aetiologies can be detected during life and several therapeutic interventions can be implemented to minimise the risk. Given the diversity of conditions implicated in exercise related SCD, no single test will detect all disorders. Furthermore, the low incidence of SCD allows for a cost-effective appr

Elite athletes are at an increased risk of infections due to behavioral and social factors and frequent travel. Furthermore, heavy physical exercise may induce immunosuppression. Most infections in athletes are acute respiratory illnesses (ARIs) with various viral etiologies. Although athletes, as young, healthy adults, are not at risk for severe infections, a prolonged ARI may ruin a training season or a significant competition or may spread within a sports team. Many common infections are vaccine-preventable. This Opinion advocates for more active vaccination among athletes, although some of

CONTEXT: The ongoing opioid epidemic and associated adverse effects impart a large burden on our current healthcare system. The annual economic and noneconomic cost of opioid use disorder and fatal opioid overdose is currently estimated at $1 trillion.
OBJECTIVE: This review presents the prevalence, frequency of use, need, and effectiveness of opioid analgesia in the youth and adolescent athlete population. It identifies current indications for opioid versus nonopioid analgesic use in the setting of acute orthopaedic injuries, postoperative management, concussion, and chronic pain. Current kn

Athletes and non-athletes experience many anxiety-related symptoms and disorders at comparable rates. Contributory factors may include pressure to perform, public scrutiny, sporting career dissatisfaction, injury, and harassment and abuse in sport. Anxiety may negatively impact sport performance. Specific types of anxiety may have unique presentations in athletes. It is important to rule out general medical and substance-related causes of anxiety symptoms. Psychotherapy and pharmacology treatment options should be considered, bearing in mind athletes' environmental circumstances and physiologi

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding (GIB) in athletes has previously been reported in several studies, as an important factor of underperformance in competitive sports events. Yet it is still underreported, partly because it is usually occult and self-limited soon after the effort. It can originate in either the upper or the lower GI tract and can be proportionally related to the amount and duration of effort. Key pathophysiological factors seem to include splanchnic hypoperfusion, mechanical trauma of the GI wall, and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Appropriate nutrition,

Acute adductor injuries are a common occurrence in sport. The overall incidence of adductor strains across 25 college sports was 1.29 injuries per 1000 exposures, with men's soccer (3.15) and men's hockey (2.47) having the highest incidences. As with most muscle strains there is a high rate of recurrence for adductor strains; 18% in professional soccer and 24% in professional hockey. Effective treatment, with successful return to play, and avoidance of reinjury, can be achieved with a proper understanding of the anatomy, a thorough clinical exam yielding an accurate diagnosis, and an evidence-

»: Calf strain is a common condition. In high-performance athletes, calf strain contributes to a substantial absence from competition.
»: Player age and history of a calf strain or other leg injury are the strongest risk factors for calf strain injury and reinjury.
»: Although the diagnosis is often clinical, magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound are valuable to confirm the location of the strain and the grade of injury.
»: Nonoperative treatment is effective for most calf strain injuries. Operative management, although rarely indicated, may be appropriate for severe cases with grade-II

BACKGROUND: Sports participation has been growing rapidly since the 1960s. Anaesthesiologists are increasingly confronted with athletes in a peri-operative setting. The right choice of type of anaesthesia technique, pain management of injuries, specific physiologic adaptations of the athlete and knowledge of prohibited substances are eminent for a correct approach of this subpopulation.
PURPOSE: This review aims to give an overview of athletes' specific anaesthetic management in peri-operative and postoperative settings and to guide the nonspecialised anaesthetist.
METHODS: We comprehensivel

Scaphoid fractures are common injuries in athletes. Most can be treated with cast immobilization, with an expected rate of union of 90% to 95%. Cast treatment, however, has the disadvantages of longer immobilization time, joint stiffness, reduced grip strength, and longer time to return to manual work or athletics. Closed reduction and percutaneous screw fixation generally are preferred in athletes to allow a quicker return to sport; if closed reduction cannot be obtained, open reduction and internal fixation may be required.

A major proportion of athletes have intermittent acute low back pain at some stage of their sport life. Some athletes develop chronic low back pain, which may be a major source of failing in sports. Facet, epidural and intradiscal steroid injections for specific pain generators in the spine show different short- and long-term results. They can improve low back pain for specific pain generators experienced by back pain patients and might be able to help some of these athletes to avoid open surgery and shorten the time until return to sports (RTS). Facet and intradiscal steroid injections provid

Neurologic disease does not discriminate, even among athletes. Common neurologic diseases among athletes include multiple sclerosis, seizures, headaches, and sleep disorders. Although concrete guidelines for sport participation among athletes with neurologic diseases do not exist, evidence-based and consensus statements can aid healthcare providers in determining whether and to what extent such athletes should participate in sports. Moreover, sport participation is important, since multiple studies indicate that exercise improves disease-specific symptoms, manifestations, and overall quality o

Injuries and disorders of the elbow in athletes are common especially among throwing athletes. Common injuries encountered in the throwing athlete include ulnar collateral ligament injuries, ulnar neuritis, capitellar osteochondritis dissecans, valgus extension overload with posterior olecranon impingement, olecranon stress fracture, and loose bodies. A thorough knowledge of both the functional anatomy as well as throwing biomechanics are required to properly diagnosis and treat these problems. Nonoperative and surgical techniques have continued to advance over the last 25 years allowing for i
