Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving functionally disruptive inattentive and/or hyperactive/impulsive behaviors, such as being easily distracted, regularly failing to follow through on tasks, being restless, or often interrupting others. ADHD diagnosed in childhood often persists into adulthood, with 14.6% of U.S. adults meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed., criteria for ADHD. When evaluating for adult ADHD, other mental disorders should be included in the differential diagnosis due to the substantial o

Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder in Athletes.

ADHD is common among the general population and may be slightly more common among athletes. Diagnosis requires six or more DSM-5-TR symptoms to have been present prior to age 12 and to have an effect on functioning in multiple settings. Different sporting organizations have varying requirements for documentation when making a diagnosis. Stimulant medications are the mainstay of treatment; psychosocial interventions, exercise, and non-stimulant medications can serve as adjuncts. Future directions in research on ADHD in sports include determining whether ADHD is overrepresented among the populat

Perception in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

A large body of research demonstrated that individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suffer from various neuropsychological deficits. In contrast, less is known and only divergent evidence exists on perceptual functions of individuals with ADHD. This is problematic as neuropsychological and perceptual functions are closely interrelated and are often difficult to disentangle in behavioral assessments. This study presents the conduct and results of a systematic literature review on perceptual functions in children and adults with ADHD. This review considers studies using p

It Is Just Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder…or Is It?

Carly is a 5-year-old girl who presents for an interdisciplinary evaluation due to behaviors at school and home suggestive of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Parent report of preschool teacher concerns was consistent with ADHD. Psychological testing showed verbal, visual-spatial, and fluid reasoning IQ scores in the average range; processing speed and working memory were below average. Carly's behavior improved when her mother left the room, and she was attentive during testing with a psychologist. Tests of executive function (EF) skills showed mixed results. Working memory wa

[Prevention in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that begins at an early age and can be present until adulthood. Subjects with ADHD not only have symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity or hyperactivity but also have their social and emotional areas affected. In addition, they have an associated increased risk for presenting comorbilities with other psychiatric disorders, overshadowing the development. Considering ADHD as a evolutionary risk factor, prevention should be considered as a primary goal. Most preventive actions on ADHD have been focused on tertiary

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults.

OBJECTIVE: To examine available literature regarding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. METHODS: An electronic literature search of peer-reviewed English language articles using MEDLINE (without time limits) was undertaken. RESULTS: Symptoms of ADHD in adults exert a substantial negative impact on daily life, including work, social life and relationships. Co-morbidities are common, further impairing quality of life. Diagnosis of adult ADHD can be difficult, as current criteria require evidence of symptom onset before the age of 7 years and impact on activities typical

[Comorbidity in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

In this paper we review the aspects linked with the comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The disorders most frequently associated with ADHD are: Tourette syndrome, generalised development disorders, communication disorders, learning disorders, coordination development disorders, behavioural disorders, anxiety disorders, affective disorders and mental retardation. From the neurocognitive point of view, the executive functions play an important role in ADHD and from the neuroanatomical point of view there is involvement of the frontostriatal circuits. The functional mo

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults.

It has been estimated that 30% to 70% of children who are diagnosed as having attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) will continue to show symptoms of the condition as adults. Since the prevalence of ADHD among school children may be 3% or more, its prevalence among adults may be 1% or 2%. The third revised edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (1987) of the American Psychiatric Association lists three essential features for the diagnosis of ADHD: "developmentally inappropriate inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity." Other conditions associated with ADHD in adults i

Adults with Tourette's syndrome with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbidity between Tourette's syndrome (TS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is high. In children, those with both TS+ADHD fare less well than those with TS-only on measures of both psychopathology and behaviour. The objective of this study was to document such measures in adult patients. METHOD: Eighty adults with TS-only were compared to 64 with TS+ADHD using a clinical interview and standardised measures of depression, anxiety and obsessionality. RESULTS: The two groups were no different on measures of TS severity. TS+ADHD patients had significantly more dep

[Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and sleep disorders].

The attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is an heterogeneous, complex and common childhood disorder that causes significant impairment of child's functioning. This paper reviews the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, comorbidity, course and treatment of ADHD. Special attention is paid to sleep problems both because these 2 conditions frequently co-exist and because there is substantial evidence that ADHD psychopathology and sleep-wake regulation share common neurobiologic mechanisms. Moreover, there could be an overlap between symptoms of ADHD and certain sleep problems such as obst

The Role of Polysomnography for Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Objective: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior. In recent years, studies have shown that patients with ADHD often experience sleep problems, raising clinical interest in the potential role of polysomnography (PSG) in the diagnosis and management of ADHD. This study examines polysomnographic findings in children with ADHD who present with diverse sleep complaints. Methods: A cohort of children aged younger than 18 years, diagnosed with ADHD based on DSM-5 criteria

Methylphenidate for children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed and treated psychiatric disorders in childhood. Typically, children and adolescents with ADHD find it difficult to pay attention and they are hyperactive and impulsive. Methylphenidate is the psychostimulant most often prescribed, but the evidence on benefits and harms is uncertain. This is an update of our comprehensive systematic review on benefits and harms published in 2015. OBJECTIVES: To assess the beneficial and harmful effects of methylphenidate for children and adolescents with ADHD. SE

Dysmenorrhea and psychological wellbeing among females with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Although rarely examined together, ADHD, emotional regulation (ER), and dysmenorrhea may be associated, which could create additive burdens on psychological well-being (PWB). Clinicians working with ADHD populations may need to take these challenges into consideration to maximize treatment outcomes. This study investigated the relationships among ADHD, dysmenorrhea, ER, and PWB within a sample of 266 adult females with a self-reported ADHD diagnosis. ADHD symptom severity was positively correlated with dysmenorrhea severity, but ER skills were not a significant moderator of this relationship.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is associated with disordered eating in adolescents.

AIM: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disordered eating (DE) are both highly prevalent among adolescents, but their relationship is understudied. This study examines their possible association in a nationally representative sample of adolescents. METHODS: Participants in the Israeli Youth Health and Nutrition Survey (2015-2016), a cross-sectional, school-based study, completed self-administered questionnaires, including the SCOFF questionnaire, and underwent anthropometric measurements. An affirmative reply to at least two SCOFF items was considered a DE case. Multivariable

Patient Outcomes following Septoplasty in Patients with Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Recent research has indicated that daytime manifestations of sleep-disordered breathing, frequently caused by deviated septum, can mimic many characteristic symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and could indicate intermittent hypoxia or hypercarbia as factors in the development of ADHD. To investigate the differences in outcomes following septoplasty between patients with ADHD and deviated septum, we used a retrospective cohort design to compare outcomes in patients diagnosed with deviated septa between June 1, 2002 and June 1, 2022. We then separated these patients into

Low serum allopregnanolone levels in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has increasing evidence for the role of neurohormones in its etiopathogenesis. It has been suggested that the effects of neurosteroids on the brain in the early developmental period may predispose to neurodevelopmental pathologies. In our study, we examined serum dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), and allopregnanolone levels in children with ADHD and whether these neurosteroids differ in the presence of specific learning disorder (SLD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) comorbidities (ADHD+SLD and ADHD+OD
