Pathophysiological changes of the central auditory pathway after blunt trauma of the head.

It is the aim of the present paper to correlate clinical symptoms of auditory dysfunction (tinnitus, hyperacusis, hearing loss) one year on average after a blunt trauma of the head with objective audiological test results (otoacoustic emission and auditory brainstem response testing, impedance audiometry) and to compare these findings to controls without history of head trauma. Thirty-one patients (24-56 years) were included. They were largely female (n = 26). The clinical and otolaryngological examination (including otoscopy) of all patients revealed no pathological abnormalities. Pure-tone a

Ventral and dorsal visual pathways support auditory motion processing in the blind: evidence from electrical neuroimaging.

Blindness induces processes of neural plasticity, resulting in recruitment of the deafferentated visual areas for non-visual sensory functions. These processes are related to superior abilities of blind compared with sighted individuals for specific auditory and tactile tasks. Recently, an exceptional performance of the blind has been demonstrated for auditory motion perception, with a minimum audible movement angle that was half that of sighted controls (J. Lewald (2013) Neuropsychologia, 51, 181-186). The present study revealed an electrophysiological correlate of this finding by analysing t

Transcriptome Analysis of Deafness: Intracellular Signal Transduction Signaling Pathways Regulate Neuroplastic Changes in the Auditory Cortex.

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: Hearing loss leads to synaptic changes in auditory neurons and their networks, and functions as a consequence of the interplay between genes and proteins. However, cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to deafness-induced plasticity in the auditory cortex (AC) remain unclear. Here, we examined the changes in gene expression and key signaling pathways that regulate differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the AC following auditory deafferentation using RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis. METHODS: Cochlear ablation-induced bilaterally deafened Sprague-Dawley rats w

A novel EEG paradigm to simultaneously and rapidly assess the functioning of auditory and visual pathways.

Objective assessment of the sensory pathways is crucial for understanding their development across the life span and how they may be affected by neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum) and neurological pathologies (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis, etc.). Quick and passive measurements, for example, using electroencephalography (EEG), are especially important when working with infants and young children and with patient populations having communication deficits (e.g., aphasia). However, many EEG paradigms are limited to measuring activity from one sensory domain at a time, may be

Diffusion Tensor Imaging of Central Auditory Pathways in Patients with Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review.

Objective The radiologic evaluation of patients with hearing loss includes computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to highlight temporal bone and cochlear nerve anatomy. The central auditory pathways are often not studied for routine clinical evaluation. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an emerging MRI-based modality that can reveal microstructural changes in white matter. In this systematic review, we summarize the value of DTI in the detection of structural changes of the central auditory pathways in patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Data Sources PubMed, Embase, and

High emotional arousal and failures in reality monitoring: pathways to auditory hallucinations in non-psychotic children?

Recent research has confirmed the presence of auditory hallucinations in non-psychotic children, with this research also suggesting that such hallucinations may be more common than previously thought. While auditory hallucinations in children have frequently been associated with high levels of emotional stress, there is still a poor understanding of how this stress may precipitate hallucinations, and why some children experience hallucinations while others seem not to. The current study assessed the association between high levels of trauma symptomatology, anxiety and depression, and the prese

Effect of neonatal asphyxia on the impairment of the auditory pathway by recording auditory brainstem responses in newborn piglets: a new experimentation model to study the perinatal hypoxic-ischemic damage on the auditory system.

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is a major perinatal problem that results in severe damage to the brain impairing the normal development of the auditory system. The purpose of the present study is to study the effect of perinatal asphyxia on the auditory pathway by recording auditory brain responses in a novel animal experimentation model in newborn piglets. METHOD: Hypoxia-ischemia was induced to 1.3 day-old piglets by clamping 30 minutes both carotid arteries by vascular occluders and lowering the fraction of inspired oxygen. We compared the Auditory Brain Responses (ABRs) of newborn pi

Noncanonical short-latency auditory pathway directly activates deep cortical layers.

Auditory processing in the cerebral cortex is considered to begin with thalamocortical inputs to layer 4 (L4) of the primary auditory cortex (A1). In this canonical model, A1 L4 inputs initiate a hierarchical cascade that propagates to higher-order cortices for slower integration of complex sounds. Here, we identify parallel ascending pathways in mice that bypass A1 and directly reach the secondary auditory cortex (A2), alongside the canonical hierarchical route. We found that layer 6 (L6) of both A1 and A2 receive short-latency (<10 ms) sound inputs via higher-order thalamic nuclei. Additiona

Effect of perinatal and postnatal thiamine deficiency on auditory pathway of the Wistar-Albino rats.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we created an animal model to demonstrate the effects of thiamine on the hearing pathways of new-borns during pregnancy and lactation by inducing a dietary thiamine deficiency in the mother. METHODS: The study included 16 female Wistar albino rats. The animals were separated into four groups and provided the appropriate amounts of dietary thiamine according to their groups during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and lactation periods. Three pups from each mother were included in the study, and 12 pups were selected from each group. On the fortieth day after birth, the audit

Evidence of central involvement in essential tremor: a detailed study of auditory pathway physiology.

Essential tremor (ET) is a common tremor disorder that is likely neurodegenerative. The pathophysiology of ET involves the cerebellum and its connections in the brainstem and thalamus. Hearing dysfunction has been shown to be a non-motor finding in ET patients. A limited number of studies have suggested that cochlear pathology is the cause, but studies have not evaluated the integrity of the primary auditory pathway in ET. The main aim of this study is to investigate the integrity of the auditory pathway via auditory brainstem response (ABR) and auditory middle latency response (AMLR), thereby

Pairing vagus nerve stimulation with tones drives plasticity across the auditory pathway.

Previous studies have demonstrated that pairing vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with sounds can enhance the primary auditory cortex (A1) response to the paired sound. The neural response to sounds following VNS-sound pairing in other subcortical and cortical auditory fields has not been documented. We predicted that VNS-tone pairing would increase neural responses to the paired tone frequency across the auditory pathway. In this study, we paired VNS with the presentation of a 9-kHz tone 300 times a day for 20 days. We recorded neural responses to tones from 2,950 sites in the inferior colliculus

Acute Noise Exposure Is Associated With Intrinsic Apoptosis in Murine Central Auditory Pathway.

Noise that is capable of inducing the hearing loss (NIHL) has a strong impact on the inner ear structures and causes early and most obvious pathophysiological changes in the auditory periphery. Several studies indicated that intrinsic apoptotic cell death mechanisms are the key factors inducing cellular degeneration immediately after noise exposure and are maintained for days or even weeks. In addition, studies demonstrated several changes in the central auditory system following noise exposure, consistent with early apoptosis-related pathologies. To clarify the underlying mechanisms, the pres

Activation in the auditory pathway of the gerbil studied with 18F-FDG PET: effects of anesthesia.

Here, we present results from an 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) study in the Mongolian gerbil, a preferred animal model in auditory research. One major issue in preclinical nuclear imaging, as well as in most of the neurophysiological methods investigating auditory processing, is the need of anesthesia. We compared the usability of two types of anesthesia which are frequently employed in electrophysiology, ketamine/xylazine (KX), and fentanyl/midazolam/medetomidine (FMM), for valid measurements of auditory activation with 18F-FDG PET. Gerbils were placed in
