The Role of Auditory and Visual Modality in Perception of Focus in Mandarin Chinese.

PURPOSE: Speech perception is a complex process that involves multiple sensory modalities. Despite our intuitions of speech as something we hear, accumulating evidence has shown that speech perception is not solely dependent on the auditory modality. While it is well established that auditory and visual cues can both help listeners perceive focus, the latter is not established in Mandarin, and the relative contribution of these cues is not established at all. The current study investigated Mandarin listeners' integration of auditory and visual cues in the interpretation of focus in noise-degra

On the accuracy of adults' auditory perception of normophonic and dysphonic children's personality.

We investigated the accuracy of auditory inferences of personality of Belgian children with vocal fold nodules (VFN). External judges (n = 57) were asked to infer the personality of normophonic (NP) children and children with VFN (n = 10) on the basis of vowels and sentences. The auditory inferred profiles were compared to the actual personality of NP and VFN children. Positive and partly accurate inferences of VFN children's personality were made on the basis of connected speech, while sustained vowels yielded negative and inaccurate inferences of personality traits of children with VFN. Auditory Perception as a Surrogate for Auditory Imagery in EEG-Based BCI Training: Neural Evidence and a Feasibility Study.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems are commonly classified as reactive or active. Reactive BCIs rely on responses to external stimuli, simplifying decoding but limiting direct user control. In contrast, active BCIs enable intuitive control through spontaneous mental activity but impose greater signal-processing challenges. Speech BCIs, a subset of active systems, hold promise for individuals with severe neurological impairments such as locked-in syndrome (LIS), potentially enabling communication through imagined speech. However, their adoption is hindered by the demanding pre-training requ

Accuracy of Auditory and Auditory-Visual Voice Quality Perception by Speech Language Pathologists and Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialists.

Voice quality is evaluated by speech and language pathologists (SLPs) and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists. They often use either auditory-perceptual assessment or laryngoscopy, which provides visualization of the larynx or both (auditory-visual assessment). This study compared the accuracy of auditory-perceptual voice quality assessment between auditory and auditory-visual assessments, and between SLPs and ENTs. Thirty SLPs and 30 ENTs listened to recordings that represent six voice qualities (high pitch, whisper, strained whisper, vocal fry, strained, and wet voice) realized with the

Perception of dynamic multi-speaker auditory scenes under different modes of attention.

Attention is not monolithic; rather, it operates in multiple forms to facilitate efficient cognitive processing. In the auditory domain, attention enables the prioritization of relevant sounds in an auditory scene and can be either attracted by elements in the scene in a bottom-up fashion or directed towards features, objects, or the entire scene in a top-down fashion. How these modes of attention interact and whether their neural underpinnings are distinct remains unclear. In this work, we investigate the perceptual and neural correlates of different attentional modes in a controlled "cocktai

Impact of visual and auditory deprivation on speech perception: an EEG study.

This study investigated the impact of auditory and visual deprivation on speech processing by analyzing auditory evoked potentials (MMN, P3a, P2, N2b) in congenitally blind individuals, cochlear implant (CI) users, and normal-hearing controls. Using a passive oddball paradigm with /u/ as the standard stimulus and /i/ and /y/ as deviants, we recorded and analyzed auditory evoked potentials in fronto-central and centro-parietal regions. Blind participants exhibited significantly faster MMN and N2b latencies than controls and CI users, reflecting enhanced auditory temporal resolution due to cross

Effective Connectivity Network of Aberrant Prediction Error Processing in Auditory Phantom Perception.

Introduction: Prediction error (PE) is key to perception in the predictive coding framework. However, previous studies indicated the varied neural activities evoked by PE in tinnitus patients. Here, we aimed to reconcile the conflict by (1) a more nuanced view of PE, which could be driven by changing stimulus (stimulus-driven PE [sPE]) and violation of current context (context-driven PE [cPE]) and (2) investigating the aberrant connectivity networks that are engaged in the processing of the two types of PEs in tinnitus patients. Methods: Ten tinnitus patients with normal hearing and healthy co

Predictive coding and stochastic resonance as fundamental principles of auditory phantom perception.

Mechanistic insight is achieved only when experiments are employed to test formal or computational models. Furthermore, in analogy to lesion studies, phantom perception may serve as a vehicle to understand the fundamental processing principles underlying healthy auditory perception. With a special focus on tinnitus-as the prime example of auditory phantom perception-we review recent work at the intersection of artificial intelligence, psychology and neuroscience. In particular, we discuss why everyone with tinnitus suffers from (at least hidden) hearing loss, but not everyone with hearing loss

Does Auditory Environment Predict Speech Perception Outcomes in Elderly Cochlear Implant Patients?

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) is a reliable and safe means by which sensorineural hearing loss can be ameliorated in the elderly population. However, a high degree of variation exists in postimplantation hearing outcomes for which some modifiable factors of the daily natural auditory environment may be contributory. In this study, we analyze the relationship between cochlear implant patient age, natural auditory environment, and postimplantation speech perception among older adults. METHODS: Data log from automatic environment classification enabled sound processors of postlinguall

A Review of Auditory Prediction and Its Potential Role in Tinnitus Perception.

BACKGROUND: The precise mechanisms underlying tinnitus perception and distress are still not fully understood. A recent proposition is that auditory prediction errors and related memory representations may play a role in driving tinnitus perception. It is of interest to further explore this. PURPOSE: To obtain a comprehensive narrative synthesis of current research in relation to auditory prediction and its potential role in tinnitus perception and severity. RESEARCH DESIGN: A narrative review methodological framework was followed. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: The key words Prediction Audi

Involvement of ordinary what and where auditory cortical areas during illusory perception.

The focus of the present study is on the relationships between illusory and non-illusory auditory perception analyzed at a biological level. To this aim, we investigate neural mechanisms underlying the Deutsch's illusion, a condition in which both sound identity ("what") and origin ("where") are deceptively perceived. We recorded magnetoencephalogram from healthy subjects in three conditions: (a) listening to the acoustic sequence eliciting the illusion (ILL), (b) listening to a monaural acoustic sequence mimicking the illusory percept (MON), and (c) listening to an acoustic sequence similar t

Concurrent auditory perception difficulties in older adults with right hemisphere cerebrovascular accident.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with cerebrovascular accident (CVA) show evidence of auditory and speech perception problems. In present study, it was examined whether these problems are due to impairments of concurrent auditory segregation procedure which is the basic level of auditory scene analysis and auditory organization in auditory scenes with competing sounds. METHODS: Concurrent auditory segregation using competing sentence test (CST) and dichotic digits test (DDT) was assessed and compared in 30 male older adults (15 normal and 15 cases with right hemisphere CVA) in the same age groups (60

Auditory brainstem implants in neurofibromatosis Type 2: is open speech perception feasible?

OBJECT: Patients with bilateral auditory nerve destruction may perceive some auditory input with auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). Despite technological developments and trials in new stimulation sites, hearing is very variable and of limited quality. The goal of this study was to identify advantageous and critical factors that influence the quality of auditory function, especially speech perception. METHODS: The authors conducted a prospective study on ABI operations performed with the aid of multimodality neuromonitoring between 2005 and 2009 in 18 patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2.

Characterizing auditory processing and perception in individual listeners with sensorineural hearing loss.

This study considered consequences of sensorineural hearing loss in ten listeners. The characterization of individual hearing loss was based on psychoacoustic data addressing audiometric pure-tone sensitivity, cochlear compression, frequency selectivity, temporal resolution, and intensity discrimination. In the experiments it was found that listeners with comparable audiograms can show very different results in the supra-threshold measures. In an attempt to account for the observed individual data, a model of auditory signal processing and perception [Jepsen et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 42

Abnormalities of ABR and auditory perception test findings in acquired palatal myoclonus.

An auditory test battery consisting of pure tone audiometry, the auditory brainstem response (ABR), the nonsense monosyllable perception test, the dichotic listening test and the Token test were administered to three patients with palatal myoclonus. All patients had ABR abnormalities correlated with the location of brainstem lesions, despite relatively normal pure-tone threshold. In two of the three patients, both the nonsense monosyllable test and the dichotic listening test revealed dominance on the side ipsilateral to the lesion, while ABR abnormalities were present on the contralateral sid

Effects of recurrent otitis media in infancy on auditory perception and speech.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent otitis media is commonly encountered in children before 3 years of age. Conductive hearing loss up to 40 dB is frequently associated with suppurative otitis media. Good hearing is believed to be critical to the development of normal language. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of recurrent otitis media on auditory perception and speech. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 33 children with a history of at least three episodes of acute otitis media before 2 years of age. A control group of 29 children experienced one or fewer episodes

Generalization of conditioned suppression during salicylate-induced phantom auditory perception in rats.

Tonal frequency generalization was examined in a total of 114 pigmented male rats, 60 of which were tested under the influence of salicylate-induced phantom auditory perception, introduced before or after lick suppression training. Thirty control subjects received saline injections, and the remaining 24 subjects served as noninjected controls of tonal background effects on generalization. Rats were continuously exposed to background noise alone or with a superimposed tone. Offset of background noise alone (Experiment I), or combined with onset or continuation of the tone (Experiments II and II

[Auditory perception and fetal reaction to react to sound stimulation (author's transl)].

The confirmation of techniques used to stimulate the fetus in utero led us to an exhaustive study of spontaneous intra-uterine noises and those modified by different stimuli (while evaluating the diagnosis of fetal distress with flat cardiac rhythm during pregnancy). By the use of elaborate techniques simultaneously we could appreciate the signal and analyse the information obtained and we able to show incontrovertibly that over and above the basal sound that the fetus could hear it could appreciate the mother's voice and other voices, which were perfectly audible to it but lacking in tone bec
