UNLABELLED: Task-free brain activity exhibits spontaneous fluctuations between functional states, characterized by synchronized activation patterns in distributed resting-state (RS) brain networks. The temporal dynamics of the networks' electrophysiological signatures reflect individual variations in brain activity and connectivity linked to mental states and cognitive functions and can predict or monitor vulnerability to develop psychiatric or neurological disorders. In particular, RS alpha fluctuations modulate perceptual sensitivity, attentional shifts, and cognitive control, and could ther

Congenital amusia is a lifelong disorder that compromises the normal development of musical abilities in 1.5-4% of the general population. There is a substantial genetic contribution to congenital amusia, and it bears similarities to neurodevelopmental disorders of language. Here, we examine the extent to which variants in the forkhead box P2 gene (FOXP2)-the first gene to be identified as causal in developmental speech deficits-are associated with the amusic trait. Using a cohort of 49 individuals with amusia, of which 27 were unrelated, the role of FOXP2 variants in amusia was evaluated. Fou

A core difficulty in developmental dyslexia is the accurate specification and neural representation of speech. We argue that a likely perceptual cause of this difficulty is a deficit in the perceptual experience of rhythmic timing. Speech rhythm is one of the earliest cues used by infants to discriminate syllables and is determined principally by the acoustic structure of amplitude modulation at relatively low rates in the signal. We show significant differences between dyslexic and normally reading children, and between young early readers and normal developers, in amplitude envelope onset de

Recent behavioral evidence supports the idea that some individuals with reading and language disorders are impaired in their perception of nonlinguistic auditory and visual information. More sophisticated measurement paradigms and analysis techniques are leading to a clearer understanding of these deficits and to possibilities for their remediation.

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD) has been developed and edited by the World Health Organisation and represents the global standard for recording health information and causes of death. The ICD-11 is the eleventh revision and came into effect on 1 January 2022. Perceptual disturbances refer to abnormalities in the way sensory information is interpreted by the brain, leading to distortions in the perception of reality. These can manifest as distorted perceptions or as phantom perceptions and can occur in all sensory modalities as visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory tactile,

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) is a voice disorder characterized by variable symptom severity and voice disability. Those with the disorder experience a wide spectrum of symptom severity over time, resulting in varied degrees of perceived voice disability. This study investigated the longitudinal variability of AdSD, with a focus on auditory-perceptual judgments of a dimension termed laryngeal overpressure (LO) and patient self-assessments of voice-related quality of life (V-RQOL).
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal, correlational study.
METHODS: Ten adults with AdSD were

Dyslexia research now faces an intriguing paradox. It is becoming increasingly clear that a significant proportion of dyslexics present sensory and/or motor deficits; however, as this 'sensorimotor syndrome' is studied in greater detail, it is also becoming increasingly clear that sensory and motor deficits will ultimately play only a limited role in a causal explanation of specific reading disability.

The primary aim of this investigation was to evaluate listener auditory-perceptual assessment of employability for individuals with hypernasal speech. Using an online survey platform, listeners with managerial experience evaluated speech samples from individuals with varying hypernasal resonance disorder severity to determine auditory-perceptual judgements regarding intelligence and employability. Speech samples of individuals with hypernasal speech were rated lower on scales of intelligence and employability, and more likely to be selected for jobs with infrequent rates of communication and l

Twelve schizophrenic subjects with acoustic hallucinations in their case histories were compared with 12 healthy reference subjects and eight subjects with panic disorder in a test of three auditory masking tasks, simultaneous masking (SM), forward masking (FM) and backward masking (BM). The schizophrenic subjects showed no differences from reference subjects on SM but had higher thresholds for the two other conditions (FM and BM). Schizophrenics with very increased thresholds (n=6) had a significantly higher need for residential treatment. Thresholds for SM and BM were not, as for reference s

Background: The need for telepractice and digital treatment has increased due to issues this revision.regarding medical access and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in many countries, telepractice is rarely performed. The purpose of this pilot study was to describe the detailed process of telepractice in patients with hyperfunctional voice disorder and investigate its effects. Methods: The three subjects who were enrolled in this pilot study had hyperfunctional voice disorders. The evaluation was performed face to face. Auditory perceptual evaluation, acoustic evaluation, aerodynamic evaluation,

PURPOSE: This clinical tutorial will present the concept of applying auditory-perceptual prompts (implicit instruction) typically used in voice therapy to the anatomy and physiology of the voice production system (explicit instruction) via the Estill Voice Model (EVM) and the Rehabilitation Treatment Specification System (RTSS).
METHODS: EVM offers an integrated implicit-explicit instructional approach to voice training allowing for isolated practice of vocal structures (explicit) that interact to produce functional voice qualities (implicit), such as modal speech and louder projected voice q

Debilitating perceptual disorders including tinnitus, hyperacusis, phantom limb pain and visual release hallucinations may reflect aberrant patterns of neural activity in central sensory pathways following a loss of peripheral sensory input. Here, we explore short- and long-term changes in gene expression that may contribute to hyperexcitability following a sudden, profound loss of auditory input from one ear. We used fluorescence in situ hybridization to quantify mRNA levels for genes encoding AMPA and GABAA receptor subunits (Gria2 and Gabra1, respectively) in single neurons from the inferio

A 75 year-old right handed woman had persistent right homonymous hemianopia and alexia without agraphia caused by a haemorrhagic stroke of the left occipito-temporal region. Six months later she suffered sudden onset visual and auditory agnosia, following a second haematoma, contralateral to the first one, in the right occipito-temporal region including the lingual and fusiform gyri. None of the disorders concerned semantic representation, so that an asemantic agnosia was excluded. Her performance in naming and recognition tests, in both visual and auditory modalities, demonstrated a wide rang

A suddenly occurring episode characterized by perceptual alteration (SEPA), mainly of visual and/or auditory modalities, which repeatedly occurred in three schizophrenic patients on long-term neuroleptic medication, is described. Perceptual alteration showed some distinct features that were different from acute symptoms of schizophrenia, and was accompanied by mood changes such as severe anxiety and agitation and, in one of the patients, also by extrapyramidal symptoms. Perceptual alteration, as well as mood changes and extrapyramidal symptoms, responded well to an anticholinergic drug, biperi

Cerebral SPECT imaging has the potential to make an important contribution to clinical psychiatry. Cerebral SPECT scanning, stimulated by the work with PET, is readily available and much less expensive than PET. This paper reports a case demonstrating the potential value of cerebral SPECT scanning with I-123 IMP, specifically in the serial evaluation of a schizophrenic patient with auditory hallucinations. The initial scan revealed focal areas of increased uptake in the caudate nuclei of the basal ganglia, and in the right temporal lobe. After pharmacological treatment with clinical improvemen

What do tinnitus, the perception of sounds without an internal or external source of noise, hyperacusis, the pathological hypersensitivity to noise, or misophonia, an intolerance to certain everyday noises, have in common, and what differentiates them? A large number of excellent studies focused in the last few decades on identifying the neural correlates of tinnitus, hyperacusis, or misophonia on the basis of central triple-network changes. In this perspective review we explicitly examine, possible differential and causal involvement of peripheral components as a presumptive trigger that may

OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations between auditory processing abilities, cognitive abilities, listening ability, and reading ability in children.
DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study involving 155 children (105 referred for auditory processing assessment and 50 with no reported listening concerns) aged between 7 and 13 years. Each child was assessed on auditory processing tests, cognitive tests, and a reading test. Additional data on reading ability were provided by the reading score from a national test. Questionnaires about the child's listening ability were completed by a parent,

Auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony is a form of hearing impairment in which cochlear outer hair cell function is spared but neural transmission in the auditory pathway is disordered. This condition, or group of conditions with a common physiologic profile, accounts for approximately 7% of permanent childhood hearing loss and a significant (but as yet undetermined) proportion of adult impairment. This paper presents an overview of the mechanisms underlying auditory neuropathy/dys-synchrony-type hearing loss and the clinical profile for affected patients. In particular it examines the perceptual
