Body integrity identity disorder (BIID) is a rare condition characterised by a discrepancy between specific areas of an individual's perceived body image and body schema which causes the individual to disassociate those physical areas of their body from their internal representation. There are currently no efficacious, ethically unambiguous means for achieving long-lasting symptom reductions. In the case we present, two patients with BIID underwent an augmented reality (AR)-based simulation that virtually amputated their alienated limbs, allowing them to experience their ideal selves. During t

OBJECTIVE: For currently available augmented reality workflows, 3D models need to be created with manual or semiautomatic segmentation, which is a time-consuming process. The authors created an automatic segmentation algorithm that generates 3D models of skin, brain, ventricles, and contrast-enhancing tumor from a single T1-weighted MR sequence and embedded this model into an automatic workflow for 3D evaluation of anatomical structures with augmented reality in a cloud environment. In this study, the authors validate the accuracy and efficiency of this automatic segmentation algorithm for bra

BACKGROUND: Septic shock is a low-frequency but high-stakes condition in children requiring prompt resuscitation, which makes it an important target for simulation-based education.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to design and implement an augmented reality app (PediSepsisAR) for septic shock simulation, test the feasibility of measuring the timing and volume of fluid administration during septic shock simulation with and without PediSepsisAR, and describe PediSepsisAR as an educational tool. We hypothesized that we could feasibly measure our desired data during the simulation in 90% of th

INTRODUCTION: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) with superior mesenteric vein (SMV) reconstruction are often required to achieve complete (R0) resection for pancreatic head cancer (PHC) with tumor invasion of the SMV. Augmented reality (AR) technology can be used to assist in determining the extent of SMV involvement by superimposing virtual 3-dimensional (3D) images of the pancreas and regional vasculature on the surgical field.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three patients with PHC and tumor invasion of the SMV underwent AR-assisted PD with SMV resection and reconstruction following preoperative compute

BACKGROUND: Stroke-related sensory and motor deficits often steal away the independent mobility and balance from stroke survivors. Often, this compels the stroke survivors to rely heavily on their non-paretic leg during weight shifting to execute activities of daily living (ADL), with reduced usage of the paretic leg. Increased reliance on non-paretic leg often leads to learned nonuse of the paretic leg. Therefore, it is necessary to measure the contribution of individual legs toward one's overall balance. In turn, techniques can be developed to condition the usage of both the legs during one'

Augmented reality (AR) is an emerging technology in which information is superimposed onto the real world directly in front of observers. AR images may behave as distractors because they are inside the observer's field of view and may cause observers to overlook important information in the real world. This kind of overlooking of events or objects is known as "change blindness." In change blindness, a distractor may cause someone to overlook a change between an original image and a modified image. In the present study, we investigated whether change blindness occurs when AR is used and whether

Augmented reality (AR) is a new technology in which various virtual elements are incorporated into the user's perception of the real world. The most significant aspect of AR is that the virtual elements add relevant and helpful information to the real scene. AR shares some important characteristics with virtual reality as applied in clinical psychology. However, AR offers additional features that might be crucial for treating certain problems. An AR system designed to treat insect phobia has been used for treating phobia of small animals, and positive preliminary data about the global efficacy

BACKGROUND: Surgical telementoring enables a remote expert surgeon (mentor) to guide an operating surgeon (mentee) during surgery and facilitates the transfer of surgical skills. However, commonly used audio and static visual cues are inadequate to demonstrate complex tool-tissue interactions. To overcome this limitation, dynamic augmented reality (AR)-based visual cues are overlayed on the operative field to demonstrate precise instrument movements.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this work was to evaluate dynamic AR cues and identify the most suitable cue that effectively demonstrates the requi

The goal of this protocol is to enhance dental anatomy education by developing and applying an augmented reality-assisted tooth-carving system (AR-ATCS). Tooth morphology is a fundamental component of dental education, requiring students to master complex three-dimensional (3D) anatomical structures and functional landmarks that are essential for clinical procedures such as restorative dentistry and endodontic treatment. Traditionally, these skills are acquired through wax-block carving exercises; however, this approach is often limited by low instructional efficiency and a substantial cogniti

INTRODUCTION: Placing mini-screws between teeth can risk contacting or damaging dental roots and injuring adjacent nerves, blood vessels or maxillary sinus when local anatomy is not visualised precisely. The latest digital advances in orthodontics have enabled three-dimensional (3D) virtual protocol designing, allowing orthodontists to simulate the orthodontic treatments and collaboratively map out the surgical intervention before procedures. Computed tomography (CT)-based surgical guides are strongly recommended for patients with delicate and complex anatomical conditions.

PURPOSE: Accurate registration between pre-operative anatomical models and intra-operative endoscopic views is essential for reliable Augmented reality (AR) guidance in pituitary surgery. While coarse alignment can be achieved using external facial reconstruction, it does not account for relative motion between the face and internal surgical targets. Precise alignment at the sella region further remains challenging due to the lack of direct depth information in monocular endoscopy.
METHODS: To identify an appropriate similarity metric for registration refinement, we conducted a grid search co

This case series evaluates the clinical application of augmented reality (AR) in temporomandibular joint arthroscopy, with a focus on improving accuracy in initial and secondary portal placement. Five patients underwent AR-assisted arthroscopy using preoperative CT-based virtual planning and intraoperative holographic visualization with the Microsoft HoloLens 2 and Xironetic's IntraOpVSP system. The AR interface enabled real-time alignment of surgical instruments with planned trajectories, resulting in successful joint access and completion of all intended procedures. The first portal was cons

PURPOSE: During image-guided therapy, cardiologists use 2-dimensional (2D) imaging modalities to navigate the catheters, resulting in a loss of depth perception. Augmented reality (AR) is being explored to overcome the challenges, by visualizing patient-specific 3D models or 3D shape of the catheter. However, when this 3D content is presented on a 2D display, important depth information may be lost. This paper proposes a hybrid 3D AR visualization method combining stereo 3D AR guidance with conventional 2D modalities.
METHODS: A cardiovascular catheterization simulator was developed consistin

Achieving renal access during percutaneous nephrolithotomy is challenging, with a complication rate of 10-20%. This study aims to assess a novel technique for planning access to the renal collecting system using augmented reality (AR). Using Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine software (DICOM 2-print), we generated 3-dimensional (3D) models of patients with different types of kidney stones (staghorn, lower pole, and pelvic stones) who underwent PCNL between 2018 and 2022. After viewing the patient's CT scans, surgeons explored the anatomical models using an AR system with a stereosc

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a rare condition characterized by pain along the distribution of the glossopharyngeal nerve. Surgical approaches via microvascular decompression represent a common treatment strategy. For this procedure, an understanding of the location of the cranial nerve and the offending vasculature is critically important. A mixed reality system was used to register patient-specific 3D models onto the patients head for operative planning and anatomical visualization. A 58-year-old female presented to neurosurgery with severe right-sided facial, tongue, and jaw pain unresponsi
