Multiple fingerprint and pattern recognition analysis on polysaccharides of four edible mushrooms.

Quality analysis of edible mushrooms based on polysaccharides is generally difficult due to their complicated structures and hard separation. Here, multiple fingerprint analysis of polysaccharides based on chromatographic and spectrometric techniques were developed, and then applied in comparative analysis of Auricularia heimuer (AH), Auricularia cornea (AC), Auricularia cornea 'Yu Muer' (ACY) and Tremella fuciformis (TF). Firstly, polysaccharides were obtained with the molecular weights between 1.783 × 106 and 6.774 × 106 Da. Then, complete hydrolysis by TFA and enzyme digestion by cellulase

Comparison of thickening properties of polysaccharides from four gelatinous edible fungi.

Polysaccharides from edible gelatinous fungi are promising natural thickeners for food applications, yet their thickening performance raries greatly among species. This study systematically compared the physicochemical and rheological properties of four polysaccharides extracted from Naematelia aurantialba, Auricularia auricula, Auricularia cornea var. Li., and Auricularia polytricha, and named NAP, AAP, ACP, and APP respectively. The physicochemical exhibited molecular weights (Mw) ranging from 2.80 × 106 to 3.11 × 106 Da. NAP and AAP were mainly composed of mannose, whereas ACP and APP were

Mammalian and Avian Larval Schistosomatids in Bangladesh: Molecular Characterization, Epidemiology, Molluscan Vectors, and Occurrence of Human Cercarial Dermatitis.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by blood flukes (Schistosoma spp.). Schistosomatids affect a wide array of vertebrate hosts, including humans. In the present study, multiple species of schistosomatids were identified by isolating schistosomatid cercariae (SC) from naturally infected snails. We also described different biotic and abiotic factors influencing SC infections in snails and reported human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) for the first time in Bangladesh. A total of 22,012 snails of seven species: Lymnaea auricularia, L. luteola, Indoplanorbis exustus, Physa acu

Investigations of intermediate host specificity help to elucidate the taxonomic status of Trichobilharzia ocellata (Digenea: Schistosomatidae).

The avian schistosomatid Trichobilharzia ocellata plays an important role as causative agent of cercarial dermatitis of humans in Europe. In order to improve the taxonomic knowledge on this parasite, studies of miracidial chemo-orientation as well as experimental infections of different snail species were conducted using strains of T. ocellata and T. franki. Both schistosomes exhibited a high intermediate host specificity. The miracidia clearly preferred the SCW (snail-conditioned water) of the respective natural intermediate host to SCW of other sympatric snail species. T. ocellata proved to

Forensic Research Progress on Bongkrekic Acid Poisoning.

Bongkrekic acid (BA) is a toxin with stable properties and no distinctive smell. It exists in common foods such as fermented edible grain products, potato products, spoiled tremella fuciformis and auricularia polytricha, as well as auricularia polytricha that has been soaked too long. It can easily cause food poisoning. At present, there is still a lack of complete method to detect BA, and no specific antidote of BA has been found. Therefore, BA poisoning is easy to be misdiagnosed or missed diagnosed, and its mortality rate remains high. In recent years, studies have revealed the toxic mechan

Sporothrix schenckii Isolated from Edible Black Fungus Mushrooms.

Sporothrix schenckii , a fungus which is pathogenic to humans, was recovered from imported desiccated black fungus mushrooms [ Auricularia polytrichia (Mont.) Sacc.] usually used in preparing Far Eastern cuisine. Identification was based on microscopic and gross morphology, dimorphism at 25 and 37°C and reactivity with fluorescein-labeled antibodies specific for the yeast-cell form of the fungus. This is the first known report of S. schenckii in or on edible mushrooms.

Unravelling the riddle of Radix: DNA barcoding for species identification of freshwater snail intermediate hosts of zoonotic digeneans and estimating their inter-population evolutionary relationships.

Radix spp. are intermediate host snails for digenean parasites of medical and veterinary importance. Within this genus, species differentiation using shell and internal organ morphology can result in erroneous species identification, causing problems when trying to understand the population biology of Radix. In the present study, DNA barcoding, using cox1 and ITS2 sequences, identified populations of Radix auricularia and Radix balthica from specimens originally morphologically identified as Radix peregra from the UK. Assessment of cox1 and ITS2 as species identification markers showed that, a

New perspectives for fascioliasis in Upper Egypt's new endemic region: Sociodemographic characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of Fasciola in humans, animals, and lymnaeid vectors.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is a significant vector-borne disease that has emerged in numerous tropical and subtropical countries causing severe health problems. Egypt is one of the fascioliasis endemic regions; however, the current situation in Upper Egypt is understudied, with only sporadic human cases or outbreaks. This study aims to highlight the sociodemographic characteristics of human fascioliasis in a newly emerged endemic area in Upper Egypt, along with risk factors analysis and the molecular characteristics of the fasciolid population in humans, animals, and lymnaeid snails. METHODOLOG

Untargeted GC × GC/HRMS profiling of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in dried edible mushrooms supported by multivariate statistical tools.

Mushrooms are valuable for their nutritional and medicinal properties. Although composition and properties of mushroom useful components are intensively studied, the main efforts are applied to rather large bioactive molecules: vitamins, polysaccharides, polyphenols, proteins, while volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds attracted less attention. To close this lacuna, GC × GCHRMS analysis based on SPME was conducted. Over 500 volatile and semi-volatile compounds were identified using NIST-23 library search, manual spectra interpretation, and retention indices in the samples of six popula

Complete mitochondrial genome of the radicine pond snail Radix plicatula (Gastropoda: Lymnaeidae).

Radix plicatula is broadly distributed in China, as well as Russia. It is one of the intermediate hosts of Fasciola species which leads to the spread of fascioliasis. Here, we first described the complete mitochondrial genome of R. plicatula. The mitogenome is 13,751 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes. The contents of each base are 30.7% A, 39.6% T, 15.7% G, and 13.9% C. The sequence is AT rich (70.3%). Mitochondrial phylogenomic analysis showed that R. plicatula is close to R. auricularia.

The avian schistosome Trichobilharzia franki in mice: Migration, pathogenicity, and the host immune response.

Cercarial dermatitis (CD; swimmer's itch) is a re-emerging skin disease caused by avian schistosomes, including Trichobilharzia franki. Here, we present morphological, genetic, and experimental evidence confirming the involvement of T. franki in recent CD outbreaks across Czechia. Ocellate furcocercariae were collected from Radix auricularia at four sites and identified as T. franki through ITS1 sequencing. Despite minor morphological differences from previously reported specimens, all isolates belonged to the genetically uniform T. franki "auricularia" clade. Experimental infection of mice wi

A faunistic survey of snails and their infection with digenean trematode cercariae in Bandar-e Anzali at the littoral of the Caspian Sea.

Trematodes are known as a diverse group of endogenous parasites, which snails as their intermediate hosts can dramatically affect parasite transmission dynamics. Snails play a key role in life cycles of digenean trematode. However, there has not been much faunistic surveys in terms of snails' distribution in Iran. The current study was aimed to identify snail's fauna and their current geographic distribution in four regions of Guilan province, Iran. Several species of snails (land and freshwater snails) were obtained from 4 different areas (2018-2019), and then samples were separately transfer

Survival kinetics of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica on dehydrated enoki and wood ear mushrooms during long-term storage.

Two specialty mushrooms have recently become novel vectors for foodborne outbreaks in the U.S.: fresh enoki and dried wood ear mushrooms were linked to a listeriosis and salmonellosis outbreak, respectively. The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival kinetics of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enterica on dehydrated enoki and wood ear mushrooms during long-term storage. Following heat dehydration, mushrooms were inoculated with either L. monocytogenes or S. enterica, allowed to dry for 1 h, and then stored for up to 180 d at 25 °C and 33% relative humidity. Both pathogens were en

Epidemiology of fascioliasis in the Koshi hills of Nepal.

Lymnaea auricularia race rufescens and Lymnaea luteola were shown to transmit F. gigantica in the Koshi hills of Nepal. The ecology of the snails was studied at nine different habitats in Hattikharka panchayat, the highest numbers occurring immediately after the end of the monsoon. Mature F. gigantica infections in the snails were detected from May to August and again in November. The prevalence of the infection in cattle was highest during the summer monsoon and in January and February. A control programme for fascioliasis based on these findings is suggested which requires that cattle be tre

Musculature of the penial complex: A new criterion in unravelling the phylogeny of Hygrophila (Gastropoda: Pulmonata).

The taxonomy of freshwater pulmonates (Hygrophila) has been in a fluid state warranting the search for new morphological criteria that may show congruence with molecular phylogenetic data. We examined the muscle arrangement in the penial complex (penis and penis sheath) of most major groups of freshwater pulmonates to explore to which extent the copulatory musculature can serve as a source of phylogenetic information for Hygrophila. The penises of Acroloxus lacustris (Acroloxidae), Radix auricularia (Lymnaeidae), and Physella acuta (Physidae) posses inner and outer layers of circular muscles a

Enhanced volatile fatty acid production from co-fermentation of spent mushroom waste and food waste with rumen microbes: Performance and mechanism.

OBJECTIVE: Co-fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass and food waste (FW) can enhance the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during anaerobic fermentation. However, the effect and mechanism of co-fermentation of Auricularia auricula waste (AW) with FW remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect and mechanism of co-fermentation of Auricularia auricula waste (AW) with food waste (FW) on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production. METHODS: Anaerobic fermentation experiments were conducted at different AW/FW ratios (1:0, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 0:1) based on volatile solids (VS). VS
