ParkMAE: a cross-linguistic masked autoencoder framework for robust Parkinson's disease detection from speech.

We introduce ParkMAE, a robust multilingual speech foundation model and comprehensive benchmarking system for Parkinson's disease assessment. We curated multiple large-scale speech datasets comprising approximately 750 h of pretraining data and 100 h of evaluation data across four languages and diverse clinical populations. Our self-supervised masked autoencoder approach, pretrained on this multilingual corpus, demonstrates superior performance achieving 39% F1 score for cross-linguistic diagnosis, outperforming existing acoustic markers (eGeMAPS) by a significant margin and maintaining compar

Machine learning to classify left ventricular hypertrophy using ECG feature extraction by variational autoencoder.

BACKGROUND: Traditional ECG criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) have modest diagnostic yield. OBJECTIVE: Develop and validate machine learning models for LVH diagnosis from ECG. METHODS: ECG summary features (rate, intervals, axis), R-wave, S-wave and overall-QRS amplitudes, and QRS voltage-time integrals (VTIQRS) were extracted from 12-lead, vectorcardiographic X-Y-Z-lead, and 3D (L2 norm) representative-beat ECGs. Latent features (30 per ECG) were extracted using a variational autoencoder (trained on unselected >1 million ECGs) from X-Y-Z-lead representative-beat ECG signals. L

Disentangled representational learning for anomaly detection in single-lead electrocardiogram signals using variational autoencoder.

Wearable technology enables the unsupervised recording of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. Analyzing these high-dimensional ECG data poses challenges regarding statistical approaches and explainability. This work investigates the feasibility of medically explainable anomaly detection through disentangled representational learning of ECGs and personalization to mitigate inter-subject variations. Five open-source ECG datasets were converted into a set of denoised one-second traces of lead I signal, each covering individual features such as wave morphologies and pathologies. A beta total correlat

Identifying disease-related microbes based on multi-scale variational graph autoencoder embedding Wasserstein distance.

BACKGROUND: Enormous clinical and biomedical researches have demonstrated that microbes are crucial to human health. Identifying associations between microbes and diseases can not only reveal potential disease mechanisms, but also facilitate early diagnosis and promote precision medicine. Due to the data perturbation and unsatisfactory latent representation, there is a significant room for improvement. RESULTS: In this work, we proposed a novel framework, Multi-scale Variational Graph AutoEncoder embedding Wasserstein distance (MVGAEW) to predict disease-related microbes, which had the abilit

Sequential Factorized Autoencoder for Localizing the Origin of Ventricular Activation From 12-Lead Electrocardiograms.

OBJECTIVE: This work presents a novel approach to handle the inter-subject variations existing in the population analysis of ECG, applied for localizing the origin of ventricular tachycardia (VT) from 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs). METHODS: The presented method involves a factor disentangling sequential autoencoder (f-SAE) - realized in both long short-term memory (LSTM) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) networks - to learn to disentangle the inter-subject variations from the factor relating to the location of origin of VT. To perform such disentanglement, a pair-wise contrastive loss is int

Denoising of Medical Ultrasound Images Using Variational Autoencoders Guided by Attention Mechanisms.

Ultrasound imaging, while widely used and clinically valuable, continues to face a major limitation, speckle noise. This type of noise interferes with the visibility of fine anatomical structures and can lower the clinician's diagnostic confidence. Traditional denoising methods often struggle to strike the right balance between effectively reducing noise and preserving essential image details. As a result, their usefulness in real-world, high-demand clinical settings remains limited. To address this ongoing challenge, we introduce a new denoising framework that combines large kernel attention

Latent Space Projections and Atlases, a Cautionary Tale in Deep Neuroimaging using Autoencoders.

This study introduces a deep learning framework for the inferential exploration of latent representations in 3D brain MRI, leveraging a simple convolutional autoencoder with a hierarchical encoder and a compact latent space. Trained on segmented gray matter images from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset, the model learns latent representations that preserve neuroanatomical structure and reflect clinical variability across cognitive status. Dimensionality reduction techniques (PCA, t-SNE, PLS, UMAP) were applied to visualize and interpret the latent space, correlatin

The trade-off between maximizing reconstruction and physiological interpretation of muscle synergies with autoencoders.

INTRODUCTION: In neuroscience, the muscle synergy method is a widely known computational approach for studying motor control from electromyographic (EMG) recordings. Standard algorithms for synergy extraction rely on a linearity assumption for synergy combination. However, the interactions between muscle groups and movement dynamics often exhibit non-linear characteristics, suggesting the need for alternative approaches. In this context, autoencoders (AEs) have been proposed as promising tools. However, previous studies focused on the reconstruction accuracy optimization and not on the structu

Classification of cervical cancer using Dense CapsNet with Seg-UNet and denoising autoencoders.

Cervical cancer is one of the deadly diseases that affects women, which requires periodic examinations to identify and treat any cancerous tumors at a preliminary stage. The most prevalent examination tool for cervical cancer prompt identification is the cervical smear (Pap smear) testing; however, due to human negligence, this examination method has an elevated probability of negative findings. Cervical cancer classification using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) has been extensively studied to enhance the conventional diagnostic process. Robust classification results were achieve

Cervical OCT image classification using contrastive masked autoencoders with Swin Transformer.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer poses a major health threat to women globally. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging has recently shown promise for non-invasive cervical lesion diagnosis. However, obtaining high-quality labeled cervical OCT images is challenging and time-consuming as they must correspond precisely with pathological results. The scarcity of such high-quality labeled data hinders the application of supervised deep-learning models in practical clinical settings. This study addresses the above challenge by proposing CMSwin, a novel self-supervised learning (SSL) fra

Breast Cancer Induced Bone Osteolysis Prediction Using Temporal Variational Autoencoders.

Objective and Impact Statement. We adopt a deep learning model for bone osteolysis prediction on computed tomography (CT) images of murine breast cancer bone metastases. Given the bone CT scans at previous time steps, the model incorporates the bone-cancer interactions learned from the sequential images and generates future CT images. Its ability of predicting the development of bone lesions in cancer-invading bones can assist in assessing the risk of impending fractures and choosing proper treatments in breast cancer bone metastasis. Introduction. Breast cancer often metastasizes to bone, cau

STRIVE: interpretable multimodal subtype discovery in Women's cancers using an attention-weighted joint variational autoencoder.

BACKGROUND: Breast, endometrial, and cervical cancers share a common challenge: molecular heterogeneity that single-modality profiling cannot fully resolve. Gene expression and DNA methylation capture distinct and partially non-overlapping regulatory programs, yet most subtyping frameworks treat them independently or merge them without accounting for modality-specific noise and scale. OBJECTIVE: To develop an interpretable multimodal framework that integrates transcriptomic and epigenomic signals for principled molecular subtype discovery and molecular patient stratification with exploratory

Hypergraph-Based Dual-Channel Improved Variational Autoencoder with Cross-Attention for Compound-Protein Interactions Identification.

Elucidating compound-protein interactions is crucial for early drug discovery, offering insights into molecular mechanisms and therapeutic potential. While wet-lab methods detect interactions, they suffer from false positives, high costs, and labor intensity. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop theoretical computational approaches for identifying interactions between compounds and proteins. This study introduces a novel hypergraph-based dual-channel theoretical framework integrating an enhanced variational autoencoder with a multihead cross-attention mechanism to identify potentia

spaMGCN: a graph convolutional network with autoencoder for spatial domain identification using multi-scale adaptation.

Spatial domain identification is crucial in spatial transcriptomics analysis. Existing methods excel with continuous and clustered distributions but struggle with discrete ones. We present spaMGCN, an innovative approach specifically designed for identifying spatial domains, especially in discrete tissue distributions. By integrating spatial transcriptomics and spatial epigenomic data through an autoencoder and a multi-scale adaptive graph convolutional network, spaMGCN outperforms baseline methods. Our evaluations demonstrate its effectiveness in recognizing discrete T cell zones in mouse spl

Segmenting Brain Tissues from Chinese Visible Human Dataset by Deep-Learned Features with Stacked Autoencoder.

Cryosection brain images in Chinese Visible Human (CVH) dataset contain rich anatomical structure information of tissues because of its high resolution (e.g., 0.167 mm per pixel). Fast and accurate segmentation of these images into white matter, gray matter, and cerebrospinal fluid plays a critical role in analyzing and measuring the anatomical structures of human brain. However, most existing automated segmentation methods are designed for computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging data, and they may not be applicable for cryosection images due to the imaging difference. In this paper,

Multiparameter Uncertainty Mapping in Quantitative Molecular MRI using a Physics-Structured Variational Autoencoder (PS-VAE).

Quantitative imaging methods, such as magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF), aim to extract interpretable pathology biomarkers by estimating biophysical tissue parameters from signal evolutions. However, the pattern-matching algorithms or neural networks used in such inverse problems often lack principled uncertainty quantification, which limits the trustworthiness and transparency, required for clinical acceptance. Here, we describe a physics-structured variational autoencoder (PS-VAE) designed for rapid extraction of voxelwise multi-parameter posterior distributions. Our approach integrate

Attention-Enhanced Autoencoder with Marginal-Variance-Regularized Feature Reconstruction for Imbalanced Insurance Policy-Ownership Classification.

Identifying the small group of customers who hold a given policy in severely imbalanced tabular data is a recurring screening problem in insurance analytics. This study considers binary caravan-insurance policy-ownership classification on the COIL 2000 benchmark, where the positive-class prevalence is below 6%. The benchmark is a single cross-section, so the label describes current ownership rather than a future purchase event. We propose an Attention-based Symmetric AutoEncoder (ASAE) that combines an auxiliary symmetric reconstruction branch, a channel attention gate, and a marginal log-vari
