Artificial intelligence in assisted localization of fetal ultrasound standard planes: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound imaging has become a vital clinical diagnostic tool due to its cost-effectiveness and absence of ionizing radiation. In fetal ultrasound, the precise localization of standard ultrasound planes is a prerequisite for subsequent quantitative analysis and diagnosis. However, manual identification is highly operator-dependent and subjective, and the multi-planar data acquired by three-dimensional (3D) fetal ultrasound present challenges for efficient localization within large datasets. The objective of this narrative review is to systematically summarize the res

Convolutional Neural Network Models for Automatic Preoperative Severity Assessment in Unilateral Cleft Lip.

BACKGROUND: Despite the wide range of cleft lip morphology, consistent scales to categorize preoperative severity do not exist. Machine learning has been used to increase accuracy and efficiency in detection and rating of multiple conditions, yet it has not been applied to cleft disease. The authors tested a machine learning approach to automatically detect and measure facial landmarks and assign severity grades using preoperative photographs. METHODS: Preoperative images were collected from 800 unilateral cleft lip patients, manually annotated for cleft-specific landmarks, and rated using a

Neurobiosensory and Visual Patterns of Attentional and Emotional Functioning in Children Using Machine Learning: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Attentional functioning in childhood emerges from the interaction between cognitive, behavioral, and emotional processes. Children with these vulnerabilities frequently exhibit executive function deficits, including working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and processing speed, which compromise the ability to regulate attention, plan, and organize tasks, and modulate emotional responses, highlighting the need for screening approaches that integrate multiple dimensions of child functioning. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate an automated, real-tim

Parieto-occipital grey matter abnormalities in children with Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from a hemizygous deletion of chromosome 7q11.23. The phenotype of WS consists of typical dysmorphic features, supravalvular aortic stenosis, infantile hypercalcemia and growth retardation. While language and facial recognition seem to be relatively spared, visuospatial constructive disabilities are a hallmark of the neurobehavioral profile of WS. In order to search for actual structural abnormalities underlying this precisely defined neurodevelopmental disorder, we performed anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 9 WS c

Automatic landmarking of cephalograms using active appearance models.

There have been many attempts to further improve and automate cephalometric analysis in order to increase accuracy, reduce errors due to subjectivity, and to provide more efficient use of clinicians' time. The aim of this research was to evaluate an automated system for landmarking of cephalograms based on the use of an active appearance model (AAM) that contains a statistical model of shape and grey-level appearance of an object of interest and represents both shape and texture variations of the region covered by the model. Multi-resolution implementation was used, in which the AAM iterate to

New technologies in airway management: A review.

The evolution of medical knowledge and technological growth have contributed to the development of different techniques and devices for airway management. These appear to play a role in optimizing the number of attempts and overall success, ultimately reducing the negative consequences of airway manipulation. In this literature review, we highlight the recent evidence regarding new technologies applied to airway management. Before intubation, every patient should have an individualized structured airway management plan. Technology can help with both airway evaluation and tracheal intubation. P

Multi-Modal Feature Fusion and Hierarchical Classification for Automated Equine-Human Interaction Behavior Recognition.

Automated recognition of equine-human interaction behaviors from video represents a significant challenge in computational ethology, with critical applications spanning animal welfare assessment, equine-assisted services evaluation, and safety monitoring in equestrian environments. Existing approaches to animal behavior recognition typically focus on single species in isolation, rely solely on facial expression analysis while ignoring full-body posture, or employ flat classification architectures that fail under the severe class imbalances characteristic of naturalistic behavioral datasets. Fine-grained facial phenotype-genotype analysis in Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is caused by anomalies of the short arm of chromosome 4. About 55% of cases are due to de novo terminal deletions, 40% from unbalanced translocations and 5% from other abnormalities. The facial phenotype is characterized by hypertelorism, protruding eyes, prominent glabella, broad nasal bridge and short philtrum. We used dense surface modelling and pattern recognition techniques to delineate the milder facial phenotype of individuals with a small terminal deletion (breakpoint within 4p16.3) compared to those with a large deletion (breakpoint more proximal than 4p16.3).
