The negative, mood-congruent cognitive bias described in depression, as well as excessive rumination, have been found to interfere with emotional processing. This study focuses on the assessment of facial recognition of emotions in patients with depression through a new set of dynamic virtual faces (DVFs). The sample consisted of 54 stable patients compared to 54 healthy controls. The experiment consisted in an emotion recognition task using non-immersive virtual reality (VR) with DVFs of six basic emotions and neutral expression. Patients with depression showed a worst performance in facial a

Auditory verbal hallucinations are hallmark symptoms of schizophrenia and are amongst the most disturbing symptoms of the disorder. Although not entirely understood, the relationship between the voice hearer and their voices has been shown to be an important treatment target. Understanding voice hearers' standpoints through qualitative analysis is central to apprehend a deeper comprehension of their experience and further explore the relevance of interpersonal interventions. Compared with other dialogical intervention, virtual reality-assisted therapy (Avatar Therapy) enables patients to be in

Cross-platform virtual environments allow users to experience interactive virtual places from a variety of peripherals, such as mobiles, computers or virtual reality headsets. These devices offer different interactivity and immersion levels, which shape the subjective experience of presence in the virtual space. Moreover, users may be provided with virtual representations, or avatars, to evolve in the environment. Controlling such avatars will likely induce a sense of embodiment and an identification toward these representations. When using cross-platform applications, users may have to transp

Virtual reality is increasingly employed in behavioral research, providing immersive environments that combine high levels of experimental control with ecological validity. Within virtual reality, humans are represented by digital characters - or avatars - whose realism and behavioral fidelity are crucial for studying social cognition. This study introduces an accessible method for constructing avatars with facial animations of eye gaze and expression that can be used by behavioral scientists. In two pre-registered experiments, we validate the use of these avatars for psychological research. I

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is a core impairment in psychotic disorders and is strongly associated with functional outcomes. Although social cognitive training is effective, challenges remain regarding skill generalization and accessibility. This study aimed to develop culturally adapted French- and English-Canadian versions of RC2S and to assess the feasibility and acceptability of remote delivery.
METHODS: Fourteen individuals with a psychotic disorder were assessed at baseline, offered 24 twice-weekly RC2S sessions with a therapist over 12 weeks, and reassessed post-intervention. Motivati

The broad spread of cooperative robots into many application domains has resulted in a demand for intuitive and effective solutions for teleoperated control. A relevant role in teleoperation has been assumed by impedance controllers, that allow the increase of stability and accuracy during interaction. This paper aims to test a teleoperation method based on an impedance controller, namely tele-impedance control, that is usable in unstructured environments since it relies only on wearable sensors. The proposed solution maps the joint stiffness and position of the human user, computed through si

As an artificial space extended from the physical environment, the virtual environment (VE) provides more possibilities for humans to work and be entertained with less physical restrictions. Benefiting from anonymity, one of the important features of VEs, users are able to receive visual stimuli that might differ from the physical environment through digital representations presented in VEs. Avatars and contextual cues in VEs can be considered as digital representations of users and contexts. In this article, we analyzed 21 articles that examined the creativity-boosting effects of different di

For some individuals with social anxiety disorders (SAD) comorbid with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), it is difficult to speak in front of others. Herein, we report the case of a patient with SAD comorbid with ASD who could not speak in front of others until she used a humanoid robot as her avatar. During the intervention, her personality changed from shy to outgoing, which is explained by the Proteus effect. These case findings suggest that interventions with a robot avatar might improve the motivation for individuals with SAD comorbid with ASD who cannot speak in front of others to communi

PURPOSE: This study assessed (1) the experience of the eating disorder voice in people with anorexia nervosa or in remission, and (2) the feasibility of creating and interacting with a computerised representation (i.e., avatar) of this voice.
METHODS: Twenty-one individuals with anorexia nervosa and 18 individuals who were in remission participated in the study. They reported on the characteristics of their eating disorder voice and created a personalised avatar (a visual and auditory representation of the eating disorder voice), using a computerised software. Participants assessed closeness

Virtual reality is rapidly evolving into a pragmatically usable technology for mental health (MH) applications. As the underlying enabling technologies continue to evolve and allow us to design more useful and usable structural virtual environments (VEs), the next important challenge will involve populating these environments with virtual representations of humans (avatars). This will be vital to create mental health VEs that leverage the use of avatars for applications that require human-human interaction and communication. As Alessi et al.1 pointed out at the 8th Annual Medicine Meets Virtua

Avatars can serve as virtual representations of a user's body, replicating their movements in real time within an immersive environment. When these movements are closely synchronized with those of the user, a sense of embodiment over the avatar is often experienced. Recent research shows that introducing spatial offsets between a user's real movements and those of their avatar can alter motor behavior, with users aligning with the distorted avatar. While previous studies have typically focused on upper-limb movements toward visual targets, it remains unclear how users respond to distortions wi

BACKGROUND: Face-to-face psychotherapy remains the gold standard for mental health treatment; however, it faces accessibility barriers, including geographical constraints, costs, and stigma. Although videoconferencing psychotherapy addresses some limitations, challenges with engagement and therapeutic alliance persist. Avatar-mediated telepsychotherapy (AMT) in a metaverse-informed virtual environment has been proposed as a possible extension of digitally delivered mental health care, combining digital accessibility with enhanced presence through anonymous avatar-mediated communication.

Effective collaboration in Virtual Reality depends on users' ability to accurately perceive the affordances of others within a shared space. This paper presents the first empirical investigation of how people judge others' reaching capabilities in Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs). We examined whether observers can reliably estimate the maximum horizontal reach distance of virtual actors, how different actor representations influence these perceptual judgments, and whether calibration feedback can improve estimation accuracy. Participants (N=35) judged the reachability of objects for virtu

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of death in the United States, disproportionately impacting veterans and posing significant risks to active duty service members (ADSMs). These challenges threaten both long-term health outcomes and operational readiness. In response, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA, often referred to as the VA) and the DoD launched an innovative initiative within the Veterans Affairs Virtual Medical Center (VMC): the Performance, Health, and Wellness Center (PHWC). Bringing subject matter experts together from the DoD and VA, the PHWC pilot levera

Treatment efficacy for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with poor insight is low. Insight refers to a patient's ability to recognize that their obsessions are irrational and that their compulsions are futile attempts to reduce anxiety. This case study presents the first application of virtual reality-assisted avatar therapy for OCD (VRT-OCD) in a patient with contamination OCD and ambivalent insight. Before treatment, the patient was not distanced from the content of his obsessions, which obstructed treatment progress. VRT-OCD aims to enhance insight by creating distance betwe

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gaming disorder [GD] risk has been associated with the way gamers bond with their visual representation (i.e., avatar) in the game-world. More specifically, a gamer's relationship with their avatar has been shown to provide reliable mental health information about the user in their offline life, such as their current and prospective GD risk, if appropriately decoded.
METHODS: To contribute to the paucity of knowledge in this area, 565 gamers (Mage = 29.3 years; SD =10.6) were assessed twice, six months apart, using the User-Avatar-Bond Scale (UABS) and the Gaming Disorder

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although avatars are now widely used in advertisement, entertainment, and business today, no study has investigated whether brain lesions in neurological patients interfere with brain activation in response to dynamic avatar facial expressions. The aim of our event-related fMRI study was to compare brain activation differences in people with epilepsy and controls during the processing of fearful and neutral dynamic expressions displayed by human or avatar faces.
METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we examined brain responses to dynamic facial

BACKGROUND: Patient monitoring is central to perioperative and intensive care patient safety. Current state-of-the-art monitors display vital signs as numbers and waveforms. Visual Patient technology creates an easy-to-interpret virtual patient avatar model that displays vital sign information as it would look in a real-life patient (eg, avatar changes skin color from healthy to cyanotic depending on oxygen saturation). In previous studies, anesthesia providers using Visual Patient perceived more vital signs during short glances than with conventional monitoring.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to study

Avatar-mediated interaction increasingly spans virtual live entertainment and real-time telepresence, making interoperability and end-to-end latency central to user experience. This Perspective and Overview article surveys interoperable and latency-aware avatar pipelines with an emphasis on deployment contexts across the Asia-Pacific (AP)region. After introducing core animation primitives (blendshape-based facial deformation and skeletal animation with linear blend skinning), interoperability is formalized as a three-layer stack: asset containers, semantic control interfaces (highlighting VRM
