Extinction blunts paraventricular thalamic contributions to heroin relapse.

Here, we use optogenetics and chemogenetics to investigate the contribution of the paraventricular thalamus (PVT) to nucleus accumbens (NAc) pathway in aversion and heroin relapse in two different heroin self-administration models in rats. In one model, rats undergo forced abstinence in the home cage prior to relapse testing, and in the other, they undergo extinction training, a procedure that is likened to cognitive behavioral therapy. We find that the PVT→NAc pathway is both sufficient and necessary to drive aversion and heroin seeking after abstinence, but not extinction. The ability of ext

Assessing the functions of self-injurious behavior: a case of assessment failure.

Seven attempts to assess the function of self-injurious behavior in a person with profound mental retardation are described. Although repeated correlational and experimental methods were implemented to determine the functional role of this behavior no clear functions were identified. A clinical implication of this case and that this methodology is not all-embracing. Different assumptions should be explored after substantial efforts have failed.

Functional considerations in the use of procedural timeout and in effective alternative.

Two single-subject experiments were conducted with students in special preschool classes. In Experiment I, the subject's disruptive, appropriate, and inappropriate play behaviors were measured as a function of three independent variables: reinforcement, a typical timeout procedure, and regularly paced teacher instructions. In an ABA reversal within a multiple baseline across two teachers, all three independent variables comprised the A conditions and procedural timeout was omitted in B. Experiment II examined a second subject's appropriate and inappropriate eating as a function of the same thr

Biologic Injection-Related Pain in Severe Asthma, Its Impact on Treatment Aversion, and Pain-Relief Approach: A Multicenter Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Although biologic therapies are essential for managing severe asthma, injection-related pain may be a frequently overlooked barrier to treatment persistence. OBJECTIVE: To quantify biologic injection-related pain in asthma cases, identify clinical factors associated with such pain and treatment aversion, and explore practical pain-relief approaches. METHODS: This multicenter observational study enrolled patients with asthma receiving biologics between May 2025 and March 2026. Insertion pain, injection pain, and treatment aversion attributable to injection-related pain were assess

A long-term follow-up of treatment for severe self-injury.

One of the shortcomings in the literature is the paucity of long-term follow-up reports of the treatment of self-injury and other destructive behavior, particularly of treatment involving contingent shock. This is a report of a long-term follow-up of treatment for a woman with severe mental retardation and severe self-injurious behavior (SIB) treated initially with the Self-Injurious Behavior Inhibiting System (SIBIS) in brief clinical trials. Programmed generalization and maintenance procedures consisted of treatment throughout all waking hours in all settings as well as during brief sessions

Components of the anorexia-cachexia syndrome: gastrointestinal symptom correlates of cancer anorexia.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related anorexia is traditionally considered part of a complex but ill-defined anorexia-cachexia syndrome in which anorexia is intimately associated with other gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and weight loss. We surveyed cancer patients with anorexia to learn more about the relationship between anorexia and these symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 22-item GI questionnaire assessed the severity of anorexia and the prevalence of concurrent GI symptoms, including taste changes, food aversions, altered sense of smell, and diurnal food intake changes. The relationship between a

Going "all out" pharmacologically? A re-examination of Berkman and Meyer's "alternative strategies and multiple outcomes in remediation of severe self-injury: going 'all out' nonaversively".

Berkman and Meyer (1988) is frequently cited as evidence of the effectiveness of positive-oriented programming approaches and in opposition to aversive procedures. In that report, Berkman and Meyer attributed reductions in a client's self-injurious behavior to their intervention. They appeared to rule out the possibility that medication could have been responsible for behavior changes by reporting that medication was held constant during their intervention. We have recently obtained medication records indicating that (a) Berkman and Meyer incorrectly reported their client's medication status d

Low-frequency stimulation depresses the primate anterior-cingulate-cortex and prevents spontaneous recovery of aversive memories.

Functional abnormalities in the dorsal-anterior-cingulate-cortex (dACC) underlie anxiety disorders and specifically post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Promising and common behavioral approaches have limited effectiveness and many subjects exhibit spontaneous recovery of fear, as also evident in animal models following extinction training. Here, we use low-frequency stimulation (LFS), a protocol shown to induce long-term depression, with the aim of affecting synaptic plasticity induced by fear acquisition and extinction. We use aversive conditioning of either tone or visual stimuli paired w

Using facial expressions as CSs and fearsome and disgusting pictures as UCSs: affective responding and evaluative learning of fear and disgust in blood-injection-injury phobia.

Two experiments examine use of an evaluative conditioning (EC) paradigm in the acquisition of fear and disgust responding to neutral facial expressions. In Experiment 1, 60 participants were randomly assigned to one of three evaluative learning conditions in which neutral facial expressions were paired with fearsome, disgusting, or neutral pictures. No statistically significant differences were detected between the three conditions. However, significant differences emerged within subjects as post-exposure of fear and disgust ratings were higher among expressions that were paired with pictorial

Rumination syndrome.

Rumination is a syndrome characterized by repetitive regurgitation of small amounts of food from the stomach. The food is then partially or completely rechewed, reswallowed, or expelled. This syndrome is relatively common in infants and mentally challenged persons, but it also occurs in adults with normal intelligence. The rumination syndrome is an underappreciated condition in adults who frequently receive a misdiagnosis of vomiting due to gastroparesis or gastroesophageal reflux. Difficulties in establishing the correct diagnosis may be caused by a lack of awareness of the condition among ph

Cell-type and projection-specific dopaminergic encoding of aversive stimuli in addiction.

Drug addiction is a major public health concern across the world for which there are limited treatment options. In order to develop new therapies to correct the behavioral deficits that result from repeated drug use, we need to understand the neural circuit dysfunction that underlies the pathophysiology of the disorder. Because the initial reinforcing effects of drugs are dependent on increases in dopamine in reward-related brain regions such as the mesolimbic dopamine pathway, a large focus of addiction research has centered on the dysregulation of this system and its control of positive rein

On the value of nonremovable reminders for behavior modification: an application to nail-biting (onychophagia).

The authors examined the effectiveness of a novel behavior modification method for dysfunctional and impulsive habits, based on nonremovable reminders (NrRs). NrRs were implemented by having participants wear nonremovable wristbands designated to constantly remind them of their resolution to quit the targeted habit (nail-biting). Participants were 80 nail-biters who resolved to quit. The NrR approach was contrasted with an aversion-based behavioral modification technique. Recovery was assessed after 3 and 6 weeks of treatment and in a 5-month follow-up. The NrR method was associated with lower

ApoE Isoform-Dependent Effects on Extinction of Contextual Fear Memory and Passive Avoidance Memory.

Following exposure to trauma, avoidance behavior can be protective but also contribute to severe symptoms and interfere with exposure-based therapy. Extinction of fear conditioning by exposure to the same environment or environmental cues that were present during the initial traumatic event but without including the aversive stimulus or stimuli is often used to study post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition characterized by an inability to suppress conditioned fear responses. A limitation of this paradigm is that one cannot avoid the context or cues associated with the initial trauma

Differential UCS expectancy bias in spider fearful individuals: evidence toward an association between spiders and disgust-relevant outcomes.

Recently, differential UCS expectancies were found for high- and low-predatory fear-relevant animals [Davey, G. C. L., Cavanagh, K., & Lamb, A. (2003). Differential aversive outcome expectancies for high- and low-predation fear-relevant animals. Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry, 34, 117-128]. The present study extends these findings to spider phobia. In a hypothetical experiment, high (n = 27) and low (n = 28) spider fearful individuals estimated the probability that slides of spiders, maggots, pit bull terriers, or rabbits would be followed by a sip of nauseating juice,

Modulating reward and aversion: Insights into addiction from the paraventricular nucleus.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction, characterized by compulsive drug use and high relapse rates, arises from complex interactions between reward and aversion systems in the brain. The paraventricular nucleus (PVN), located in the anterior hypothalamus, serves as a neuroendocrine center and is a key component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to explore how the PVN impacts reward and aversion in drug addiction through stress responses and emotional regulation and to evaluate the potential of PVN as a therapeutic target for drug addiction. METHODS: We review the

Therapeutic shock device (TSD): clinical evaluation with self-injurious behaviors.

A man with profound mental retardation and multiple topographies of severe self-injurious behavior (SIB) had been receiving contingent shock for SIB for 2 years before the study started. Shock was being delivered with a handheld shock stick (Hot Shot Sabre Six), which produced burns to the man's skin. SIB rate, without a shock contingency, was 10 responses/min. The Therapeutic Shock Device (TSD), worn by the client and remotely operated by a radio frequency signal, provided superior control of SIB (0.02 responses/min) compared with the shock stick (0.06 responses/min) without causing tissue da

A clinical investigation of the possible effects of long-term habituation of sexual arousal in assisted covert sensitization.

Behavior principles are naturally implicated in most of the behavior therapy techniques used in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions and sexual disorders. Hypotheses differ, however, in the extent to which behavior therapy procedures emphasize the classical conditioning of sexual arousal (e.g. penile responses) or the operant conditioning of deviant sexual behavior patterns, or other often ignored behavior principles such as habituation. The purpose of the present case study is to investigate the possibility that at least part of the clinical effects of a widely used behavior therapy technique
