Mangroves are critical marine resources for their remarkable ability to tolerate seawater. Antioxidant enzymes play an especially significant role in eliminating reactive oxygen species and conferring abiotic stress tolerance. In this study, a cytosolic copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SaCSD1) cDNA of Sonneratia alba, a mangrove species with high salt tolerance, was successfully cloned and then expressed in Escherichia coli Rosetta-gami (designated as SaCSD1). SaCSD1 comprised a complete open reading frame (ORF) of 459 bp which encoded a protein of 152 amino acids. Its mature protein is predi

Heavy metal contamination from industrial activities in coastal regions can lead to pollution in mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves produce antioxidant compounds to mitigate the impact of free radicals. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between the concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu and antioxidant activity in Avicennia alba and Excoecaria agallocha mangroves from areas affected by industrial activities and conservation areas, Banyuasin, South Sumatra, Indonesia. This study was conducted in September 2023 with sampling locations in the Payung Island area and the Barong River conserv

Mangrove canopy height (MCH) has been described as a leading characteristic of mangrove forests, protecting coastal economic interests from hurricanes. Meanwhile, winter temperature has been considered the main factor controlling the MCH along subtropical coastlines. However, the MCH in Cedar Key, Florida (∼12 m), is significantly higher than in Port Fourchon, Louisiana (∼2.5 m), even though these two subtropical locations have similar winter temperatures. Port Fourchon has been more frequently impacted by hurricanes than Cedar Key, suggesting that hurricanes may have limited the MCH in Port F

BACKGROUND: Talaromyces C. R. Benj., is a large and taxonomically important genus within Ascomycota, established to accommodate the teleomorphs of certain Penicillium Link, species and is now recognized as a monophyletic lineage distinct from Penicillium. Multigene phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that species formerly placed in Penicillium subgenus Biverticillium belong within Talaromyces, leading to their reclassification under the single-name nomenclature system. Currently, the genus comprises 237 species arranged into nine sections supported by multi-locus phylogeny. Species of Talaromyc

BACKGROUND: Microbial infections are diverse and cause serious human diseases. Candida albicans infections are serious healthcare-related infections that are complicated by its morphological switching from yeast to hyphae, resistant biofilm formation and mixed infections with bacteria. Due to the increase in drug resistance to currently used antimicrobial agents and the presence of undesirable side effects, the need for safe and effective novel therapies is important. Compounds derived from plants are known for their medicinal properties including antimicrobial activities. The purpose of the s

Coastal wetlands, including mangrove-cordgrass mosaics, are among Earth's most effective carbon stores sequestering >1 Pg C/year. Rapid sea level rise, warming, and storm intensification are now reshaping these habitats. Vegetation type influences root exudates, sediment redox profiles, and organic matter quality. However, the impacts of vegetation on microbe-virus networks that mediate carbon burial and nutrient cycling remain unclear. Here, we sampled coastal sediment profiles in patches of cordgrass (dominated by Sporobolus alterniflorus), black mangrove (Avicennia germinans), and seagrass

BACKGROUND: Mangroves are dynamic coastal ecosystems that provide a rich habitat for diverse microorganisms. Streptomyces strain RMIT01 was isolated from the rhizosphere of the mangrove Avicennia marina located in Jawbone Sanctuary, Williamstown, Victoria, Australia. This study aimed to characterize RMIT01's genomic and biochemical traits, optimize its antifungal production, and explore its biosynthetic gene clusters to predict potential antifungal compounds.
METHODS: The RMIT01 strain was characterized using International Streptomyces Project (ISP) media series to observe morphological trait

OBJECTIVES: To provide a better understanding of sleeping sickness transmission and spread in mangrove areas to optimize its control.
METHODS: In the Forecariah mangrove area, Guinea, 19 sleeping sickness cases and 19 matched controls were followed up in their living areas (at home, in fields and at water points). All occupational sites and pathways were mapped and then placed in their environmental context.
RESULTS: The sleeping sickness cases displayed a significantly broader and more diverse spatial occupation than the controls. They covered double the daily walking distances of controls

COVID-19 is a deadly pandemic caused by Corona virus leading to millions of deaths worldwide. Till today no medicine was available to cure this disease. This study selected 262 potential bioactive natural products derived from mangroves to inhibit the main protease (Mpro) and receptor-binding domain (RBD) protein of the COVID-19 virus. All the ligands were subjected to Adsorption Digestion Metabolism Excretion and Toxicity (ADMET) predictions and docking studies using AutodockVina. Among all the ligands, NP_143 (Shearinine A) and NP_242 (Amentoflavone), having the highest docking score of 10.2

Mangrove ecosystems represent critical coastal blue carbon sinks, whose ecological stability is essential for sustaining carbon sequestration capacity and coastal ecological security. Hyblaea puera, a dominant defoliating pest in mangrove habitats, exhibits abrupt population outbreaks and extreme destructive potential, severely threatening the integrity of blue carbon ecosystems. While conventional broad-spectrum chemical insecticides deliver adequate control efficacy, they often exert detrimental effects on non-target organisms and adjacent coastal marine environments, conflicting with core m

This study was conducted at eight different sites of the mangrove ecosystem in Kaozhou Yang, Huidong District, Huizhou Guangdong, South China Sea. The concentration of nutrients ( NH 4 + , NO 2 - , NO 3 - , PO 4 3 - and SiO 3 2 - ) was determined (both water and soil samples). Based on the nutrient concentration, the comparison of mangrove biomass production, total organic matter and bacterial count were also investigated. The level of nutrient values and biomass production of mangrove and bacterial count in both water and soil samples followed the same trend. The re

Cancer is a serious group of diseases that is a huge problem on a global scale and is the second most common cause of death. Commonly used therapies do not always lead to the complete elimination of diseased cells or tissues and are also burdened with side effects that reduce the quality of life of patients. Due to these difficulties, new therapeutic approaches are still being sought. In recent years, there has been a return to interest in natural methods of treating various diseases, among which phytochemicals are particularly interesting. This article reviews plant extracts with anticancer p
