Effects of pituitary adenylate cyclase polypeptide (PACAP) on extinction of active avoidance learning in rats: involvement of neurotransmitters.

The effects of PACAP-38 on the extinction of active avoidance learning were studied in rats. The action of transmitter mediation was followed by pretreating the animals with appropriate receptor antagonists. PACAP-38 administered into the lateral brain ventricle caused a transitory facilitation of the extinction of a learned active avoidance response at 3 and 6 h following extinction, which had returned to or even above the control level at the 24-h testing. PACAP 6-38, which is an antagonist of PACAP-38, and an antibody against PACAP-38, prevented this action. When the animals were retested d

Corticosterone enhances long-term retention in one-day-old chicks trained in a weak passive avoidance learning paradigm.

Glucocorticoids are released during learning situations and can trigger neural actions through binding to receptors in different brain areas. The possible role of a glucocorticoid action in long-term memory formation was studied, in day-old chicks, by using a passive avoidance task which chicks otherwise only retain for a few hours (< 10) after training. Thus, we examined the effects of intracerebral corticosterone administration on retention 24 h posttraining. The results showed that chicks injected with corticosterone (1 microgram) at either 15 min pretraining or at 5, 30, 60 min (but not 12

Association of Brain Reward Learning Response With Harm Avoidance, Weight Gain, and Hypothalamic Effective Connectivity in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

IMPORTANCE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with adolescent onset, severe low body weight, and high mortality as well as high harm avoidance. The brain reward system could have an important role in the perplexing drive for thinness and food avoidance in AN. OBJECTIVE: To test whether brain reward learning response to taste in adolescent AN is altered and associated with treatment response, striatal-hypothalamic connectivity, and elevated harm avoidance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional multimodal brain imaging study, adolescents and young adults with AN were mat

The acute inhibition of rapid eye movement sleep by citalopram may impair spatial learning and passive avoidance in mice.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is known to be essential for memory. Hence, REM sleep deprivation impairs memory processes. The frequently prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are known to cause REM sleep deprivation and to impair cognitive performance in humans and rodents. We suggested that impaired memory processes by citalopram in C57/BL6 mice could be explained by the acute inhibition of REM sleep. We hypothesized that those acute citalopram 5 and 10 mg/kg injections induced REM sleep deprivation, altered cognitive performance in passive avoidance, impaired spatial me

Reversible inactivation of the insular cortex by tetrodotoxin produces retrograde and anterograde amnesia for inhibitory avoidance and spatial learning.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX; a voltage-sensitive sodium channel blocker) was microinjected bilaterally into the insular (IC), frontal (FC), or parietal (PC) cortex or the ventral caudate nucleus of rats either before or after they were trained in an inhibitory avoidance task. When administered either before or after training, injections of TTX into the IC impaired performance on a 48-hr retention test. Injections of TTX into the PC also impaired retention when administered before training. One week later, rats with cannulae in the IC, FC, and PC received microinjections of TTX either before or after tra

Endurance exercise improves avoidance learning and spatial memory, through changes in genes of GABA and relaxin-3, in rats.

Different exercise patterns, neurotransmitters, and some genes have numerous effects on learning and memory. This research aims to investigate the long-term effects of submaximal aerobic exercise on spatial memory (SM), passive avoidance learning (PAL), levels of serum relaxin-3, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), RLN3 gene, and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65/67 genes) in the brainstem of adult male Wistar rats. Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: aerobic exercise groups, performed on a treadmill running (TR), for 5 weeks (Ex5, n = 10), 10 weeks (Ex10, n = 10), invo

Effects of pregnancy experience on ovarian senescence and longevity in Hatano rats bred for high- and low-avoidance learning.

We investigated the effects of pregnancy experience on ovarian senescence and longevity using two inbred strains of Hatano rats. These strains have been selectively bred for high- and low-avoidance animals (HAA and LAA, respectively), but the HAA line has a slower onset of ovarian senescence and a shorter lifespan compared with the LAA line. The onset of abnormal estrous cycles and survival curves were compared between nulliparous and parous rats in each line. In the HAA line, pregnancy experience did not change the onset of ovarian senescence but increased longevity. This suggests that a pitu

The dual effect of CA1 NMDA receptor modulation on ACPA-induced amnesia in step-down passive avoidance learning task.

It is well documented that cannabinoids play an important role in certain hippocampal memory processes in rodents. On the other hand, N-Methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) mediate the synaptic plasticity related to learning and memory processes which take place in the hippocampus. Such insights prompted us to investigate the influence of dorsal hippocampal (CA1) NMDA receptor agents on amnesia induced by cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist, arachidonylcyclopropylamide (ACPA) in male mice. One-trial step-down passive avoidance and hole-board apparatuses were used to examine the memory retrieval

Dorsal hippocampal cannabinoid CB1 receptors mediate the interactive effects of nicotine and ethanol on passive avoidance learning in mice.

The present study evaluated the involvement of the dorsal hippocampal cannabinoid CB1 receptors in the combined effect of ethanol and nicotine on passive avoidance learning in adult male mice. The results indicated that pre-training administration of ethanol (1 g/kg, i.p.) impaired memory retrieval. Pre-test administration of ethanol (0.5 and 1 g/kg, i.p.) or nicotine (0.5 and 0.7 mg/kg, s.c.) significantly reversed ethanol-induced amnesia, suggesting a functional interaction between ethanol and nicotine. Pre-test microinjection of a selective CB1 receptor agonist, ACPA (3 and 5 ng/mouse), plu

Immunohistochemical estimation of brain choline acetyltransferase and somatostatin related to the impairment of avoidance learning induced by thiamine deficiency.

We have found that thiamine-deficient (TD) rats show significant impairment of avoidance learning on the 25th day after the start of TD diet, as measured by passive-avoidance task. Administration of physostigmine (0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) from the 14th day after the start of TD diet improved the impairment of avoidance learning to the pair-fed (PF) control level by the 25th day. However, the recovery effect of physostigmine did not occur on the 25th day when the treatment was begun on the 21st day. To ascertain the correlation between the cholinergic neuronal function in rat brain and the avoidance le

Proactive and retroactive effects of hippocampal stimulation on active avoidance learning, hippocampal EEG and brain acetylcholinesterase activity in cats.

The subject of this investigation were the effects of electrical stimulation of the hippocampus on the acquisition of active avoidance response (AAR) in a shuttle-box. The stimulation (200 microamperes, 50/s, negative rectangular pulses of 1.0 ms duration) was applied once for 10 s before or after each training session. It was found that the application of hippocampal stimulation before each session facilitated the acquisition of AAR; discontinuation of the stimulation after training did not cause a decrease of AAR performance. Application of the stimulation after each session inhibited learni

How working memory and reinforcement learning interact when avoiding punishment and pursuing reward concurrently.

Humans learn adaptive behaviors via a durable but incremental reinforcement learning (RL) system and a fast but fleeting working memory (WM) system. Past work parsing these systems focused on reward learning alone; hence, little is known about how they interact while simultaneously learning to avoid punishment and whether arbitrating between these demands is disrupted by psychiatric symptoms. We administered a novel reward/punishment RL-WM task to an online sample oversampled for depression and anxiety symptoms (N = 298; n = 275 after quality control). Participants avoided punishment during in

A Machine Learning Algorithm Avoids Unnecessary Paracentesis for Exclusion of SBP in Cirrhosis in Resource-limited Settings.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Despite the poor prognosis associated with missed or delayed spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) diagnosis, <15% get timely paracentesis, which persists despite guidelines/education in the United States. Measures to exclude SBP non-invasively where timely paracentesis cannot be performed could streamline this burden. METHODS: Using Veterans Health Administration Corporate Data Warehouse (VHA-CDW) we included patients with cirrhosis between 2009 and 2019 who underwent timely paracentesis and collected relevant clinical information (demographics, cirrhosis severity, medic

Relation among, trait anxiety, intolerance to uncertainty and early maltreatment experiences on fear discrimination learning and avoidance generalization online task.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Early aversive experiences, which have been associated with elevated anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty (IUS), may contribute negatively to fear conditioning learning. The aim of the present study was to analyze the relation among individual differences in childhood maltreatment experiences, trait anxiety, and IUS in adulthood; and to determine how these variables could affect fear learning discrimination and avoidance generalization. METHODS: We adapted an avoidance procedure in an online fear learning task. Two pictures of different lamp colors (CS+) were firs

Functional correlation between GABAergic and dopaminergic systems of dorsal hippocampus and ventral tegmental area in passive avoidance learning in rats.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the existence of possible functional correlation between GABA-A and dopamine (DA) receptors of the dorsal hippocampus and the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in passive avoidance learning. Two guide cannulas were stereotaxically implanted in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus and the VTA of male Wistar rats. In order to measure memory retrieval, the animals were trained in a step-through type passive avoidance task and tested 24 h after training. Attenuation of scopolamine-induced learning deficits by LVV-hemorphin-7 in rats in the passive avoidance and water maze paradigms.

Central administration of angiotensin IV (Ang IV) analogues attenuates scopolamine-induced amnesia. Ang IV mediates its effects by binding to a high affinity, binding site, AT(4) receptor, that has recently been identified as insulin regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the distinct AT(4) ligand, LVV-hemorphin-7 (LVV-H7), on scopolamine-induced learning deficits, one which involves fear-conditioning and the other spatial learning. Rats were pretreated with an intracerebroventricular (ICV) dose of scopolamine hydrobromide followed by treatment

Learning to fear and cope with a natural stressor: individually and socially acquired corticosterone and avoidance responses to biting flies.

Animals learn to recognize and respond to a variety of dangerous factors, with biting and blood-feeding flies being among the most prevalent of natural stressors. Here we describe the behavioral avoidance and hormonal (corticosterone) stress responses to biting fly exposure and the roles of individual and social learning in the acquisition of these fear-associated responses. Male mice exposed to a single 30-min session of attack by intact biting flies (stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans L.) exhibited increased plasma corticosterone levels and active self-burying responses to avoid the flies.
