Integrated γ/α spectrometry of natural radioactivity and PHITS Monte Carlo dosimetric assessment of Balengou kaolin, Cameroon.

This study investigates the radiological characteristics and potential health implications of Balengou kaolin, a clay widely mined in Western Cameroon, used as a building material and distributed nationwide for geophagy and cosmetic purposes. Fifteen kaolin samples and ten surrounding control soil samples were collected, prepared, and analysed using a NaI(Tl) γ-ray spectrometer to determine 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K activity concentrations and establish an environmental baseline for earthen building materials. Complementary α-spectrometric analyses quantified uranium and thorium isotopes on six se

Enhancement of natural radioactivity in fertilized soil of Faisalabad, Pakistan.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND, GOAL, AND SCOPE: Natural radioactivity in phosphate rock (PR) is transferred to phosphate fertilizer (PF) during the manufacturing process of the PF. The continuous addition of the PF to the cultivated soil accumulates the radionuclides in the land and increases the level of radioactivity in the soil. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the enhanced level of accumulated radioactivity due to the continuous addition of the PF in the farmlands of Nuclear Institute of Agriculture and Biology (NIAB) at Faisalabad in Pakistan. The selected study area consisted

A universal radiation protection system based on individual standardised integrated doses.

A 'Universal Radiation Protection System' (URPS) is proposed in this paper with a novel philosophy, concept and methodology. It applies a 'Standardised Integrated Dose System' (SIDS) based on health risk limits for workers and public, no matter where they live in the world. The URPS assigns equal radiation health risk limit to an individual by integrating doses from national natural background (NBG) radiation and from man-made sources. For public, the SIDS integrates doses from planned exposure situations within a dose limit (e.g. 1 mSv y(-1)) on top of the mean national NBG dose in a country.

Radiogeochemistry, mineralogy, lithology, radiogenic heat production, and health implication using airborne radiometric data of Ilesha and its surroundings.

The current study analyzed and interpreted airborne radiometric data from Ilesha's basement complex rock and its surroundings. At the surface, the concentrations of the most frequent primordial radionuclides notably K, elemental concentration of uranium eU, and elemental concentration of thorium eTh were measured. The weighted mean elemental and activity concentrations were 0.85%, 2.75 ppm, 10.22 ppm, and 267.54 Bq kg-1, 34.41 Bq kg-1, 41.51 Bq kg-1 for 40 K, 238U, and 232Th, respectively. The low concentration of 40 K was certainly due to the effects of weathering, kaolinization of granites,

Hematological and neurological impact studies on the exposure to naturally occurring radioactive materials.

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) contribute to everyone's natural background radiation dose. The technologically advanced activities of the gas and oil sectors produce considerable amounts of radioactive materials as industrial by-products or waste products. The goal of the current study is to estimate the danger of long-term liability to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TE-NORM) on blood indices, neurotransmitters, oxidative stress markers, and β-amyloid in the cerebral cortex of rats' brains. Twenty adult male albino rats were divided into t

Radiation Exposure and Health Effects - is it Time to Reassess the Real Consequences?

Our acceptance of exposure to radiation is somewhat schizophrenic. We accept that the use of high doses of radiation is still one of the most valuable weapons in our fight against cancer, and believe that bathing in radioactive spas is beneficial. On the other hand, as a species, we are fearful of exposure to man-made radiation as a result of accidents related to power generation, even though we understand that the doses are orders of magnitude lower than those we use everyday in medicine. The 70th anniversary of the detonation of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was marked in 2015.

Stray light correction on array spectroradiometers for optical radiation risk assessment in the workplace.

The European directive 2006/25/EC requires the employer to assess and, if necessary, measure the levels of exposure to optical radiation in the workplace. Array spectroradiometers can measure optical radiation from various types of sources; however poor stray light rejection affects their accuracy. A stray light correction matrix, using a tunable laser, was developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As tunable lasers are very expensive, the purpose of this study was to implement this method using only nine low power lasers; other elements of the correction matrix b

Residential mobility and associated factors in relation to the assessment of exposure to naturally occurring radiation in studies of childhood cancer.

Migration, that is the study subjects moving from one residential address to another, is a complication for epidemiological studies where exposures to the agent of interest depend on place of residence [corrected]. In this paper we explore migration in cases from a large British case-control study of childhood cancer and natural background radiation. We find that 44% of cases had not moved house between birth and diagnosis, and about two-thirds were living within 2 km of their residence at birth. The estimated dose at the diagnosis address was strongly correlated with that at the birth address

[The hormonal functions regulating carbohydrate metabolism in participants in the cleanup of the sequelae of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station with a neurocirculatory dystonia syndrome].

Radioimmunoassay revealed in participants of Chernobyl disaster sequelae preclinical changes of some hormonal functions: moderate increase of the basal concentration of blood insulin, somatotropin, C-peptide against the background of persistent hypercortisolemia. Increase of the level of "hyperglycemic" hormones (cortisol, somatotropin, C-peptide) is explained by adaptative and compensatory reactions of the body in response to lesioning effects of ionizing radiation and other negative factors of the Chernobyl accident. Relative hyperinsulinemia is, apparently, compensating the total hyperglyce

ENHANCED RADIOACTIVE CONTENT OF 'BALANCE' BRACELETS.

During a routine whole body counting measurement of a worker at the Nuclear Research Center Negev, abnormal activities of (232)Th and (238)U were measured. After a thorough investigation, it was found that the radioactivity was due to a rubber bracelet ('balance bracelet') worn by the worker during the measurement. The bracelet was counted directly by an high pure germanium gamma spectrometry system, and the specific activities determined were 10.80 ± 1.37 Bq g(-1) for (232)Th and 5.68 ± 0.88 Bq g(-1) for natural uranium. These values are obviously high compared with normally occurring radioac

Aetiology of childhood leukaemia.

The acute leukaemias account for about 30% of all malignancy seen in childhood across the Western world. A peak incidence of precursor B cell ALL has emerged as socio-economic conditions have improved in countries worldwide. From twin studies and the use of neonatal blood spots it has been possible to back track the first initiating genetic events within critical haemopoietic cells to foetal development in utero for most precursor B cell ALL and some cases of AML. These events may occur as part of normal foetal development. Whether other factors (environmental or constitutional) are involved t

Prevalence of oral submucous fibrosis in the high natural radiation belt of Kerala, south India.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a crippling disorder which is confined almost exclusively to the Indian subcontinent. Despite its association with a significantly increased risk of cancer, the etiology is still not clear. An epidemiological assessment showed 0.4% prevalence for OSMF in Kerala, South India, which is among the highest recorded. Recently the National Tumour Registry in Trivandrum reported the highest recorded site-specific incidence rate for oral cancer (ICD 140-145) in this area. The coastal belt of the Trivandrum and Quilon districts of Kerala has a very high natural radioact

Application of whole-body personal TL dosemeters in mixed field beta-gamma radiation.

Application of whole-body personal TL dosemeters based on a high-sensitivity LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-N) in mixed field beta-gamma radiation has been characterised. The measurements were carried out with (90)Sr/(90)Y, (85)Kr and (137)Cs point sources to calculate the energy response and linearity of the TLD response in a dose range of 0.1-30 mSv. From the result, calibration curves were obtained, enabling the readout of individual dose equivalent Hp(10) from gamma radiation and Hp(0.07) from beta radiation in mixed field beta-gamma.
