TiO2 Nanoparticles Trigger Gut-to-Gill Bacterial Translocation and Dysbiosis in Zebrafish.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) are widely produced and persist in aquatic ecosystems, yet their indirect effects on host-microbe interactions remain poorly defined. By using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a sentinel species, this study investigated the effects of subchronic 5 mg/L TiO2-NP exposure. Dynamic light scattering was utilized to characterize the bimodal aggregates (peaks at 917 and 46,841 nm; surface charge: +22.08 mV) that define the environmental state of TiO2-NPs. Parallel 16S rRNA metagenomic profiling on Day 6, prior to mortality, revealed profound gut dysbiosis. A marked

Mesenteric Ischemia and Bacterial Translocation Precipitate the Intoxication Phase of Yellow Fever.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever (YF) is classically conceptualized as a hepatotropic disease; indeed, the liver is the primary site of yellow fever virus (YFV) replication. However, circumstantial evidence suggests that extrahepatic disease may be important for the approximately 30% of YF cases that progress to the severe "intoxication" phase of the disease. METHODS: Using a Syrian hamster-adapted (HA) YFV, we worked backwards from observations in humans to examine early events that precipitate the intoxication phase of YF. RESULTS: HA-YFV caused severe disease in approximately 80% of infected anim

Polymicrobial pericarditis caused by bacterial and fungal translocation from an oesophageal ulcer.

This case report discusses a rare instance of polymicrobial pericarditis in a man in his early 60s with a history of substance abuse. The patient presented with chest pain and shortness of breath, later diagnosed as pericarditis caused by Streptococcus anginosus, S. intermedius and Candida glabrata, likely originating from a large adjacent oesophageal ulcer. The condition led to critical illness, requiring pericardiocentesis, antibiotic and antifungal therapy. Despite initial improvement, the patient experienced recurrence and ultimately underwent pericardectomy. The article emphasises the rar

Asphyxia-Induced Bacterial Translocation in an Animal Experimental Model in Neonatal Piglets.

BACKGROUND: The term "bacterial translocation" (BT) refers to the migration of bacteria or their products from the gastrointestinal tract to tissues located outside it, and may occur after intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury. The term "endotoxin" is synonymous, and is used interchangeably with the term lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS, a component of Gram-negative gut bacteria, is a potent microbial virulence factor, that can trigger production of pro-inflammatory mediators, causing localized and systemic inflammation. The aim of this study is to investigate if neonatal asphyxia provokes BT an

The use of animal models to study bacterial translocation during acute pancreatitis.

Infection of pancreatic necrosis with intestinal flora is accepted to be a main predictor of outcome during severe acute pancreatitis. Bacterial translocation is the process whereby luminal bacteria migrate to extraintestinal sites. Animal models were proven indispensable in detecting three major aspects of bacterial translocation: small bowel bacterial overgrowth, mucosal barrier failure, and disturbed immune responses. Despite the progress made in the knowledge of bacterial translocation, the exact mechanism, origin and route of bacteria, and the optimal prophylactic and treatment strategies

[Bacterial translocation from the gastrointestinal tract: catalyst of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome].

The abnormal colonization of gastrointestinal tract (GIT), the loss of the intestinal barrier function, the bacterial translocation (BT) are signs of intestinal insufficiency which are supposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of MODS. This worsens the condition or leads to lethal outcome in patients after major abdominal surgery in ICU. The goal of this investigation was to consider the scientific and clinical evidence for the BT role in the pathogenesis of MODS and to present evidence about the advantages and the efficiency of antibiotic combination Amikacin plus Clindamycin as a new thera

Comparison of bacterial translocation during traumatic shock and hemorrhagic shock in rats.

UNLABELLED: Traumatic shock has been classified as a kind of hypovolemic shock similar to hemorrhagic shock. Since bacterial translocation has been observed in shock, this study investigated the difference in bacterial translocation during traumatic shock and hemorrhagic shock, and considered this effect on lung injury during sepsis. METHODS: Forty-eight male or female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups, hemorrhagic shock and traumatic shock. Bacterial translocation, endotoxin, and blood gas were evaluated. Alterations of the lungs morphologically and functionally were observed.

Effect of total parenteral nutrition plus morphine on bacterial translocation in rats.

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the hypothesis that gut stasis induced by parenteral morphine sulfate (MS) leads to enhanced bacterial translocation in rats on total parenteral nutrition (TPN). SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: TPN and MS are common adjuncts in the care of critically ill patients. TPN is known to provoke a variable degree of translocation. MS induces gut stasis with an accompanying bacterial overgrowth. The effect of these two treatments in combination on translocation is not known. METHODS: Rats were provided with central and subcutaneous lines for the continuous infusion of nutrients

CRB1-associated retinal degeneration is dependent on bacterial translocation from the gut.

The Crumbs homolog 1 (CRB1) gene is associated with retinal degeneration, most commonly Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Here, we demonstrate that murine retinas bearing the Rd8 mutation of Crb1 are characterized by the presence of intralesional bacteria. While normal CRB1 expression was enriched in the apical junctional complexes of retinal pigment epithelium and colonic enterocytes, Crb1 mutations dampened its expression at both sites. Consequent impairment of the outer blood retinal barrier and colonic intestinal epithelial barrier in Rd8 mice led to the trans

Bacterial translocation occurs early in cirrhosis and triggers a selective inflammatory response.

BACKGROUND: Experimental data suggest that bacterial translocation (BT) promotes systemic inflammation, portal hypertension, and circulatory dysfunction in advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD). METHODS: Patients with ACLD undergoing hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurement and absence of acute decompensation or infections were included (n = 249). Serum biomarkers of BT (lipopolysaccharide [LPS], lipoteichoic acid [LTA], bacterial DNA [bactDNA]), systemic inflammation and markers of circulatory dysfunction were assessed. T-cell subsets in intestinal biopsies (n = 7 ACLD, n = 4 cont

Single versus double experimental bile duct ligation model for inducing bacterial translocation.

BACKGROUND: Double common bile duct ligation plus section in rats is used as a model for bacterial translocation, a phenomenon that has been correlated with the degree of liver damage. This study analyzes whether a simpler variant of the technique is also a valid model to study bacterial translocation. METHODS: Fifty-six male Sprague Dawley rats underwent one of three surgical interventions: a) proximal double ligation and section of the common bile duct; b) proximal simple ligation of the bile duct; and c) sham operation. Bacterial translocation was measured by cultures of mesenteric lymph n

Bacterial translocation in mesenteric ischemia-reperfusion injury: is dysfunctional motility the link?

The authors previously reported that mesenteric ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) in a chronic newborn piglet model creates dysfunctional intestinal motility. Whether this leads to inadequate bacterial clearance and translocation (BT) through the gastrointestinal tract remains unclear. To test this hypothesis the authors used their chronic piglet model (weight, 3.5 +/- 0.3 kg; age, 18 +/- 4 days; on formula feeding); nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia was induced via reversible pericardial tamponade. Mesenteric flow (SMA Doppler measurement via the retroperitoneal approach) was decreased to 25% +/-

T lymphocytes in host defense against bacterial translocation from the gastrointestinal tract.

Flow cytofluorometric analyses of lymphocytes harvested from the mesenteric lymph node (MLN), mucosal epithelium, and lamina propria of C57BL/6 mice demonstrate that expression of alpha/beta or gamma/delta T-cell receptors (TCR) and CD4 or CD8 molecules by T lymphocytes in the intestinal immune system varies depending upon their anatomic location. The MLN contained equivalent numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, the vast majority of which were alpha/beta TCR positive (alpha/beta TCR+). The lamina propria T cells were predominantly CD4+ and alpha/beta TCR+, while the intestinal intraepithelial lym
