Clinical microbiology and infection : the official publication of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases2015eng
Since the 1950s, medical communities have been facing with emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, and emerging pathogens are now considered to be a major microbiologic public health threat. In this review, we focus on bacterial emerging diseases and explore factors involved in their emergence as well as future challenges. We identified 26 major emerging and reemerging infectious diseases of bacterial origin; most of them originated either from an animal and are considered to be zoonoses or from water sources. Major contributing factors in the emergence of these bacterial infections are:

Brucellosis is bacterial zoonoses. In endemic areas brucellosis can present with clinical features of nearly any neurological illness. Meningitic presentation is most common, with patient presenting with either acute or chronic meningitis. Pseudotumor--like presentation is also documented and accounts for only 4% of cases of neurobrucellosis. Here we are documenting a case of neurobrucellosis with presentation similar to pseudotumor cerebri but with abnormal CSF. This highlights the fact that being a potentially treatable condition brucellosis should always come in the differential diagnosis o

BACKGROUND: Infectious disease agents pose significant threats to humans, wildlife, and livestock, with rodents carrying a third of these agents, many linked to human diseases. However, the range of pathogens in rodents and the hotspots for disease remain poorly understood.
AIM: This study evaluated the prevalence of viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens in Mastomys natalensis rodents in riverine and non-riverine areas in selected districts in Zambia.
METHODS: The study applied metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS). Tissues analysed included semen, foetal tissues, and blood-rich

The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, founded in 1910 by Friedrich Loeffler, the discoverer of the first animal virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, is the oldest virological research facility in the world. Beyond viruses, its area of competence has significantly expanded since its foundation and now also covers bacterial, parasitic and prion diseases of livestock, poultry and aquatic animals. Presently located at four sites within Germany (Insel Riems, Jena,Tübingen,Wusterhausen) the tasks of the institute as delineated in the Animal Disease Act encompass research on infectious animal diseases inc

Acute febrile illness (AFI) investigations are crucial for public health. They can provide data on disease prevalence, morbidity, and mortality, and improve treatment, management, control, and detection of outbreaks in areas with limited diagnostic tests. Current understanding of multiple causes of AFI in the paediatric population in Tanzania is limited. This study aimed to simultaneously detect 33 pathogens using TaqMan Array Card based real-time PCR. Whole blood samples were collected from a total of 247 children (2-59 months old) who presented with febrile illness at Dareda and Haydom hospi

As modern naval operations increasingly occur in littoral and tropical marine environments, the threat of marine zoonoses-infectious diseases transmitted from marine organisms to humans-has emerged as a potent asymmetric challenge. Unlike conventional military threats, these pathogens bypass hardware defenses and instead target personnel, compromising mission readiness, creating operational delays, and threatening force health protection. This review explores the biological and operational dimensions of marine zoonoses, including bacterial, parasitic, viral, and toxin-related risks such as Vib

Various aspects of current problems in the field of public health will be commented on in an introductory paper. Attention will mainly be paid to three subjects, viz. zoonoses, food hygiene and environmental pollution. Recent developments in the field of so-called classical and currently emerging zoonoses will be briefly discussed with reference to the specific papers which will be presented by specialists during the course of the day. In the field of food hygiene, problems of bacterial and chemical contamination of foods of animal origin will be referred to. Modern aspects related to drastica

Zoonotic illnesses, which are spread by vertebrate animals to human beings, are dangerous to the health of the population, the well-being of animals, and the livestock industry. This research evaluated the incidence, transmission, and effects of zoonoses in some of the urban and rural localities. Samples of human, livestock, and vectors were examined using serological, microbiological, and molecular analyses using a cross-sectional design. The data on risk factors and disease outcomes were collected using structured questionnaires and field observations, and statistical analysis assessed the r

Brucella species are intracellular bacterial pathogens that cause brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide. This review traces how Brucella, first discovered in the 19th century through investigations of human and bovine disease, became a modern experimental model system. Work on Brucella has illuminated how intracellular bacteria evade and adapt to host defenses and how they remodel host cell biology to establish a replicative niche. It has also yielded insights that extend beyond pathogenesis into bacterial cell envelope architecture and development. Though long regarded as a s

The global epidemic of multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium DT104 provides an important example, both in terms of the agent and its resistance, of a widely disseminated zoonotic pathogen. Here, with an unprecedented national collection of isolates collected contemporaneously from humans and animals and including a sample of internationally derived isolates, we have used whole-genome sequencing to dissect the phylogenetic associations of the bacterium and its antimicrobial resistance genes through the course of an epidemic. Contrary to current tenets supporting a single homogeneous epidem

Streptococcus suis serotype 2 is a major Gram-positive swine pathogen, causing also zoonoses. We describe here the immunoprotective activity in an in vivo animal model of a serotype-2 cell wall protein, designated Sat, which was identified by a previously validated proteomics approach consisting of the protease digestion of live bacteria and the selective recovery of exposed domains, followed by LC/MS/MS analysis. Increased survival rate (80%) and decreased bacterial burden were observed in mice immunized with a recombinant Sat fragment, suggesting that this protein is a potential vaccine cand

Brucellosis is one of the most common bacterial zoonoses worldwide. Infection is usually chronic and sometimes lifelong. Different mechanisms can be postulated as to the basis for the induction of the chronic status of brucellosis, but a comprehensive knowledge is still lacking. Here, we carried out a series of experiments in order to assess if the persistence of Brucella abortus could be ascribed to the effect of a down regulation of the immune response due to activity of regulatory T cells. We demonstrate that CD4+CD25+T regulatory cells are able to limit the effectiveness of CD4+T cells and

Raising a small flock of poultry for eggs, meat, and possibly companionship is becoming an increasingly popular hobby in the United States. Domestic chickens (Gallus gallus, forma domestica), turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo, forma domestica), and members of the family Anatidae including ducks, geese, and swans are commonly kept in these privately owned backyard flocks. Multiple bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic diseases which affect poultry are known zoonotic pathogens. This article reviews these zoonoses and gives recommendations for flock biosecurity, as well as for prevention of infectio

Background: The burden of zoonotic diseases in developing countries is significantly underestimated, influenced by various factors such as misdiagnosis, underreporting, natural disasters, climate change, resource limitations, rapid unplanned urbanization, poverty, animal migration, travel, ecotourism, and the tropical environmental conditions prevalent in the region. Despite Sri Lanka's provision of a publicly funded free health care system, zoonoses still contribute significantly to the burden of communicable diseases in the country. This study serves as a timely and exhaustive systematic rev

Antimicrobial-producing strains and their bacteriocins hold great promise for the control of bacterial diseases, being an attractive alternative to antibiotics. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the inhibitory activity of 15 bacteriocin-producing staphylococci and mammaliicocci (BP-S/M) strains and their pre-purified extracts with butanol (BT) against a collection of 27 harmful or zoonotic strains (including Gram-positive/-negative bacteria and molds) with relevance in the public health and agro-food fields. These indicators (excluding Gram-negative strains) were grouped into seven c

Zoonotic pathogens pose a grave threat to the development of animal husbandry and human health. As antibiotics have been extensively and excessively utilized, the issue of bacterial resistance has intensified. Bacteriophage therapy for bacterial infections has regained prominence due to its strong specificity and low propensity for developing bacterial resistance. However, constraints persist in the clinical application of bacteriophage therapy. By interrupting transmission routes, bacteriophages offer broader prospects for preventing and controlling the infection and dissemination of zoonotic

Bats have received considerable recent attention for infectious disease research because of their potential to host and transmit viruses, including Ebola, Hendra, Nipah, and multiple coronaviruses. These pathogens are occasionally transmitted from bats to wildlife, livestock, and to humans, directly or through other bridging (intermediate) hosts. Due to their public health relevance, zoonotic viruses are a primary focus of research attention. In contrast, other emerging pathogens of bats, such as bacteria, are vastly understudied despite their ubiquity and diversity. Here, we describe the curr

The public's health and the financial sustainability of international societies remain threatened by bacterial zoonoses, with limited reliable diagnostic and therapeutic options available for bacterial diseases. Bacterial infections influence mammalian miRNA expression in host-pathogen interactions. In order to counteract bacterial infections, miRNAs participate in gene-specific expression and play important regulatory roles that rely on translational inhibition and target gene degradation by binding to the 3' non-coding region of target genes. Intriguingly, according to current studies, that

Reference laboratories are of central importance for consumer protection. Field expertise and high scientific competence are basic requirements for the nomination of a national reference laboratory. To ensure a common approach in the analysis of zoonotic hazards, standards have been developed by the reference laboratories together with national official laboratories on the basis of Art. 33 of Directive (EG) No. 882/2004. Reference laboratories function as arbitrative boards in the case of ambivalent or debatable results. New methods for detection of zoonotic agents are developed and validated

Integrating the control of multiple neglected zoonoses at the community-level holds great potential, but critical data is missing to inform the design and implementation of different interventions. In this paper we present an evaluation of an integrated health messaging intervention, using powerpoint presentations, for five bacterial (brucellosis and bovine tuberculosis) and dog-associated (rabies, cystic echinococcosis and leishmaniasis) zoonotic diseases in Sidi Kacem Province, northwest Morocco. Conducted by veterinary and epidemiology students between 2013 and 2014, this followed a process
