Bacteroides fragilis as an unusual cause of neonatal pyogenic arthritis: A case report.

We present a rare case of neonatal bone infection caused by Bacteroides fragilis without predisposing risk factors in an otherwise healthy newborn. The infant initially presented with symptoms of sepsis, including fever, irritability, and reduced limb movement, prompting an extensive workup that eventually revealed Bacteroides fragilis in joint fluid PCR analysis. Treatment involved multi-agent antibiotics targeting anaerobic organisms and a joint washout procedure. This case highlights the importance of molecular diagnostics in detecting uncommon pathogens in neonatal bone infections and guid

beta-lactamases in bacteroides.

Bacteroides fragilis is responsible for most anaerobic infections in man. Most isolates of B. fragilis show resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. This resistance might be due to beta-lactamase production or permeability barrier in the cell wall. B. fragilis produce beta-lactamase with mainly cephalosporinase activity. Other Bacteroides species such as B. clostridiformis, B. melaninogenicus and B. oralis also produce beta-lactamase but with different biochemical characteristics.

MALDI - TOF MS for the identification of obligate anaerobes and metronidazole susceptibility of anaerobic Gram negative bacilli.

MALDI-TOF MS, though has facilitated rapid and accurate anaerobe identification, the problem of rising metronidazole resistance amongst the members of Bacteroides fragilis group is cause for concern. In this one-year study period,152 anaerobic Gram negative bacilli and 60 Gram positive anaerobes were isolated from 167 samples obtained from clinically suspected anaerobic infections. Bacteroides fragilis accounted for 56 % of the total anaerobic GNB and Peptoniphilus asacchrarolyticus was the most commonly isolated Gram positive cocci. All isolates were identified by the MALDI-TOF MS except one

Gut Bacteroides act in a microbial consortium to cause susceptibility to severe malaria.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium species and remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Gut bacteria can influence the severity of malaria, but the contribution of specific bacteria to the risk of severe malaria is unknown. Here, multiomics approaches demonstrate that specific species of Bacteroides are causally linked to the risk of severe malaria. Plasmodium yoelii hyperparasitemia-resistant mice gavaged with murine-isolated Bacteroides fragilis develop P. yoelii hyperparasitemia. Moreover, Bacteroides are significantly more abundant in Ugandan children with severe malar

[Trovafloxacin in gynecology].

Presence of microorganisms in the female lower genital tract (LGT) in concentrations that modify the established normal equilibrium produce different symptoms that make necessary to consult the gynecologist. It is currently accepted that infections of the LGT are due to microorganisms that are normally integrating the internal flora, except for the erroneously called "sexually transmitted diseases" that are caused by external microorganisms. This means that all those microorganisms usually present without causing any disease manifestations may, under certain circumstances and determined concen

[Isolation of anaerobes during a 30-month observation at a hospital microbiology laboratory].

The authors evaluate retrospectively the results obtained from the research of anaerobial bacteria on 1313 samples received at the Microbiology Laboratory of the "Ospedale Civile di Ivrea" over a period of 31 months (6/1/86-12/31/88). From this evaluation, high percentages of detection of anaerobic bacteria are emerging in the following infections: appendiculare abscesses (60%), intestinal operations (71%), wounds (57%), tubovarian abscesses (100%), as well as thoracic empyema (50%). Also relevant are the isolations from skin and subcutaneous tissues: breast infections (50%) preputial infectio

[Infections by anaerobes in children: frequency of isolation and antimicrobial resistance].

We studied the frequency of isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility of strict anaerobic bacteria isolated in a paediatric hospital. A total of 1,753 samples from purulent material and hemocultures were processed. One hundred and thirty strains were isolated from 95 children: 44 from 48 cases of peritonitis (91.7%), 2 from 8 brain abscesses (25%), 23 from 124 soft tissue abscesses (18.5%), 4 from 64 empyemas or lung abscesses (6.3%) and 22 from 1,509 hemocultures (1.5%). Mixed infection (anaerobic and aerobic bacteria) was detected in 38.5% of the cases; however, in peritonitis 81.3% of the

Haemin deprivation renders Bacteroides fragilis hypersusceptible to metronidazole and cancels high-level metronidazole resistance.

BACKGROUND: Infections with Bacteroides fragilis are routinely treated with metronidazole, a 5-nitroimidazole antibiotic that is active against most anaerobic microorganisms. Metronidazole has remained a reliable treatment option, but resistance does occur, including in B. fragilis. OBJECTIVES: In this study we tested whether haemin, a growth supplement for B. fragilis in vivo and in vitro, had an influence on the susceptibility of resistant B. fragilis strains to metronidazole. We further tested whether haemin-deprived B. fragilis would be more susceptible to oxygen and oxidative stress. Met

Topical therapeutics for otitis media.

In chronic draining ear associated with a tympanic membrane perforation, cholesteatoma, or both, the infection is that of bacterial contamination. Both aerobic and anaerobic organisms are found, notably pseudomonas, staphylococcus, and enteric organisms, particularly bacteroides. The disease exists because of a structural defect in the middle ear cleft, which requires surgery as definitive treatment. Medical therapy is valuable as a temporary measure in preoperative preparation, and in prevention and management of intracranial extension. Topical therapy with antibiotic ear drops is often helpf

Activity of imipenem against Pseudomonas and Bacteroides species.

The activity of imipenem against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacteroides fragilis in vitro was studied. MICs of imipenem for P. aeruginosa are approximately 2 micrograms/m. Unlike most other beta-lactam antibiotics, imipenem does not show cross-resistance in the presence of intrinsic resistance. Imipenem is a strong inducer of Id beta-lactamase but is stable to hydrolysis by this enzyme. B. fragilis is more susceptible to imipenem than to other beta-lactam antibiotics. The activity of imipenem against B. fragilis is similar to that of metronidazole. The cephalosporinases of B. fragilis do not i

The underappreciated in vitro activity of tedizolid against Bacteroides fragilis species, including strains resistant to metronidazole and carbapenems.

Because Bacteroides fragilis has the ability to develop mechanisms of resistance to almost all antibiotics, we studied the comparative in vitro activity of tedizolid against 124 Bacteroides group species clinical isolates, including carbapenem, metronidazole and piperacillin-tazobactam resistant strains. Tedizolid had an MIC90 of 2 μg/ml (range, 0.5-4 μg/ml) and was 1-4 times more active than linezolid that had an MIC90 of 8 μg/ml (range, 2-16 μg/ml). It was also active (MICs 0.5-2 μg/ml) against the 27 ertapenem, 2 metronidazole and 12 piperacillin-tazobactam resistant strains tested. This su

Species Distribution and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Anaerobic Bacteria Recovered from Clinical Specimens in Warsaw University Hospitals.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize the distribution of anaerobic bacteria isolated from clinical specimens across major specimen types and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the most frequently isolated species. METHODS: Clinical specimens collected in 2022 from three university hospitals in Warsaw were analyzed. Anaerobes were identified using MALDI-TOF MS, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed according to EUCAST guidelines. A total of 1,425 isolates were included and classified as Gram-negative anaerobic bacilli (GNAB), Gram-positi

[Therapy for severe anaerobic infections with clindamycin (author's transl)].

Ten adult patients with severe Bacteroides infections were treated with 0.9 approximately 1.8 g/day of parenteral or oral clindamycin, and a child was treated with 0.3 g/day orally. Remarkable responses and cures were obtained in all the patients, who had no underlying diseases and pure anaerobic infections; a case of sepsis, two cases of liver abscess, a case of subcutaneous abscess and a case of spinal epidural abscess. The other six patients who had ultimately fatal underlying diseases or mixed infections did not respond well to the combination of clindamycin and the other antibiotics thera
