Causes of visual loss and their risk factors: an incidence summary from the Barbados Eye Studies.

OBJECTIVES: To summarize incidence and risk factors for each main cause of visual loss in an African-Caribbean population and discuss the implications of these data from a public health perspective. METHODS: A nationally representative cohort (n = 4 709; ages 40-84 years at baseline) had ophthalmic and other examinations over 9 years. Incidence rates were estimated by the product-limit approach. Risk factors were evaluated from Cox regression models. RESULTS: Average incidence was ~ 0.1% per year for blindness (< 6/120) and 0.7% per year for low vision (< 6/18 to 6/120), increasing steeply w

Intergenerational childhood trauma: associations by subtype across two generations in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort.

Background: Intergenerational continuity of childhood trauma is a major public health concern. Better understanding of patterns can inform prevention, particularly for subtypes beyond physical abuse and in underserved populations. Objective: This study examined associations between parent and offspring histories of childhood maltreatment in a longitudinal Barbados birth cohort, with a focus on subtype-specific patterns of continuity. Method: Using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), we assessed childhood maltreatment in Generation 1 (G1; N = 68) and their emerging adult off

Updated checklist of semi-terrestrial and estuarine crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) of Barbados, West Indies.

Considering the growing threats to the biodiversity of small Caribbean islands (e.g., habitat loss and fragmentation, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change), it is important to establish biodiversity inventories that serve as baselines for monitoring and evaluation of conservation efforts. In Barbados (West Indies), the most recent comprehensive taxonomic account of brachyuran crabs came from Rathbun (1921) reporting the specimens collected by the University of Iowa Barbados-Antigua Expedition in 1918. The present study fills the 100-year gap in knowledge by providing an updat

Biological activity of barbados cherry (acerola fruits, fruit of Malpighia emarginata DC) extracts and fractions.

Fractionation of barbados cherry (acerola fruit, a fruit of Malpighia emarginata DC.) extracts were performed by organic solvent extractions and column chromatographies, using two extraction methods. Higher cytotoxic activity was concentrated in fractions A4 and A6 (acetone extract), and H3 and HE3 (hexane extract). These four fractions showed higher cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines such as human oral squamous cell carcinoma (HSC-2) and human submandibular gland carcinoma (HSG), when compared with that against normal cells such as human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLF) and hu

Prevalence, molecular characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of MRSA in hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients in Barbados.

The epidemiology and clonality of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has not been investigated, as not much research or surveillance has been undertaken to identify and characterize the circulating MRSA strains in Barbados. Prevalence rates, molecular characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of MRSA infections in hospitalized and nonhospitalized patients were investigated. A total of 293 isolates were included in the study, with 100 from the hospital and 193 from the public health laboratory. Isolates were collected over a period of 1 (2015-2016) and 3 years (20

Evaluation of the association between OPA1 polymorphisms and primary open-angle glaucoma in Barbados families.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the OPA1 gene are associated with two primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) subgroups: those with elevated intraocular pressure (POAG/IOP) and those with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) in the African-Caribbean population of Barbados, West Indies. METHODS: SNPs at intervening sequence (IVS) 8, +4, and +32 of the OPA1 gene were directly sequenced from 48 individuals with POAG/IOP, 48 nonglaucomatous controls, and 61 people with NTG. The remaining exons of OPA1 were screened for sequence variations in the same 48 POAG/IOP part

Viral metagenomics reveals the presence of novel Zika virus variants in Aedes mosquitoes from Barbados.

BACKGROUND: The Zika virus (ZIKV) epidemic of 2015/2016 spread throughout numerous countries. It emerged in mainland Latin America and spread to neighboring islands, including the Caribbean island of Barbados. Recent studies have indicated that the virus must have already been circulating in local mosquito populations in Brazil for almost 2 years before it was identified by the World Health Organization in 2015. Metagenomic detection assays have the potential to detect emerging pathogens without prior knowledge of their genomic nucleic acid sequence. Yet their applicability as vector surveilla

Adverse risk factor trends limit gains in coronary heart disease mortality in Barbados: 1990-2012.

BACKGROUND: Although most countries face increasing population levels of obesity and diabetes their effect on coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality has not been often studied in small island developing states (SIDs) where obesity rates are among the highest in the world. We estimated the relative contributions of treatments and cardiovascular risk factors to the decline in CHD mortality from 1990 to 2012 in the Caribbean island, Barbados. METHODS: We used the IMPACT CHD mortality model to estimate the effect of increased coverage of effective medical/surgical treatments and changes in major

Knowledge and Attitudes of Cervical Cancer Screening Among Caribbean Women: A Qualitative Interview Study From Barbados.

The purpose of this study was to explore Barbadian women's attitudes toward and knowledge of routine cervical cancer screening (Pap tests). We conducted semi-structured individual interviews with fourteen female patients between the ages of 20 and 60 years who attended a selected public clinic in Barbados in May and June 2013. Interviews were audio-recorded with participants' consent. The interviews were then transcribed verbatim and, using thematic content analysis, indexed and coded inductively for emerging similar themes. We identified four themes: (1) women had poor knowledge of the purpos

Co-learning during the co-creation of a dengue early warning system for the health sector in Barbados.

Over the past decade, the Caribbean region has been challenged by compound climate and health hazards, including tropical storms, extreme heat and droughts and overlapping epidemics of mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika. Early warning systems (EWS) are a key climate change adaptation strategy for the health sector. An EWS can integrate climate information in forecasting models to predict the risk of disease outbreaks several weeks or months in advance. In this article, we share our experiences of co-learning during the process of co-creating a dengue EWS for the he

Profiles and behavioral consequences of child abuse among adolescent girls and boys from Barbados and Grenada.

The current study used latent class analysis to uncover groups of youths with specific abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual) profiles in and outside the family, and identify how membership in each abuse group is associated with behavioral outcomes. Data were collected among a sample of male (n = 662; Mage = 13.02 years) and female (n = 689; Mage = 12.95 years) children and adolescents (9-17 years old) from Barbados and Grenada. Self-report surveys were completed by participants in school settings. Three latent classes of child abuse were distinguished among boys, including 'low abuse' (39.2%

Inbound medical tourism to Barbados: a qualitative examination of local lawyers' prospective legal and regulatory concerns.

BACKGROUND: Enabled by globalizing processes such as trade liberalization, medical tourism is a practice that involves patients' intentional travel to privately obtain medical care in another country. Empirical legal research on this issue is limited and seldom based on the perspectives of destination countries receiving medical tourists. We consulted with diverse lawyers from across Barbados to explore their views on the prospective legal and regulatory implications of the developing medical tourism industry in the country. METHODS: We held a focus group in February 2014 in Barbados with law

Exploring the development and prevention of the childhood obesity epidemic in Barbados using the socio-ecological framework: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Barbados is currently experiencing an epidemic of childhood obesity, representing an urgent public health concern. The government has implemented policies encouraging healthier lifestyles. Concurrently, civil society organisations have undertaken numerous bottom-up initiatives and advocacy. Despite these efforts, there is little knowledge about how different community partners and sectors experience and perceive these initiatives or how local contextual factors affect their success. Understanding these perspectives is crucial to inform culturally appropriate and sustainable initi
