Establishment of a human induced pluripotent stem cell line, KMUGMCi008-A, from a patient with A Say-Barber-Biesecker-Young-Simpson variant of Ohdo syndrome bearing heterozygous frameshift mutation in the KAT6B gene.

Ohdo syndrome Say-Barver-Biesecker-Young-Simpson (SBBYS) variant is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized mainly by intellectual disability, developmental delays, contractures of the knees and hips contractures, thyroid dysfunction, and dysmorphic appearance. The Ohdo syndrome SBBYS variant is caused by heterozygous loss of function mutation in the KAT6B gene. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a patient carrying heterozygous frameshift mutation of the KAT6B gene were reprogrammed using the CytoTune-iPS2.0 Sendai Reprogramming Kit. The mutation in the KAT6B gene causes the

[Historical notes on the management of infection during the development of surgery].

Surgery and medicine have not evolved in parallel. There have been discrepancies, bellicosity, contempt and even separate university studies during a long time. The Saint Cosme Brotherhood, founded to supervise the professional practice of barbers (short robe surgeon-barbers) in France in 1260, was opposed by the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. The conflicting interests of the university, Brotherhood and Barbers, that persisted until the 18 th century, impaired the progress of surgery. In the first half of the 19 th century, the advance of surgery continued facing pain, hemorrhage and infection.

Selective associations in day-old chicks: when do CS traces become available for sickness-conditioned learning?

Barber and colleagues (T. A. Barber, A. M. Klunk, P. D. Howorth, M. F. Pearlman, & K. E. Patrick, 1998; T. A. Barber, M. F. Pearlman & K. E. Patrick, 1995) showed that male domestic chicks would not peck a bead presented 15 or more min before a lithium chloride (LiCl) injection, but would peck a bead presented less than 15 min before a LiCl injection. In 4 experiments, the authors (a) confirmed their initial observation, (b) showed that the effect is not due to retrograde amnesia produced by LiCl, and (c) confirmed that memories less than 15 min old are available for other types of learning.

Infections acquired in barbershops - A review.

Barbershops are important venues for men to get their hair and beards done and hence, play an important role in men's social life. But barbershops can also be a source of infections. The barber's profession brings the barber into direct contact with customers who may carry pathogens, and contaminated instruments or skin-to-skin contacts might transmit infectious agents. Since barbers work with non-sterile and reusable sharp objects, a simple nick might facilitate blood-borne infections. In our review article we summarize current knowledge regarding barbershop-acquired infections including tran

Prevalence of interdigital pilonidal sinus in hair professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study.

Interdigital Pilonidal Sinus (IPNS), also known as barber's disease, is a rare occupational disease that affects hairdressers and barbers. It develops when customers' hair penetrates the webspace between the fingers, causing a foreign body reaction. This cross-sectional study, conducted across all five governorates in Bahrain, aimed to investigate the prevalence of IPNS among hairdressers and barbers in Bahrain. A total of 479 participants (253 male and 226 female) from 384 hairdressing salons and barbershops were selected using a convenience sampling technique. Participants' age, hand dominan

A novel truncating variant within exon 7 of KAT6B associated with features of both Say-Barber-Bieseker-Young-Simpson syndrome and genitopatellar syndrome: Further evidence of a continuum in the clinical spectrum of KAT6B-related disorders.

KAT6B sequence variants have been identified in both patients with the Say-Barber-Biesecker-Young-Simpson syndrome (SBBYSS) and in the genitopatellar syndrome (GPS). In SBBYSS, they were reported to affect mostly exons 16-18 of KAT6B, and the predicted mechanism of pathogenesis was haploinsufficiency or a partial loss of protein function. Truncating variants in KAT6B leading to GPS appear to cluster within the proximal portion of exon 18, associated with a dominant-negative effect of the mutated protein, most likely. Although SBBYSS and GPS have been initially considered allelic disorders with

[Ambroise Paré (1510-90)--and features of the history of surgery].

For six centuries the barbers of Europe practiced surgery. In 1215 a papal edict forbade members of the clergy (physicians) from performing surgical procedures as contact with blood was felt to be contaminating to men of the church. Bloodletting and minor surgery was now turned over to the barber-surgeons and this was in agreement with the medical doctors who felt that these procedures were beneath their dignity. The barber-surgeons were sometimes called "doctors of the short robe" to distinguish them from the medical doctors and surgeons who were called "doctors of the long robe", although un

Behavioral dermatopathies in small mammals.

Several skin conditions seen in small mammals are thought to have a behavioral cause but their epidemiology and pathogenesis are poorly understood. A significant amount of research exists on barbering in mice that suggests it is an impulse control disorder and may represent a good animal model for trichotillomania in humans. Stress seems to play a complex role in the development and maintenance of some behavioral dermatopathies, but genetics and experiences, especially during development, also likely play a role. Pain or discomfort may underlie the development of many of these problems.

Small bowel and mesenteric injury following traditional treatment and self-inflicted trauma to inguinal hernia.

Inguinal hernia is a common indication for emergency surgery in our environment after intestinal obstruction. Occasionally other rare indications may be seen. Recently, two patients with such unusual presentation were managed in this institution. One had his hernia incised, by a traditional barber with evisceration and the other incised his hernia himself with evisceration and laceration of the small bowel. Both patients were successfully managed. The menace of traditional barbers and medical ignorance in tropical Africa are reported.

An Acromioclavicular Joint Cyst Treated by Aspiration and Several Intraarticular Injections of Hyaluronan: A Case Report.

CASE: A 79-year-old male barber with an acromioclavicular joint ganglion cyst and cuff tear arthropathy developed a large mass in his right shoulder. He refused surgery. Repeated punctures of the cyst and the injection of hyaluronic acid into the shoulder joint several times gradually reduced the cyst volume, and eventually, the cyst disappeared completely, with no recurrence for over 4 years. He has worked continuously as a barber since the initial consultation. CONCLUSION: This treatment could be promising, but further research and more patients are necessary to determine if this is a relia

Abnormal vibrissa-related behavior and loss of barrel field inhibitory neurons in 5xFAD transgenics.

A recent study reported lower anxiety in the 5xFAD transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, as measured by reduced time on the open arms of an elevated plus maze. This is important because all behaviors in experimental animals must be interpreted in light of basal anxiety and response to novel environments. We conducted a comprehensive anxiety battery in the 5xFAD transgenics and replicated the plus-maze phenotype. However, we found that it did not reflect reduced anxiety, but rather abnormal avoidance of the closed arms on the part of transgenics and within-session habituation to the cl

Ergonomic risk factors for the wrists of hairdressers.

This study utilized a portable data logger to measure the wrist angles and forearm flexor and extensor electromyography (EMG) of 21 hairstylists. The hairstylists were divided into two groups, one with 11 barbers (9 males and 2 females) specializing in men's hairdressing, and one with 10 hairdressers (2 males and 8 females) specializing in women's hairdressing. The standard haircut task was divided into three subtasks: hair cutting, washing and blow-drying. The mechanical exposures of the overall task and subtasks were quantified to compare how subtasks, occupational groups, and gender groups

Adjournment in Community HIV Prevention: Exploring Transitions in Community-Academic Partnerships.

Barbershop-based interventions have been increasingly implemented as a means to support culturally relevant and community-accessible health promotion and disease prevention efforts. Specifically, in neighborhoods of Brooklyn, New York, with high HIV seroprevalence rates, barbers have volunteered to support an initiative to help reduce sexual risk behavior. After implementing the Barbershop Talk With Brothers program for 5 years, we explored how program participation has affected barbers' HIV prevention and counseling skills to promote their clients' health, and assessed their views of next sta

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome with associated cutis laxa: possible localization to 18q.

The ablepharon-macrostomia (AMS) and Barber-Say syndromes (BSS) are rare disorders characterized by absence of the eyelids or ectropion, macrostomia, ambiguous genitalia, abnormal ears, rudimentary nipples, and dry, redundant skin. Patients with Barber-Say syndrome also have hypertrichosis. We present a patient with a phenotype similar to AMS who has a complex rearrangement of chromosome 18, involving both an inversion and interstitial deletion. Our patient lacks the typical features of the 18q deletion syndrome. We review AMS and BSS as compared with our patient, and recognize cutis laxa as a

[De-professionalization or 'para-professionalization'?. The professional development of the midwife and her place in the obstetrics of the 19th century].

The present article deals with the standing and the tasks of midwives in 19th century Württemberg. After outlining the legal framework of obstetrics, special emphasis was given to the education and activities of contemporary midwives, and to their numbers. At the beginning of the 18th century, obstetrics was almost exclusively in the hands of women. After 1800, a growing number of barber-surgeons and physicians began to practise obstetrics. At the same time, vocational training and qualification of women-obstetricians increased considerably. Schools for midwives and lying-in hospitals were fou

Frequency and determinants of Hepatitis B and C virus in general population of Farash Town, Islamabad.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Both Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections are rapidly spreading in the developing countries. Both of them are blood borne and are transmitted through un-screened blood transfusion, inadequately sterilized needles and equipment. According to WHO's criteria of endemicity, Pakistan has high disease burden of Hepatitis B and C. The present study was planned to determine the frequency and to identify the risk factors of hepatitis B and C virus in the general community of Farash town. Ablepharon and craniosynostosis in a patient with a localized TWIST1 basic domain substitution.

The TWIST family is a group of highly conserved basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors. In humans, TWIST1 haploinsufficiency causes Saethre-Chotzen syndrome, which is characterized by craniosynostosis. Heterozygous localized TWIST1 and TWIST2 basic domain substitutions exert antimorphic effects to cause Sweeney-Cox syndrome, Barber-Say syndrome, and ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome, respectively. Sweeney-Cox syndrome, Barber-Say syndrome, and ablepharon-macrostomia syndrome share the facial features of ablepharon, hypertelorism, underdevelopment of the eyelids, and cheek pads adjacent to
